The Eunice and April Comedy Show, always fun! Normally I would agree with people in the comments that many of these foods are not really “expired” and are safe to eat, but unless you’re going to eat the stuff today or this week it is sometimes better to throw it away. We have to be honest with ourselves that if we haven’t eaten it since 2017 or 2021 that we’re unlikely to eat it now. The pain/shame of throwing so much food away can help teach us not to overbuy in the future.

I remember going through a book called 30 Days to Reduce Anxiety by Harper Daniels and I think there was an exercise in there about decluttering as a mindfulness meditation. I just spent half the day slowly cleaning my place. Not rushing, just slowing cleaning one area at a time in silence. The relief at the end was amazing. I was able to throw away a lot and felt soooooo much better about myself for having a clean place.

Expiration dates are just a guideline. When I was a kid (yes, I'm old) there were no expiration dates on anything. We used our senses. Taste it, look at it, smell it. I'm still here. 😊 Some items are still good past the date, which is sometimes referred to as the "Best by date" and there is "Best when used by' date. The dates on products are a guideline. I think a lot of food in the USA gets wasted unnecessarily because they view the dates too rigidly. You can also google what foods are ok past the expiration dates, and for how long. Lots of RU-vid videos as well.

I know for me, some things may have a best before date but i know they are good for much much longer if stored properly, like tea. Sugar too if is sealed. We're lucky we have a basement pantry situation so things are stored in a cool area and can last long time. But the bugs thing freaks me the f out. Like we almost never have them here, BUT, I have seen in other homes and recently our rice which was sealed in an airtight tupperware, how did they get there? We only noticed near the end, were they there the whole time in hibernation? Not sure i really want to know.

I hate throwing food away but now I have the "broken glass" method. I think of expired food as a broken crystal glass I must clean up - the damages happen when the glass broke (or the food expired), not when I sweep up the pieces (throw away). It is strange how it helps me to acknowledge that the damage is already done, this is just the clean-up. Now I keep low inventory and NO freebies, everything very intentional - so to avoid "broken glasses". Thanks for the video, I love this series and you two are so great.

I have always had scarcity mindset and went beyond stocking up. We grew up poor and I have always purchased beyond what we would eat. I hate throwing food out but finally had to start letting it go in the trash. I love how you wrote about expiration dates being the broken crystal glass that needs to be cleaned up. Wonderful analogy and one I will use going forward. Thank you.

Many items are good even long after the Exporte date. Eben things like milk or joghurt, what you usually wouldn't expect. In Germany that's a huge thing, since tons of food are wasted every year. Don't waste food. Most don't go bad the day after the printed date 😅 It has an effect on so many different aspects. The industry that produces food, for example, including the used energy and water, the environment, even animals. So we are taught, if something still looks good then smell it, taste it and, if still good, use it quickly.
@thisuniquechica
@thisuniquechica Год назад
I think they kept some expired items, but it’s hard to justify keeping something that went bad 6 years ago.
@Cecily-Pimprenelle
@Cecily-Pimprenelle Год назад
Yes! There’s also a difference between the ”best before/best until/preferably use until” dates and the ”use by/consume before” ones. There’s a potential health risk with the latter (but there are safety margins, and the risk isn’t the same between, say, meat and yoghurt), but the Sniff Test can be used to decide whether it’s still ok to eat (maybe not by someone fragile). (”Fun” thing, here in France, for yoghurts, the same plants put a ”4-week-hence” end date for those destined to the ”european landmass” country, but for those sent to Martinique and Guadeloupe, there is a ”use by 6-weeks-hence” date. For exactly the same product!) The ’preferentially/best’ labels, on the other hand, are there only because the consistency or taste might have changed, but there’s zero health concerns to have if you eat those.
@Cecily-Pimprenelle
@Cecily-Pimprenelle Год назад
@@thisuniquechica if it went bad that long ago, well, it’s likely because it’s not something which is used at all in any case, so yes, there’s no sense in keeping it (plus, well, the ”ouch, I had to throw it away” memory might help against being tempted to buy some again).

When I traveled a lot I kept the toiletries in my travel bag so I didn't have to ask for more at the front desk if the small shampoo wasn't enough. Now I keep them with my other toiletries and use them up before I buy full size bottles at a store. I once went a month using up the small travel size toiletries so I treated myself with the money I didn't spend on toiletries that month.

Cool - the lovely Eunice is joining us 😊 I think we as a species are drawn to categorisation - kiddies games are often based on the idea of categorisation so it’s a good place to start to break a big task down. Those baskets holding all like things up in the top shelves are such a good idea - it’s really the only way to use those hard to access spaces while being able to see what you have in them. Also Eunice cannot be called a hoarder at all - because she was utterly ruthless with today’s declutter- she went through all that like a hot knife through butter - you go girl ☺

April: Our ground flaxseed says to refrigerate after opening but the chia seeds (whole, not ground) just advise to store in a cool, dry place. We've never had a problem with them going rancid but refrigerating them is probably best in homes without air conditioning.

I think that 2022, if non refrigerated items, would be ok. Usually, expiration dates are based on retail and not on the science. Four years is usually the time to consider expiration based (mostly) on staleness. Spices last six or seven years, again, based on staleness. Packages of high preservative flavorings for ramen would probably last 20 years.

I hope you don't mind but as a mother I always tell my children. You need maintenance habits. 1. After using something, put it away immediately. 2. Clean surfaces everyday. 3. Get rid of extra staff regularly. If you don't follow these rules, things get piled up until you can't stand it any longer. You are Young and clever you can start new habits if you want a change. Good luck. You can't have more things that you can contain. Be smart. The less you have the less you have to care about.

I used to take the toiletries but then i had too many, decluttered and realized i wasted them, so I stopped. But i do take them when i travel. Recently ran out of shampoo thought of those little toiletries, found one 😆. So now i need them again. Realized what i should declutter, im not decluttering. I seem to be decluttering the easiest areas, thus no toiletries and avoiding the craft room again. Feel like i just talked in circles 😆 I do take tea bags that i think my husband would like and he does drink them. Recently won a sticker at a sustainable store, realized i wouldnt use the sticker. So i told the person, im not going to take it with me. Saving the world one sticker at a time 😆

Love a good pantry declutter. Maybe clear bins would help keep similar items together to prevent overbuying/waste. Just a thought.
