Ideal for those who have been decluttering for a long time with little success and those looking for more community and support.
In the Declutter Your Home in 15 Minutes a Day course we go through the workbook, breaking down specific areas of your home in detail to be able to declutter faster and with more confidence. If you want to know specifics (like how many of each thing to keep) this course is for you.

I think it's important to note that minimalism only works when you don't go out and buy all new items of the same stuff you got rid off. Sometimes having all this new found space gives people the green light to shop for more stuff. A complete mind shift needs to take place...the idea that you don't really "need" all of this stuff, this stuff does not make you happy and it certainly doesn't validate your worth.
@Melshed
@Melshed Год назад
So true. I’ve followed several self-proclaimed minimalists over years and it blows my mind that they’ll often do “my favorite amazon finds” or similar videos…. Kinda feels like they actually prefer to shop and toss, like it’s all disposable. They buy impulsively then get rid of it when they don’t want to put it away. Instead of being happy with what they already have, or wanting less. Seems really backwards to me. I’m feeling pretty jaded about it now, but at least Dawn has such a sweet personality lol 😂
@kmac2482
@kmac2482 Год назад
@@Melshed Yes I agree! Its important to remember that getting rid of stuff an give you the dopamine hit you crave too so we have to be careful that we don't get "addicted" to getting rid of stuff....and then buying new stuff to declutter. I do find some minimalist channels are veering in this direction which is frustrating. Whether its just so they have content or whether a mind sift hasn't been made I don't know, but sometimes I think companies must love the minimalist movement becuase it gets people into a cycle of more shopping!

Idk guys. It’s okay to buy things. It’s okay to make mistakes. Also, I think most of us already here are here bc we’re not natural wasters. And we need a little permission to dispose. Also, I’ve gotten myself to get rid of a lot of stuff by consoling myself with something new. Like I’ve gotten rid of a lot of heels that are well worn bc I convinced myself that I deserve this one new, quality pair. My old shoes were fine but I had too many but couldn’t get rid of them bc they were “still good”. Now I have wayyy less and I’m happier AND I got myself a new treat. But I don’t think promoting quality products is wrong. And I don’t think the lesson is to be wasteful. Just to be patient and kind with ourselves.

If I find I open up a space that keeps getting refilled with clutter, I like to put something in that new space that is peaceful to look at-- like an empty basket/bin, or that sentimental item that was in my basement that I wanted to bring out and display and enjoy! My husband surprised me about a week ago. He does the cooking and I do clean up so we make joint decisions on what we have in our kitchen. I came into the kitchen and there on the counter was a pile of utensils he said we could donate to the thrift store. He did this on his own! No prompting from me. We keep an empty moving box around to throw in things to donate. A funny thing... We dropped off a load at good will earlier today and when we pulled up I spotted a moving box with my handwriting on it. So how sad is it that we had so much stuff?? I just can't believe it.

I didn't realise how organised my kitchen actually was until I got a housemate. Cupboards are now at crisis point, nothing gets put away in the same place twice, and several times she has re-organised things that were already organised. The only saving grace is that I insist the benches are kept clear, although it is generally me that washes the dishes and cleans up the food debris. I totally relate to the mental health aspects of a messy kitchen as I am finding the situation very stressful!

Thank you Dawn. You perfectly expressed my own feelings when you talked about the season of life. I closed a retail store and rented a storage unit for 3 years to mostly store stuff I didn’t want or need. This year I cleaned it out by tossing tons of it in the dumpster and bringing the rest home and selling it to friends for “free” with a donation to animal rescue. So far I have raised $2000 for the rescue from stuff I don’t need or want. Yay! The feeling of decluttering is the best ever. I love the Time Will Tell bin and will incorporate that idea into my organizing routine. Thx again for all your videos and help.

I like the idea of decluttering when the kitchen is a mess. You can see what gets used and what doesnt. I should declutter my clothes on laundry day to see what clothes are left behind and not getting worn. I see it with my kids' clothes. I am washing and folding the same 5 shirts and what's in the drawer is always in the drawer.

Try the backwards hanger method for your closet. Works like a charm! With clothes in a dresser, I used the “time will tell” method by putting everything in boxes (a separate box each for shirts, pants, shots, pj’s, etc.) As I wore and washed each item, they were returned to the dresser drawers. Within one month, I knew what I wore and what I didn’t. My time will tell boxes went from 6 to 1. I did this method for both my warm/hot weather clothes and again for my chilly/cold weather clothes. Got rid of 50-60% of my clothes per season!

In my home, dishes piled up by the sink is not a sign that we have too many, we have one place setting for each family member. For me it is a sign that I'm having a chronic illness flare up and need to show myself some grace because I can't keep up. I still beat myself up because I have almost no tolerance for clutter, but then I give myself permission to use paper dishes and plastic silverware until I've recovered enough to catch up on the dishes. And my husband also helps keep up with the dishes too, he just tends to miss some of the awkward things like cookie sheets. Also, the tip to give yourself permission to throw things out is huge. I'm very thrifty and I tend to hang on to glass jars, bottles and even food packages thinking I will wash it out and reuse it. Sometimes I am able to do that. But more often than not I get bogged down and then my kitchen is piled up with all these jars, bottles and old bread bags waiting for my attention. So, every once and a while I just go through and toss all of my thrifty projects that are hanging over my head.

I once read on another channel for someone with the same kind of thing (chronic condition with an eagerness to have a tidy sink) that she kept a dish tub under her sink to rinse and put dirty dishes until she had the energy to get to them. It’s not a huge solution but she said it helped to ease her mind from seeing the “clutter”. Maybe this could work for you too if you’re wanting it out of sight until you’re ready to tackle it?

I have a chronic illness too and this is the same for me! I want to be very eco but I think I might try the paper plates thing because my family suffer when I’m not well. Seeing the clutter and mess makes me feel stressed and guilty that I am unable to care for my home and family as I would like, that doesn’t help me get better. So maybe being a little less eco is balanced out on occasion. I love Dawn’s realistic and nonjudgmental approach ❤️

I work daily at my place and hers - not only give ourselves grace and paper plates but give up on fantasy self that reuses all the glass etc. We do not have the capacity. That is how hoarding happens & it gets out of control commonly with ppl so bogged down with illness.

(Married for 6 months) All of the greenery I bought for the wedding was taking up space in a closet. A few months ago I wouldn’t have gotten rid of ANY of it. I was holding onto it because it was used in our wedding. It held a special place in my heart. It served it’s purpose. I donated half of it to a friend that’s getting married soon. Thank you so much for motivating me to declutter my kitchen as well as my whole house. This process has taken me months because we've lived in this house for over 20 years. I can't tell you how free I feel now that we're down to the basics. My brother and sister-in law were in shock when they came over the other day and saw what we've done. My husband's sister said she wished her house looked this clean. What a complement!!! The funny part is I keep finding other things to get rid of. I can see this is only the beginning of our new lifestyle and I love it. It's awesome having a place for everything and cupboards half empty. Life is good now thanks to your inspiration. Keep up the good work.

Sounds like you made the mind shift I’ve been waiting for! So lucky you. I keep decluttering but still find it hard to let go of certain things. My main hurdle is thinking I may use it again. For example my large coffee pot thing, you know the ones they have at a church coffee get together. I bought it for a party over 10 years ago and have used it once since then. I know I’ll kick myself if an opportunity comes up after I’ve given it away and I’ll be wishing I still had it - you know? Ugh 😑

Hey Dawn, you helped me to start with decluttering my whole house. This video about "kitchen-stuff" reminds me, when you gave me all the motivation for the first step. It toke me mostly one complete week, to go through each tiny space, tackling each bit and piece, scrubb and clean and do some makeover and touch up for my kitchen. Since I did that, it´s possible for me to upkeep my kitchen. Sometimes when life is overwhelming me and I can not stay on basic routines, I need to this 2 steps: Loading the dishwasher and then looking at all stuff which starts piling up and doing a quick and easy declutter+tidy routine. And yes, the first time was "horrorble" - NOWADAYS it´s done in 10-20 minutes. In some rooms, I need to peel my "Onion" again and again, till everything will be suiting my actual season. Some rooms or topics were easier to declutter than others for me. In the mainareas I´m fine and found "myself". Hobby + Nostalgia are bit more intensive and I need multiple times, to go through this stuff. With being that happy to feel each and every day, how massiv the influence on my mind is, to have the kitchen "set-up" in an simple and easy way, that it´s JOY to sit there after a quick 5 minutes cleaning and it could not be nicer ...... Only want say to people which just start watching this channel. Please give it a shot and use Dawns methods for ONE ROOM in your house. When there is a lot and you have hard times, do it in small steps, but don't stop working on it. After you got this one room done, your mind learned so much and you got yourself so much "happy-hormones", that you can activate the memory of this situation, to gain the strength going further to the next room. It´s absolute worth it. Greets from Germany

Great thought also on the …see whats on your counters as helpful to give hints as to what you need to declutter…once a while back I asked myself just that question and multiple wooden spoons was a tell tale, i decided to keep my Best 5…Wow it has been Amazing the difference one item made. Now one thing more I am excited about that goes along with this is larger stuff, ( large bowls and cutting boards ) I have decided to get one Entertainment Box that we can pull out on Holidays and Special Parties and stop the extra multiple bowls or cutting boards on counter, when we only need them during these times. Thanks Again for the Timely Inspiration 🤩

I started watching your videos a few years ago, and since I made a move to a tiny house almost two years ago, I've been very picky on what I let into my house. When you started talking about how many pots and pans to keep, I literally counted up my pots and pans to 5! I was so excited lol. My kitchen is so much easier to clean thanks to your channel! I've simplified everything in my house, and life is so much better! I used to have three different sets of dishes in my last kitchen, because I have a lot of family that would come over often, but I hated how messy it made my kitchen and how long it took to clean up. Now, I just use paper and plastic when I have people over, and literally no one cares! Actually everyone can relax more because they're not worried that the kids are going to mess up my dishes! Again, thank you!

Last time I had a huge pile so I made a sign that said "free stuff, please don't make a mess." I took a pic and posted it in my local FB buy nothing group. Nearly everything was gone within an hour or two!! There's a lot of artists here too that repurpose items.. broken pottery, wood scraps, magazines, damaged books, toys, makeup.. you name it. So I just put everything I had out there (other than actual garbage of course). It was so much easier than taking to a thrift store, and it makes me feel better knowing someone can use those things instead of going to a landfill. In fact, it motivated me to declutter even more because I knew things would go to good use!

Thanks for reminding people of this option. I live on a country road yet I've put piles of stuff at the end of my driveway about 10 times now. This year, I’ve decluttered the majority of my house. My big take away: at first you’re gonna suck at it. You’re going to second guess yourself, get stuck, and have to come back to different areas. THATS OK. Putting in the reps helps to build confidence, and eventually all of the layers of that onion will come off. The 3 categories thing may be rough for someone just starting because you haven’t developed those skills yet (any kind of keep box becomes another pile later), BUT… this is a great strategy once you’ve been at it awhile and are working on those next layers. Dawn, great video. Nicely explained.

Thank you. I was listening to this while I made breakfast. I am just cleaning up, and I just made an instant decluttering decision, based on your training. I found you on “The Minimal Mom”, and recommend “Take Your House Back” membership to anybody who watches your videos. Well worth the investment. New Jersey has eliminated single use plastic bags, except in certain circumstances. I always had 2 Kleenex boxes stuffed with two different kinds of bags, vegetable bags which are still allowed, and grocery store bags that are no longer allowed, on the counter. I realized they were each half empty. This never happened before the ban. I use plastic bags when I’m peeling vegetables, cleaning up after dinner, and other uses. Aunt Millie taught me it keeps the garbage can from smelling. But now there are less of them, because of the ban. Instantaneously, I combined them (Dana, thank you for the container concept), broke down the Kleenex box, and recycled it. Done. Thank you for helping me learn how to declutter, so that decisions like this during my regular daily rounds are second nature. I have more to do, and I’m grateful in September I will be able to renew (Take back your house) for a modest fee. But you have changed my life forever. I just came back from 28 days overseas. The Car Service helped me with my luggage. And I looked around, and I liked what I saw. Is there still a dining room table and living room table that needs to be really gone through, and seriously decluttered, and homes found for papers?? Yes! But I set up the weekly Sunday basket before I left, and I’m committed to doing that. My kitchen is in relatively good order. One of the spaces I have tackled repetitively. The decisions just get easier. I can get my hands in the drawers, and it makes cooking and clean up so much simpler. Color me grateful.

However, last night I sat down and DREW pictures of each of my kitchen cabinets and how I WANT them to be organized. I feel so confident to take action now with my vision and plan already set in place. I will most likely tweak things as I get my hands on things, but I have more confidence in chucking things out that weren't in my vision, what I pondered and thought over. All but one cookie sheet - that I may use fir crafts done. All my stash of tea in case I have company who wants different tea. I drink Chai. I may have people over sometimes, but they do t drink tea. You today, let me throw out entire unopened boxes of tea. And how old is it anyway? I am letting myself throw away today. I have matching side chairs. I only want one. But I feel since they match I have to keep both or get rid of both. I'm donating ONE! They will not miss each other and the customer at habitat will never know there were two. I also have long covid. I need a simple house to clean. Bless you. I'm on it. Bag, donate and a small time will tell box. If time will tell is full, something moves to donate. If it's worth less than $15 to habitat, black bag. Today you created a very happy monster. I am one person but letting myself keep 4 mugs. Im being very kind to myself. And it's going in the car. And first thing tomorrow, donate so I can't change my mind. Done. Thank you! Wooden spoons? From 20 to 4. Again being kind. 4 different ones. The holders on the counter match my dishes. So they go. Done. I love you. My cat loves you. My back will soon love you. ❤. We never know who will say it in a way we/us will get it. You did it for me! Smile!

He works nights, I never know when I will be able to sleep, so we need to fix meals for our separate schedule. At 70 with arthritis, I can't reach tall cabinets, or bend knees sometimes. I do find your videos motivating and help me think through how best to organize things. My son & I had to move in together 2.5 years ago. Still working things out.

Hi Dawn, I just wanted to thank you for your video and tell you how timely your video was. Recycling in my city is limited (only certain types of things, only 2 plastic codes accepted, etc.), so I have multiple recycling methods, including multiple sorting areas, taking things to multiple locations, etc. I started cleaning out my fridge this evening, and I just finally gave myself a pass to just throw stuff out, and not clean each container out, figure out which recycling method it could potentially go in, determine if I could make a meal from it tomorrow because I could maybe get another day out of that "almost" bad lettuce, etc. I finished doing the overdue fridge clean out and it felt great. Nothing was "growing" but i had several things I couldn't bring myself to just throw out, even though I wasn't using it. However, I was feeling bad about the "waste" and not doing all I could to recycle, stretch food, etc. I treated myself for accomplishing the chore by watching your video and was amazed and so blessed when you talked about giving yourself a pass day, where you prioritize your mental health and your ability to get done vs. not being wasteful, etc. I really needed that! While we don't want to be wasteful, I think sometimes giving yourself a bit of grace so that the job gets done is something that isn't really talked about enough when others promote decluttering. Its not about advocating for wastefulness, but just acknowledging that there can be an occasional day where one's ability to meet the end goal has to override the 5 minutes I spend trying to decipher the very faint plastic code (I'm looking at you ALDI!) barely imprinted under a label in the bottom of a container. So, THANK YOU for reminding me that one day of giving myself a bit of grace and throwing out a few things is not ruining the planet. But it may be saving my sanity. Love your videos and thank you for sharing your life with us! Amy

I sometimes take decluttered items to use at work, like office supplies, kitchen items for our kitchenette, etc. This weekend I cleaned out the junk drawer and took an extra tape measure and a packing tape dispenser to work.

I have the same hangup too about washing something before donating it and then I forget and yes it never gets donated . Thank you for pointing that out and giving me permission to just donate or throw away dirty stuff.

Dawn, Your video’s are so inspiring! I decluttered my kitchen several months back (nearly a year or so ago?) after watching one of your declutter tutorials and it has changed my life. I found what you said to be true about not missing the things I never used and loving the fact that I have room for everything I do use. It is easy to clean up my kitchen and I removed things from my counter top because I now have room to put the toaster and blender away in the cupboard. I forgot how beautiful our backsplash is that we never saw because appliances were there blocking the view. I do have more peace. To be honest, I do have two or three drawers that I have to keep an eye on, or unwanted things find their way in, but I know without a doubt how to get rid of things and not feel guilt throwing, donating or putting them in the undecided bin. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!

Your video today spurred me into letting go of a rarely used skillet, the large glass measuring cup I never use but kept saving for 'Justin Case', some food storage containers, and more! Thank you! I've decluttered my home thoroughly every 4 months for the past 3 years. Layer by layer.

I love your comments on having a free pass day! I’ve told my husband that I do feel in some ways that some decluttering projects would happen much quicker and with less emotional strain if I could simply toss it in the trash. I know it may sound bad, but it just makes it that much easier!

I moved from a 3 bedroom, 3 car garage to a one bedroom apartment. That is when I found you! I now live in an RV and am happy in my space. I helped a friend declutter her 1 bedroom apt and she kept asking.. do you want this? LOL I explained no, if I bring it in it would add to my inventory to take care of. After several bags of trash and donation boxes she loves the new look. Still too cluttered for me, but it’s a good start. One of her problems is that both her kids have things at her apartment that they should take home with them. And while I was there she told her son you need to take this home, and he said oh I don’t have any room for it. Yet, he lives in a 3 bedroom house with an attic for storage. I was so proud of her because I went back a couple of weeks later to visit and she had continued decluttering!

I’m new to ur channel and loving it! God brought me to ur channel at a perfect time in my life. We raised 7 kids and often had 3 nieces and a nephew too. Now all have grown & moved out n the past 1&1/2 yrs and I’m desperately trying to downsize and live a more minimalist life. I’ve been in this attempt 2 yrs!!!!!!! Now I’m down to the hardest things to part with and your videos are like GOLD! We homeschooled & was the go to house for everyone’s friends. Our kids took stuff as they moved out, I sold and donated tons, tossed much as well, but still entirely too much still. The next haul seems to have me stuck…..I can see ur shared methods will help tremendously on this last leg if my efforts. God richly bless you and thanks so much for sharing.

I went through my food storage containers while watching your video. I finally decided to try storing them with the lids on! (Dana would be so proud!) I've always said I don't have the room but I ended up moving seldom used items out of prime real-estate and moved a few more things and then had the perfect cabinet for the food containers. I really think this might work. Thanks for the push!

Thanks to you yes, I have started to decluter but, I have chronic pain and try using the dishwasher everyother night. There are times when I just need the extra pots, pans, and others because I am bed ridden in pain. I am going about decluter slowly but, steady. Never will I consider becoming a minimist, but can have less than before.

I really love the verbiage around the season you are in! Life changes, our children grow, we don’t need/ use the same things we did 15 years ago. I’ve changed many things in my kitchen/ laundry over the last year and it works so much better for us now. Thank you and love watching your videos!

I really appreciate how your videos address living with a family and not just getting rid of everything, but keeping just what you need and is right for your family and getting there more quickly! I've been decluttering over that last month before homeschool is in full swing and it's got to be done fast! I've gotten so many great tips from you that have really helped, thank you! Previously I felt minimalism was portrayed as a rejection of all man made items except a pair of clothes, a bed and a teacup. Clearly you can't live like that with kids. You really focus on the meaning of chosing what you want to experience in your life and I think that applies to us all no matter how much stuff we decide to own at any given time. Thanks again for such practical help and support and for validation that it really is okay to part with things that don't meet your needs.

The 'throwing things away is ok' is where I'm getting completely stuck. I have such a problem with guilt for throwing things away considering the state of the environment. (However, I realise I therefore need to address this earlier in the process.... Don't buy the stuff in the first place!!) Anyone else struggle with this?

Yes, and I end up becoming a "plastic or other type of trash hoarder". I have really good recycling in my area so it is easy to recycle plastic, batteries, electronics etc. A donation center is right across the street from my market and they collect ripped and stained clothing for textile recycling. I have also found an arts organization that works with kids and accepts the stuff that I think could be repurposed into something cool. Even though it is relatively easy to recycle things, I am so sick of decluttering that I always ask myself if whatever I buy is something I really need or will it end up creating more work for me when I donate it. On the flip side, I have found a few "deals" while donating items and that made it easier for me to donate a skirt I will never fit into. It felt more like I was contributing to a clothing swap than feeling bad for wasting money on something I never wore. Since Dawn and her family "thrift", I was thinking she really wasn't losing money from donating the appliance because she saves money when buying other people's donations.

Dana K White suggest having a box for donations in a permanent spot. When you declutter you just put stuff in the box and take it to a thrift shop or animal shelter. Repeat.

Last year I joined your Take Your House Back group. I severally decluttered my kitchen. Not as hard as you did, in that I live alone. I do take care of my grandsons though, so I saved enough dishes for them and the occasional times I might have the whole family for dinner. I didn’t save 5 full sized plates though. I saved only 3 (for the adults). I mainly cook with my cast iron frying pan and my instant pot. I’m a butterfly (Cass!). I wish I could figure out how to flit around like a butterfly with a bit more organization. When it all falls apart, I look at my kitchen and SEE all that I’ve gotten out. Truly looks like a butterfly’s kitchen! I need to check out the DIY Mommy’s channel to see how she handles her kitchen!
