Start rinsing the dishes off. Manufactures do not put disposals in dishwashers anymore and haven't for years. There is only a small fine screen to stop food particles that gets stopped up if you do not remove it and clean all the garbage that you leave on. the dishes No dishwasher or dishwasher soap will clean all the garbage off your plates or other items in the dishwasher. Their ads claiming their products will clean it all are fake and lies!!!
Used your superb tutorial to clean out my dishwasher for the first time since moving into my home 3 years ago. Thank you for being so thoughtful and clear with this video! I feel accomplished at learning a new skill.
This was a life saver in my opinion!! I've never cleaned my dishwasher EVER! Now, following this step by step simple tutorial I finally did it!! I feel soooo good can't express! Thaaaank you!!
IT really works, his filter looks clean compared to mine - grossest stuff ever!! I live in an apt with years of use. I am also a firm believer in cleaning with vinegar - no chemicals! and cheap. I use it for drain cleaner with baking soda and vinegar.
The state of that filter is the result of the consistent use of eco or short cycles. To avoid the inside of a dishwasher from getting this dirty it is best to use the hottest and longest cycle available and do so frequently. Eco and short cycles do not use enough water and water that is hot enough to properly clean the dishes and the insides of the machine. Before appliances went 'eco' there was never any need to run cleaning cycles on dishwashers and washing machines, they kept themselves clean and they did their job in less than half the time.
Right. Saving few dollars on electricity and water usage, but after few years dishwasher ends up on wastefield. Old ones can still run even after 20 years. Now tell me, what is more Eco? New dishwasher after 3, 5 years?
Omg you are a life saver... Its the exact same dishwasher I have and always wondered how to deep clean this specific one. Thank you so much for sharing this...❤
I cleaned out the dishwasher in the apartment I moved into and it was the same model as yours. When I removed the filter and the screen there was a very thick deposit of a blue pasty putty like substance. Which I guessed was probably soap scum built up from years of not being cleaned in combination with the hard water we have in my city. The screen was completely clogged with the blue stuff and I had to scrub it with a long bristled brush to open up the holes. Mine didn't have any mold or mildew in it though.
Our rental agency got this exact same model to replace the previous, 30 year old dishwasher. Within two months of use, we had the same buildup of soap scum, except it also had mold. I’ve never seen a dishwasher need to be cleaned that quickly, and those weren’t brand new. Had it been my choice, I would’ve bought a Bosch.
This video is SO helpful. We have a similar dishwasher so that was a lucky break. Before I had tried to dismantle whatever was on the bottom before but couldn't figure it out. W/this video I knew what to take out first and how, and what to take out second. So helpful. Our air vent cover at the inner top of the door is different so I just left that. Couldn't pry it open. Love that you use basic household substances to clean. We don't have bleach to use on the filter, so I used soap and scrubbing w/an old toothbrush, then 70% rubbing alcohol and more scrubbing. Doing the high temp vinegar cycle now. Eager to do the 2nd cycle with baking soda next. You have me excited to finally clean our dishwater. Who would have thought. Thanks!!!
@@ApartmentMaintenancePro YES it did thanks to YOU!!!! Going forward we will wash the filter weekly and then do the whole process from the video monthly.
I would have never thought of cleaning the dishwasher like this. Had I not saw some gunk by the screen I would not have investigated. My dishwasher is 5 years old and I'll tell you when I pulled the filter and screen off it looked like a toxic waste fill. The sickest thing I've seen...and to think my dishes & eating utensils were swimming in that waste. I'm cleaning my filter once a month now and keeping an eye on everything else.
Have had to spend two weeks at my mom's house while she's on vacation. My parents have been coughing...looked at the dishwasher out of boredom...OMFG. Thanks for the tutorial..I've never thought a dishwasher could harbor so much mold in it. Hope it helps their coughing.
Thank you thank you! I was fixing to buy a new dishwasher but I’ve never cleaned it so thought I’d try that first. Its perfect now! Just have to find a video to fix top rack now lol
I’m on Thanksgiving break from school and trying to catch up on some housecleaning, including my very gross dishwasher. Thanks for the clear instructions!
Thank you. The inside looks exactly like my dishwasher so extremely easy to follow instructions. I never knew till rteently you had to lean dishwashers.
Perfect job! A lot of people think you can just wipe the interior down and the door seals and clean the filter and then it’s good to go. No, the cleaning cycles are extremely necessary. The machine can sanitize itself by not only whatever cleaner you prefer but the heat of the water by ensuring you select options to cycles like HI TEMP and or SANI to properly sanitize the dishwasher. Since there’s no dishes the full force of the wash arms can focus on the interior while the cleaner in the water cleans the sump and pump module as it runs ensuring a fully cleaned and rinsed result.
I throw one of those cleaner tabs in there without any dishes every few months when i think about it. Dishwasher is old enough i can't find it on whirlpools site and I've been here 7 years and never cleaned the filter. Going to give it a go. Anxious to try the baking soda hack. I was generally reading about not mixing baking soda and vinegar to clean and specifically they say to use baking soda for cleaning and vinegar as a rinse. Either order, posters machine looks great now!
Thank you. I have the same dishwasher. We rent from my father in law. I asked him a couple months ago how to clean the bottom, because i knew there was stuff clogging the screen. He said you dont need to clean it. Im so glad i found this video. Mine was much worse than yours. 🤢
For scrubbing away filth and a build up of stains and things that are hard to remove, half a mug of dishwasher powder or 3 tablets, half a mug of washing up liquid and biological laundry detergent in a large bowl of hot water is a very affective way to clean pretty much anything, including dishwashers. Citric acid after this intensive wash is also a good idea because it removes limescale and stuck on stuff. I have done this many times and it's really the best combination of products and the citric acid is done last as it will come up sparkling and smear free.
Do you place the bowl with this mixture on the top rack and run a full cycle? After that you run a cycle with the citric acid? Did I get it right? Thanks for the tip! 😊
@@claudiaoliveira-usa well actually the mixture can poured directly inside the dishwasher, on bottom of the dishwasher. I have heard this from another source, someone who tests various things and they said that instead a tablet going inside the little compartment, they should be placed on the bottom of the washer, I have not tried as I don't have a dishwasher but I do use the dishwasher products because they are very for cleaning especially if you happen to come across something for example you may forgotten about and it's been on the top of cupboard, collecting dust and grease, absolutely amazing for any kind hard to remove stuff.....think hoarder type homes where dirt may be quite deep or very stubborn. The citric acid is great for lots of things, one use is for limescale removal (if you don't like harsh chemicals, good alternative) use it as you would use a rinse aid in your dishwasher, add maybe a spoonful to an ounce of water and use that instead of the rinsing agent. What I like to do is to fill a spray bottle with water and add a few spoonfuls and that makes a great glass cleaner, again, you can buy window cleaner etc but it's got so many uses, I use it in cooking also and for a nice lemon tea. May I ask what the problem is, is it just that over your dishwasher collected residue but it's clean, it just has water marks? If this is the case then I would sprinkle maybe half a mug or glass at the bottom of the washer and put it on a wash, maybe add more if quite severly full of limescale. Hope this helps?
I'm curious if anyone here has run this through their dishwasher? Washing up liquid i think is British for what Americans call dish soap and half a mug might cause a sudsing overload??
@@woodstream6137 oh this mixture would not be for a dishwasher, I would never recommend such a high quantity of soap etc as it foam up and cause s major issue. This mixture is for if I'm washing something greasy or tough dirt build up, even if it's not mega dirty but if I just want to be able to wash something super quickly. One tablet should be enough for a regular dishwasher, I would add citric acid occasionally to either a dishwasher or washing machine but that doesn't cause any build up. I do the same for kettles and irons and when you're finished you can make yourself a lovely iced tea and add a dash of citric acid lol
Ohhhh we! I followed these instructions yesterday and I was absolutely sickened by the grime on the filter and screen. Yuck! I'll be cleaning mine at least monthly. Thanks for this.
I cleaned the filter and picked up the bottom debris. Otherwise, it looked clean. Then I ran a regular cycle with 34% hydroperoxide solution to remove any odors. If that doesn't get it clean nothing will. I have gallons of the stuff. I use it to remove and clean anything organic.
I'm almost 40 years old and it didn't occur to me until yesterday I may need to clean my dishwasher. Its the old "why clean soap...soap cleans itself" brain misfire!
The first pass of water is a rinse, and it doesn't heat the water. This way the initial rinse cycle is hot. Then, hopefully it's still a bit hot for when the unit starts the wash cycle and it doesn't have to work as hard to raise and maintain the temperature.
I have this same dishwasher. There is mildew in the little things that spin. How do you remove it from there? I clean all the things you showed regularly
My ge dishwasher has standing water in the filter pit, but when I probe the area with (gloved) hands I can’t feel any blockages. Should I call maintenance or can I fix this?
Just replaced by GE Profile from 20 years ago with a new Boch. We gave the GE Profile to my step mother and it is still working and squeeky clean: I never spent any time cleaning it because we always rinse our dishes before putting them into the dishwasher ...
thanks for the video! I followed your instructions and when I pulled out the filter it was sitting in water. Does that mean there's a blockage of some sort or is that ok?
@@ApartmentMaintenancePro Mine probably had about 1.5 cups of water sitting at the bottom of the filter area. Not sure because I scooped it out with about 25+ scoops of a disposable coffee scoop. It was gross water, but that was probably because the whole machine was gross and in need of cleaning. I am SO grateful for this video. I'll check that water in the future to make sure it's not gross. Is 1.5cups of water or so OK?
@@JWHealingthere shouldn’t be too much water sitting in the bottom. Look up a video on how to check the drain pump at the bottom. You probably have debris stuck in there and it’s very common on these dishwashers like the one he showed. If the water is murky and smelly that’s also not a good sign. Check the hoses also, where it connects to the sink for any debris. But more than likely it’s your drain pump. It’s fairly easy to remove and clean tho, you just need to remove the bottom kickplate and twist it to the left, the video on RU-vid shows exactly how, if you can’t find it let me know
Awesome ours is so gross I could cry I keep the filter clean but it gets mold in it and a jelly like residue . I’m going to clean it tonight and hope ours turns out as nice as yours . Thank you for the tip .
I do this too…pop on of those cleaning tablets into the dishwasher and hit “self clean”…I also run an affresh tablet through the disposal. Keeps the dishwasher smelling nice and in top top shape.
Can you tell me the purpose of running the water in the sink before starting the cycle. I always thought we shouldn't run the sink water while the dishwasher on but I don't recall were I heard that
Water entering the dishwasher should be 120f. You don’t want cold water entering, although the heating element can heat up the water, most won’t be able to do so to the required 140f for proper sanitation 👍
I have a GE dishwasher and no matter how much I clean it it still is getting mold on the walls of it and everywhere else .. is there something I’m missing or doing wrong? I wash my dishes before putting them in as well and they get put away no longer than 20 min after it’s done. Ty
Why run the hot water from the sink and for how long? That was not explained. Going now thru first wash with vinegar. I'm out of baking soda. Will do 2nd rinse later.
Run hot water from the kitchen sink so that only hot water enters the dishwasher when the cycle starts. Optimal sanitation. If you have an on-demand water heater you may not need to do this.
