My parents were pack rats and didn't ever let me put things on the wall or even paint because of "resale value." They also didn't let me shed anything I'd outgrown, so I didn't have enough storage for what I was required to keep in my room. 😅 Still recovering. But I also have a DEEP abiding hatred for both unintentional clutter and unadorned flat white walls. Puts me weirdly within and at odds with both Minimalism and Maximalism. It also makes me *exactly* opposite of the pop-of-color school of boho. But, hey - I guess that's what forces unique design decisions.
I grew up in a lovely home that was clean, neat, and so fraught with anxiety I couldn't move sometimes. When I left home it was several years of going crazy with the messiness before I got to my own style and comfort level. It's better to let kids find their own way in their rooms, at least to a certain extent. Then we know how to care for a place when we grow up.
Finally, actual Boho! I grew up in the 70’s and you described boho like I remember. The neutral kind of Scandinavian boho is nice, but I need more color!! Thanks, great video!
Yes, real Boho! Just the video I needed! I LOVE Boho and have some great pieces. But I also have Skandi pieces and I love birch wood. Now I have clearer ideas for melding them, and using different appropriate color combos in my bedroom and great room (living room and kitchen).
I can’t tell you how much this video helped me to bring together a bunch of different ideas that were in my mind... For years, I tried and failed to give my bedroom a “vacation/escape” feeling. Fast forward, my husband is a 2 time cancer survivor before age 40 and I have a small child. My bedroom theme turned into given-up mom. Then, my father passed away and I am going through his items. In this emotional mess, I watched this video, not sure if it would fit me since I haven’t really been able to travel due to my life taking me on so many other pathways. However, something clicked. My dad was a talented painter and a collector. His collection of old albums, the souvenirs he brought back when he traveled for work, all my sentimental pieces, my rattan hatbox from when I went to Florida, mismatched wood tones could work in boho. I even have an old rug in the basement. My cheap black dresser is getting a DIY makeover and my husband is cutting our old vinyl tufted headboard off and making us a new one out of wood. I am sharing this with you because I am a new subscriber and wanted to say thank you and I wanted to let everyone know the big thing that clicked with me while watching this video is that boho isn’t only for the wanderlust travelers, it is for anyone who wants to tell the story of their life’s journey through objects in their design.
I love how you mention DIY, and don't downplay it as taking the "cheap" route out. Not everyone can afford new decor pieces, but we can still create beautiful spaces and homes for ourselves. Thank you- New subscriber here!
I am an old hippie & have always loved the eclectic boho style of decorating. That said, I have to admit that now that I’ve just turned 70, boho is a lot of work! Lots of dusting all the wonderful things I’ve collected over a lifetime of traveling, lots of ‘things’ to move around. But alas, it’s the time in my life to purge! Sad but true. I’ve got no boho sisters or brothers to pass my treasures onto, no kids, no friends of like decorating style! Poor me.☹️😊 I still love the style, though. And…boho is not for dog lovers! Too much fur to constantly clean off all the beautiful eclectic stuff!😩
Wish we knew each other. I'm very similar, my days in the late 60s & 70s was so much fun that I mostly remember. I have a lively sense of the weird and thankfully my son & daughter do as well. They've so far always said "Mom we love your stuff and we'll be happy to have it later!" Hope my DIL can handle it! 😄✌🏽💗
You both sound lovely! I am just 18 and an artist at heart, but one day I wish to have a boho style decorated home that fits my artistic nature. I want colourful accent walls, with my plants and artworks everywhere. Hopefully this can come true one day :)
Perfect... I must be Boho and a bit minimalist. At 72 years and furnishings an Apartment . This is the permission I needed. Accentuate my wild travels. 😎😉
My daughter has the most amazing modern boho home. She edits everything she puts in. I really wish you could see it. The living room is magazine worthy but still cozy and comfy.
I love boho!! Everything in my living room has a story, it's colorful and rich and lived in and can be fun and sexy. Also it doesn't need to be 100% pristine and organized, you can enjoy your space and not clean constantly, very forgiving
Boy its my house Boho. Been to Morocco, been to India, Japan - a lot of travel. SO, that's my house. I look around and see and feel my travels. Color, texture, stories - let your home be YOU. Oh and do go to Morocco as it's amazing........
How come I call my style Boho (traveled the world for 25 years and bought great pieces) and my kids and grandkids call my house “grandma” style? Seriously have every one of your tips checked off and many of my rooms could have been used as your examples! Sending your video to the kids! 😆
Sometimes we need a decorator to come in and freshen up or update our look a bit. I'm 50 and my daughter thinks my style is dated. I'm bringing in a decorator to help me just a little.
We are gutting a smoke-filled 1985 mobile home as a temporary residence and I have been searching for a fun, livable, comfy, resellable style. Boho, off course! I've had designer friends tell me I am Boho, but I never had the chips to fully embrace it. Thank you, thank you! (My SpaceX- loving engineer hubby will love using a mural of the Carina nebula for the kitchen backsplash. I'm going to do it!)
Finally, authentic Bohemian! I’m redecorating my room and looking at RU-vid for inspiration, and every girl is like, “EXTREME BoHo MakEoVEr!” And all they did was go to Ikea, and hung some plants and fairy lights. Also, no color, just white walls and pastels. And then they’re like, “My style is BoHo.” Ugh, grinds my gears.
Totally get it. I've been gathering second hand furniture nearly a year to get to the final product. My wall are white, green and copper gas pipes hahaha.
You are such an invaluable and knowledgeable design/decor resource and your presentation style is so warm and welcoming. No high horse nose in the air snooty "I am a lofty designer" vibe. Really appreciate your videos.
The hippies used to say "Express Yourself". That is why the teens like hippie stuff. It isn't boring or like everyone else has. You use what you like and decorate with a sense of self expression. Used items means your copy-cat friend cannot run out and buy identical items. This makes you unique.
LOL My version of BOHO from the eyes of a 71 year old forever hippie. I have always done my version of boho. Some because when I was first on my own I just had to use whatever I could to make it work. SO over 50+ years and countless moves and life changes my boho has evolved to what it is now. I just feel at home in my space. Many are shocked because I am old and supposed to be grown up. Hahahaha Never going to happen. And after watching the last, to me video of yours, I cracked up because I did make the mistake of buying that marshmellow loveseat. OMG what a mistake. Well last year I took it aart. Removed much of the arm stuffing did some reworking on the frame and stapled it back together. Gained at least 8 more inches space in my room. I had a blast.
BOHO comes from the word Bohemian which was a life style choice of the artists, writers, creatives that travelled and thought freely and against the system.
I love Boho design. It always looks so happy and inviting. I imagine the person living there truly feels like a part of the space and is comfortable there. I'm working on a Boho style in my living and dining room space. My husband isn't so into it, but I'm bringing him around lol! I had plants but my cats declared war on them.
I have finally defined my style - it's BoHo! Art pieces painted by dad and brother. Beautiful sofas bought 25 years ago with an african print, furniture from mum-in-law. Wicker 50's chairs and cabinets bought at an auction and lovingly restored by yours-truly. Plants-plants-plants! Books-books-books. Special vases and coloured glass pieces. Colour palettes - Apricot and navy blue; dark red and green; lots of wood - old and new. Soothing Duck-egg in the bedroom. Yay! My husband says he loves our home. Everything we have means something and has been loved.
I am Boho - like textbook, poster child boho. I never knew. I'm 62 and all these years I thought I was just "quirky" ... really, seriously quirky. 🤪 I feel oddly vindicated.
My style has evolved this way over my whole life (entire family are artists!) and boy was I happy to discover black macrame. It's very cool! Just be wary of wicker and rattan if you have cats, they love to scratch it!
Nick, I’ve binge watched your videos over the last couple of weeks and I think I’ve learned the most about my interior style through your videos! I’m moving into my first flat by myself after house sharing for years and so excited to get started on my mid-century/scandi vision. You’ve also helped me figure out where to really invest in high/low items. Thank you so much!!!
You have found my heart; on target. 🌻💞✌🏼 We've traveled the world as I was growing up. Since then I've continued to do so, gathering my memories as I go. Finally I'm getting to put it all together into my dream space. Thanks for an impressive post. 🌞😍🎶🌎✌🏼
My parents were boho before it was a thing. Lol I used to love going to their hippie friends homes in the 90’s and loved seeing all the eclectic art and decor.
I want to thank you for those very informative videos. My sister is totally boho, while my wife and I are are into Japandi style. And you know what? your channel helped all of us! Next step: show it to our parents. They have no style at all, but they would love to have more cohesive house deco. so I'll show your videos to them so they can figure out what they like as deco style. Keep the good work!
I grew up in the 60s and 70s, so I have always decorated this way. I also love the coastal look and I mix the two together. Seems to all come together somehow! Now I know what to call it! Thanks so much.
With this video, you remind me about my art teacher. She had small flat full of wardrobes and shelves of different colours. Walls were all in paintings by her and her son ( and he had totally different style). All over you could see pots, bowls, vases and bottles. And i still remember that gorgeous desk, that looked like antique
Fun, colorful, funky. Yes! Especially after the sterility and boredom of the past two years. I've been to more than 60 cities in 26 countries and I have lots of mementos and wall art. Plus I love that I can mix in mid-century, Western, and other styles I love.
I was in college, in NYC, from ‘73-‘77. We lived boho in the dorm rooms, with lots of macrame, DIY of course, those enormous colorful Indian bedspreads that “created” perfect “walls” between your section of the room and your roommate’s, and an overload of plants, especially pot. My first roommate painted a border near the ceiling of pot plants (talk about getting high…).
You have got me hooked on to your channel... and it’s irritating that I have to wait for a whole week before your next video.. btw.. great videos.. great content.. very crisp, up to the point.. (and to your partner I would like to say, I love when Nick talks, its actually is very precise and no- he doesn’t talk too much at all.. we all eagerly wait for his videos)
Eagerly waiting for your videos.. I know it takes a long time to edit.. but I am sure you will start getting out two videos in a week very very soon.. may be you could do one normal length video and one 2 minutes video(not sure if it’s doable, but yes I am a little selfish since I will be able to see your video twice a week 😇). And a big hello 👋🏻 to your partner from me 😊.
Just finding your videos - they are so helpful. I'd point out that the Raj period had it's own Boho moment. Brits were living in India, South Africa, the Bahamas - all over the Empire, and bringing home furnishings, textiles, etc and decorating very English homes with eclectic mixes of interiors.
I’ve been painting a lot this year and I’ve gotten so much better so my art is the main source of color in my space. I also crochet blankets and pillows and make candles sometimes so everything is slowly and organically coming together. I just discovered how fun area rugs are so that’s where I’m at now. Love traditional eclectic boho ❤️🪴💚
I love this style because I don't have to buy a whole set of furniture to match it. I can pick my favourite couch, and my favourite armchair, and thrift some beautiful wooden furniture in different woods. I love giving furniture a second life.
I grew up in the 60's/70's. Was totally hippied out by 4th grade. Tried to decorate my new home in Maine in a Wabi Sabi minimalist style but the hippie in me prevailed and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't escape my Boho proclivities. I am the Anthropologie Queen! Love you Nick!
I am totally Boho, my husband was totally New England Coastal when we met. So now we are New England Boho... Windsor back dining chairs with the little red one my mom painted from the flea market in the corner. PB leather sofa and a papasan with a red cushion and sheepskin. We are told all the time how warm and comfortable our space feels and that is the best compliment I can think of from a guest!
I was recently describing the space I wanted to create to my mother in law. And without realizing what I was describing I used the same type of words you did. I wanted a boho 70’s lounge rain forest look and that’s pretty much what I’ve got going so far.
I love that this gets to some of the spirit and values behind the intention of boho. Speaks to me! That comes from me authentically, not me wanting to be trendy. I do get that it can get too cliche of done in a certain way.
I grew up in a Boho Home, my parents were genuine nomads. It collected so much dust, but I took the love of an indoor jungle with me. My husband is a minimalist and now we have a skandi/japandi style with tons of wicker and plants, but very little decor.
The key i’ve found for this style is to really hone in one what YOU like. And then REALLY focus on that...in a style where you can do anything, you still need focus and pieces that relate somehow for a finished cohesive look.
What a fun change! I really like seeing ingenious ideas like at 4:07 in which someone created a fake beam look which is fairly easy and solved the no-wiring problem for pendant lamps by hiding the wires in the "beams". Etsy and Amazon make accessories easy for those who can't afford extensive travel. You can also make fun things with 2 bamboo salad bowls screwed together or baskets. I remember doing these inexpensive creative things in my college days and the results really amazed people (in a good way.) However, I learned to pump the brakes on collectibles by asking myself, "Do you want to dust this every few weeks?"
Wow, I just realized my living quarters is BOHO. Lots of art, my art that I create and interesting things I’ve collected. My place is fun says everybody who visits. Thanks Nick 😊
My apartment is totally boho…it’s the style that best fits me. I love the colors and textures and prints and eclectic look. I love quirky, kitschy stuff. It’s such a cozy space.
I just love classic boho. It is not an easy style to creare since it may look cheep ...it tells a lot of owners of boho home. Its personal , authentic and has some history in it. An authentic boho is created for years and thats greate in it. Thank you for your vidios 👏🤝
I am very drawn into boho mid century modern interior design but less clutter. I love mixing old (our Vestervig Erickson 1960 dinning chair) & new ( Rh oak dinning table). Mixing different culture like Moroccan Rug, Herman Miller Emma’s Chair, Nepali Thanka Paintings etc. And yes lots of plants. I think It helps to create & bring in your style, heritage & somewhat identity. Even though I love mid century, Scandinavian & Japandi style but I think I will always incorporate boho design to bring some of those element of own style. Loving your content & its helping me create some mood board for the house we will be building.
I love both Boho and Scandinavian decor. I wonder if I can combine them both without looking ridiculous? If that’s possible, I’d love to see a video that shows how you can combine two types of decorating styles without looking like a hot mess! BTW I LOVE ❤️ your channel!
this video had a lot of great insight! I think boho style is more than travel and I am glad that was touched on. travels can be roadtrips or estate sales - you don't need to go to morocco or spend a bunch of money to design boho
Nick, I love your style videos. Even though I am not usually drawn to the boho style, I love knowing about it and seeing the great examples you show. Your breakdown of each style is spot on in my estimation. I have been a student of interior design my whole life and I sure wish I could have had you as a teacher! Thanks so much for all the work you put into your videos.
YEY Thank you. Tis is my style, of course my family calls it cluttered and too many schatzkes (sp) and I thrive in this space very cozy and comfortable. Yes, they call it cluttered but the absolutely love coming to my house wonder why!!!! lol
I moved to a real farmhouse 23 years ago...I have always decorated eclectic in that I am not matchy matchy...love to display things that mean something to me....people have always told me they feel so comfortable in my home (biggest compliment I could ask for!) We have horses so of course we love equestrian decor and Southwest kinda lends itself to adding the boho vibe. I like natural materials, comfort, colorful, vintage, found, etc I think I’m definitely farmhouse boho and I love it. I think depending on the person and their lifestyle....Boho and farmhouse go very well together.....thank you for sharing😊k
I’m so glad I came across this video! 💜💜💜 I’m a Furniture painter And I struggle with Explaining BoHo to clients. I am definitely going to refer people to this video! You explain it so well! 😊
I live in Antigua, Guatemala and started collecting huipiles....the old ones and large ceremonial ones 20 years ago. A friend of mine here who IS a Guatemalan had dining room chairs made and ended up not caring for the carving on the bacms so she used huipiles just slipped.over the chair backs which is colorful, artistic looking and isnt as much of a commitment as cutting them up to use as upholstery fabric, which I have also seen done. I love local crafts but also Mexican ones as well having traveled extensively and collected there throughout my life. When I bought my hime here I also bought a new van and traveled throughout Mexico to my favorite crafts spots like Dolores Hidalgo near San Miguel Allende and also Puebla for talavera serving dishes etc. I went to Taxco for silver serving pieces....Michoacan for lacquerware...etc etc and added Guatemalan carved furniture pieces.and other crafts to my mothers antiques and it turned out wonderful. Most of all my home is filled with memories of two lifetimes....my mothers as a US State DEPT employee abroad and mine as a travel lover.
I loved every minute of this video! I wanted to decorate my conservatory in a boho style. Didn't realise that's exactly the rest of my house 😂 having travelled a lot with work I have loads of trinkets I've picked up in different countries in different styles, so my 'clutter' is actually genuine boho style 🤣 can't wait to tell my mum!
Ohhhhh thank goodness, I'm doing it correctly! I've been guessing my way through the boho look but according to Nick, the only thing I'm missing is a gallery wall. Thank you for this amazingly helpful video Nick!
Thank you very much from Europe. You are a real pro what decorating is concerned. I am renovating my apartment and your videos help a lot. Have a healthy and happy New Year, better than 2020! Yuuki
For real Boho decor, look up ‘Charleston’, the house where Virginia Wolfe and the ‘Bloomsbury Set’ lived and stayed. No wall was left unpainted, floors were painted, cupboards were decoupaged or painted. Beds and chairs and sofas were colourful with eclectic fabrics, shawls and rugs. Absolutely beautiful. And.....I’ve subscribed. 😃👍
Yassss! Def my style. Collecting things from my travels & putting them all over my house. My home is very personal, there is nothing that I just bought randomly to fill space.
So I guess my style is “Authentic Farmhouse Boho.” I live in a farmhouse that has been in my family for over 50 years, and I have inherited from all 7 of my aunts, my grandmothers, and my mom (who went all over the world with my dad’s Army career!)
@Emily Evans That is exactly the style im looking for i'm mostly DIY an old farmhouse I just bought bold colors on the wall Painting my Kitchen Cabinets Teal with mexican tile backsplash !
@@angelikafieseler741 , oh I wish I had known! I let some beautiful MEXICAN tile go when I moved to this farmhouse. I would gladly have sent them to you! Your home sounds beautiful!
I love the boho eclectic look but never sure how to achieve the look and feel. I’m also a diyer so thank you for the tips and advice! To me simple boho chic is more about the feeling in a space not just the items in the room. Like you said your decor and style should tell a story and reflect who you are! Love your videos
I came across this video by chance ... so I watched it .... no I have some ideas to finish of decorating my living room .... I need some gold paint now and some plants and a tapestry for a wall ....( and a skip for some Junk!!!! ) I love rag rugs as they’re multi coloured ... thank you ... I’m pleased I found you 🥰.... happy me
This video has inspired me to continue and finish up my room decoration. I have boxes of memorabilia, playbills, signed posters that I keep putting off framing and hanging and displaying! Thank you for the renewed inspiration!
I started out thinking I was a fan of traditional, but now I like the idea of adding in some boho elements. I never would have thought that would be the case. I like the idea of found items with a story.
So Mid Century. A few years ago it was YUCK! Now everybody loves Mid Century accept me. It remains me the furniture that I want my mom to get rid of for ages. LoL
@@slonecznikdoniczkowy my parents have mid-century tables that neither fit in their new living room nor match the decor. Yet they won't replace it because it's "still nice" and would be wasteful. I'm like dang just sell it while there is some kind of market for it. Get a smaller table that fits the new house.
@@ohifonlyx33 It's just become so astonishing stupid when those young kids are saying they love mid century. They don't even know wtf is that. Like dinosaurs era, maybe? I just bought one table for $20+ 6 chairs, refurbishing and here is your dream table kids! I know my stuff and I was born in the 70. I truly hate mid century. I should be named number one troll fof it for sure! I can read a book about it, but I'm Polish... and fuck mid century once again because you can find it all over Estern Europe as no one wants it. Yeah, it was in nice condition for to long. You made my day!
My home I grew up in was Boho/mid century. My mums from Argentinian so lots of tapestry and loves colour. Also parents were poor and bought second hand.
yes i love simplicity in life and i realized the Boho in me is that kind of mute color , the color palette cream and white or peach is very feminine classic and i also find it very close to Sandi / minimalist but a little busy but not eye soring. The biggest lesson i learned from you is that all and every style re beautiful as long as they are done correctly. Thank you Nick for another great video, nd looking forward to next one. xoxoxo all the way from Toronto
YES they are all beautiful in their own way. You just have to find the style that reflects what you love. I appreciate the art in all the styles even if they aren't my personal taste!
Thank you so much for these tips! I love colors, patterns, different textures. I have a crochet armchair cover and my mom gave me 2 kilim rugs she made 25 years ago. It looks great, homey, and personal. My husband calls it “your personal interesting museum” 😆
I love your channel Nick. I have seen some super busy boho chic designs. But as a “bc” person myself, I find cottage core to throw me back in time to a period I can’t quite pinpoint. I like it, but then I don’t. I always would feel like I’m in a really cute bed and breakfast that I’d be ready to leave after a few days. It gives me Jessica Fletchers house. But I guess some design style is regional. She lived in Maine. However I could see a boho chic living room and a cottage core kitchen in the same home actually. 😳
