In this tutorial I'll show you how I design a pluck bass from scratch.
Some of these techniques are what I learnt from other artists like Brainiac, Sonic Species, and E-Clip so make sure to check out their tutorials from _FuturePhonic!
This is a bass that will be used in my psytrance projects.

first bass note on its own track can be high passed. so it doesn't conflict with the kick and you get more transient out instead of just lowering volume
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 3 года назад
Thanks that’s a great idea to preserve transient. I have been using volume shaper with 2 bands to do what you suggested, ducking the lower part while maintaining the mid and highs that way you get a bit of groove between the Lower part of bass and kick as they transition into each other. Adjusting the volume (velocity) of each note can help with creating additional groove as well.
@Martin-vj7zx
@Martin-vj7zx 3 года назад
Maybe a good idea would be just a shelfing filter for the first bassnote in its own group for the lows and turn it down around 6db

bezonance i have another question. i am very confused about the envelope in silent 1. when i have 0 decay and full sustain shouldn't it sound like a pluck? i am really confused about this. i would understand if it has full decay and full sustain but 0 decay. when i have 0 decay this means the volume would go instantly down or no? or does it hold the volume, but isnt that the purpose of the decay?
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 3 года назад
Decay is the time it takes for the sound to go from it’s peak to the sustain level, since your sustain is full then there is no difference between the peak and sustain so the decay will have no audible effect, for it to become a pluck sound needs to go to peak and then decay to 0 or close to 0 sustain so the decay then creates that pluck transient when going from peak to silence (or any level that is significantly lower than the peak), best way to understand this is to draw it on a paper. draw an ADSR envelope on the paper and you can easily visualize it. hope this helps

First of all great tutorial and really professional work mate! Also you have really nice tunes! 1 question: do you use also lfo tool for sidechain or do you stay only with the bounce bass notes with the first one velocity down?
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 6 лет назад
Thank you for your feedback mate. I rarely use sidechaining or lfo tool for this kind of bassline. First 1/16 note is only kick, 2nd 1/16th note is low amplitude bass and decay of the kick so they kind of complement each other. and 3rd and 4th 1/16th notes are only bass (Maybe with a low amplitude tail of the kick which glues everything together) so there is really no need to sidechain here. If you do sidechaining that would be for creative purposes but in terms of being able to get the clean tight kick and bass I like to have full control over kick and bass therefore I use the method shown in this video instead of side chaining.

Hey do you make feedback or lfo modulations on saturn? Also im wondering if i should touch tge mix knob
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 4 года назад
Hey, Yeah i use saturn extensively for sound design and modulate many parameters depending on the sound I’m after, not so much for this kind of bass but more for sounds with lively texture, as for touching the mix knob again it depends what you are looking for, it definitely has it’s own place, for example if you saturate the sound very aggressively you may want to just mix a tiny bit of it to the original sound so your original sound doesn’t lose it’s power, it really depends

Why do i need to seperate the base in its own bands?
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 3 года назад
It does help with defining the sound better, so you have better control over each part of the bass and can easily define the transient, punch etc..

Hi there. Great tutorial. Pretty new to all this. I have a couple of questions - When you are using the multi band compressor , are you just trying to beef up the low end? And what is the idea in using the “phase” tool at the end? I can’t get my head around why you are doing this? If you have triplets playing (not on the kick) why would there be phase issues :-/ Help! Thanks mate!
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 4 года назад
Hi and welcome! for the multiband, the idea is to create separation between low mid and highs and give them each more definition. With regards to phase I’d have to go back and watch the video to see why I used phase in this tutorial (it’s been so long), but generally you would use phase for either correcting relationship between 2 overlapping sounds for example if tail of your kick ends after the transient of the Bass. You may also use phase creatively to change the starting point of your waveform, depending on where the initial point of waveform starts the sound can change and in the case of a the bass actually quite drastically I would say, to understand this better just have a sine wave playing, put phase shif on it and watch how it changes in oscilloscope as you change the phase, and listen how the transient and body of the bass change specially between 90 degree phase difference. the. try with a saw wave and hear the difference. Without an acoustically treated room you may not be able to hear the difference but the difference is really huge. Happy learning. Cheers

Can you share the Kick 2 preset please? Or at least the sample? This kick sounds better than the one in the kick tutorial.
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 6 лет назад
Hey man, thanks for watching! I probably spent some more time to fine tune the kick from that tutorial to fit better with this bass and I haven’t used anything more than what I showed in the original tutorial it’s just a matter of perfecting it, unfortunately I will not be sharing samples or presets, my purpose is to teach people how to do sound design which is exactly what I shared in these videos, the rest and spending time to come up with solid sounds is up to yourself :), if you have any questions with regards to the tutorial I’d be happy to help.

Good tutorial....i have a question...how do you manage to keep kick and bass phase aligned after eq'ing?
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 6 лет назад
you can add phase correcting plugins like pha-979 at the end of your chain on eiher kick or bass if needed, sometimes phase shift is needed and sometime time shift (as each plugin may add small delays to the signal so you would need to adjust the track start position which can be done with track delay). I personally like bouncing my Bass after all the processing and EQ and phase is done and placing it precisely where it needs to be
@adrianconsta1139

Hey, mate! Thank you for this in-depth tutorial. I would have some questions regarding some stuff from it. First, are there any other advantages for working with audio and let go of the plugin and midi, other than that velocity trick? I didn't see any other audio editing in this tutorial. Would you still work this way if you would have a melodic bass? Second, I have listen to some of your tracks and among other qualities, they sound really loud. Could you please advise what are the things that makes them loud? And I'm not asking about the master bus limiter here. :)) I can understand from your tutorials why kick and bass sound loud, but from your tracks, even the back & dark instruments (like the pads) sound loud. Could you please share some tips regarding this? I hope I'm not too pushy and demanding with this. :)
@BEZONANCE
@BEZONANCE 5 лет назад
Hey man, you are welcome! Here is some answers! First, are there any other advantages for working with audio and let go of the plugin and midi, other than that velocity trick? Sampled audio has it’s advantages and disanvantages, advantage is your sound will be consistent since you are exporting to sample and using the sample this is particularly useful for kick and bass that you want consistency across your track, other advantage of sample is you see the entire sound and you can see if there is any tails that go to the next 16th that might interfece with your kick or even the transient of your next bass! for example if the fourth 16th of your bass in one bar has a tail it will interfere with the next kick from the next bar and might destroy your kick! When I export my sample it is usually after I have done all my processing I may export to audio so I can place it precisely where it needs to be in relation to the kick and then I’ll make sure to trim the end of the bass if there was any tail added to the sound during saturation and other processing! (This happens all the time and very important to take care of for a solid and clean sounding kick and bass) Would you still work this way if you would have a melodic bass? For melodic bass you can make a multisample instrument by exporting the bass at different notes and then using sampler to create an instrument out of this, then you can easily use midi to write your melodic bass and have the freedom of midi with the consistency from sample. I also find Serum envelope and oscillator (with rand off and phase set) consistent enough that sometimes I just use the Synth and don’t export to audio (can get around the tail issue I explained earlier by adding volume shaper and making sure it doesn’t interfere with the kick), if you are using synth you need to absolutely make sure your amp envelope is set short enough that tail from your bass doesn't go into the start of your next bass and leave a few ms of room even for tail added by additional processing! Tricky balance but possible! Second, I have listen to some of your tracks and among other qualities, they sound really loud. Could you please advise what are the things that makes them loud? I usually work at really low levels, a trick I use to force myself to turn everything down is I use a utility on master channel and set volume to +15 or something, this forces me to turn down the volume on each channel by 15dB so I don’t go into red which I can visually keep an eye on all the time, so essentially I’m mixing at -15dBFS to begin with, as the track gets busier I may turn the utility on master a little down until I reach +9dB at that point I know I still have 9dB of headroom when I turn the utility on the master off at the end of my work, this leaves a ton of headroom at the end for all sorts of processing that is done in mastering. This might be why the tracks are ending up load when they are mastered, also by working at low audio levels I can hear everything better as I’m not distracted by the power of kick and bass! I do use a ton and by that I really mean a ton of distortion and saturation on my sounds to make them more harmonically rich which translates to being louder somewhat! Hope this helps friend!

Probably late to the party, but I'm hoping someone can help. I'm very new at this. Using the same settings, when lowering the octave to -1, the whole Q2 shape loses those clear bumps and just becomes a lopsided fuzzy mess. I played around in Ableton preferences and I can get a shape closer to one in the video by reducing the Sample Rate to the bare minimum: 22050. What could cause this?
@BEZONANCE

Hi, I don’t quite understand what you are trying to achieve, maybe record your screen and send me a DM on soundcloud I’ll see if I can help you out. EQ settings are relative to your key and note that you are trying to tame so you can’t just use the exact same settings that you saw in this video for different bass sounds

@BEZONANCE 6 лет назад
not sure if I understand the question, the translation is not that great. but if I understand correctly you are experiencing some delay in hearing the audio. few things to check, check ableton’s preferences and set your buffer to lower number any buffer over 512 samples will introduce noticeable latency. also some plugins introduce latency like fabfilter if set to linear phase and on higher setting or any UAD plugin and many others. You can get a better response by contacting ableton.
