How to DESIGN a RAISED BED GARDEN: 10 SIMPLE STEPS

Raised-bed gardens are a popular option for starting a garden. Correct raised-bed garden design helps maximize the productivity of the available space. A well-designed raised-bed garden also adds beauty to your yard.
Gardening with raised beds has several advantages:
• The soil mix you fill the beds with ensures the best growing conditions for gardening from the beginning, rather than having to deal with existing soil issues such as rocky or compacted soil.
• Drainage issues improve because the growing surface is above the ground level and water drains out easily.
• Raised beds warm-up earlier in the spring, allowing you to get a jump on planting.

Great info. Thanks for sharing! Wish I'd seen this before I laid out my beds. I'm in Florida where we can garden year round. I didn't take into account the change in the sun's position in the sky and my winter crops in the south end of my garden are being shaded by my house (bed is too close to North side of my house). It's not an issue in the summer. Will have to adjust what I plant in the south end next year. Always learning!

Start small and grow into this. Try working with one raised garden where you think one would work best. Once you find that you need more space add another bed and in the arrangement that you think will work well for two beds. Only after that would I say you should start thinking about putting in a watering system. And then maybe not even for another year or so until you know for sure where you want your beds to be.

For those of us plagued with rodents, rabbits, Moles and Voles having a raised bed that is tall enough they can't access the veg so easily and having wire mesh at the bottom of the bed before filling it helps save years of disappointments. I've seen some stack IBC totes on pallets to keep the critters out and make it a nice height to work in. If you can't bend down very well they now have 24" deep planter boxes with legs and wheels.

I'm planning a garden in a new home I just bought. We have .62 acres and the backyard where I plan on doing the garden has all day unobstructed light facing south The fence line will be on the north side of the property. I plan to do six beds 4 ft by 16 ft with the first row of three and then the second row of 3 with cattle panel trellises crossing between one and two and two and three and then between 4:00 and 5:00 and 5 and 6 so 4 trellises 16 ft long. My question is how much space should I have between the first two trellises and the second two trellises so that I'm not casting shade on the second set? I have been planning on a 4-ft spacing from east to west between the beds just not sure how far back I should put the second set of beds that will be on the north side of the first set. I don't really have enough room east to west to put six across without taking up the entire backyard. Thank you 👍

Hello, I was wondering if you think it's ok to build raised beds on a cement pad. A lot of homes where I live, people seem to always cover their whole yard in cement(small yards). I am probably going to purchase a home that has this, and I don't know if to remove the cement, or if it's ok to just build beds over it. Would there be drainage issues or something that you'd know of?
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 2 года назад
It would not be my first choice. If you must then be aware of drainage - hopefully the cement isn't in a low spot in the yard. Also be aware the cement may heat up and retain heat more than other areas without cement. There might be other issues as well, but those are the ones that come to mind. They do have elevated raised beds which may be a good option.

I put cardboard in my raised bed on the bottom layer. Within 2 years rhizome grass grew up through all of them. I had to end up tearing it all up, this year I found some plywood to put underneath most of them. Replacing the soil in your beds every two years, is not an option for me. I can go buy can food cheaper than growing it. Next year the raised beds will be sold on facebook, I'm done.

Cardboard is actually biodegradable, which is why grass grew through it. You'll probably want to get something like the weedcloth she had in the video.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill, just get out in the morning give a little bit of water at a nighttime just give it a little bit of water 10 minutes or 15 minutes out of your day and you're done and you don't have to do that piping and all that plumbing and all that craziness if you're so lazy and you can't get out there and water it by yourself then you should not have a garden
@lidiyakruglov

Irrigation systems are not for lazy people, it’s just a convenience if you need to go somewhere for few days and you live in a very dry climate. I installed it too, just because we moved to an area where we didn’t have friends and family, and we wanted to go camping with kids for 4 days, and I had no idea who to ask for help to come every single day to water my plants. And they would die in 4 days in 100F heat.
