How to design-build an eco-friendly and low-cost urban mud house in Delhi NCR, India?

Is it easy to design and build an eco-friendly and low-cost mud house in a city like Delhi? Veena Lal, who runs a charitable society for destitute children by the name of Karm Marg, has made it possible. Her organization, organic farm, and mud house are located in sector 84, Faridabad in Delhi NCR region.
This video is about Veena Lal's house built within her organic farm. She is a firm believer in sustainable architecture and designing habitats for optimum use. She has applied the same for her own house and went ahead with the decision to build with mud. After years of research, travel, and a global pandemic, the house was finally complete in 2021. It is built from 70% sun-dried mud bricks (adobe bricks) and 30% fired bricks, cement, and stone.
Ar. Amol Mankeekar was appointed for designing and executing the project. Amol, a 30-yr old young architect, has been specializing in mud structures and was associated with the late Didi Contractor (Delia Narayan Kinzinger) who specialized in natural buildings and had received the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2019.
Amol designed the house in a 'plus' shape to open each space to at least 2-3 open sides and allow maximum ventilation in the house. The house was supposed to be built completely in mud but due to maintenance issues, one leg (comprising all the utility spaces such as toilets, staircase, bathroom and wash area) was built in fired bricks and cement. The whole house is designed to keep water consumption and water flow in mind. Hence, all the water is channeled naturally towards 2 sets of banana trees that soak up the water and its nutrients. Even the toilet is a dry toilet without any flush or sewage system. The human waste is treated to prepare compost which is then used on the organic farm. Air conditioning is not required as the house is well ventilated and maintains the temperature inside the house. This is also because of the thick mud walls and mud floors that insulate the house well too. The backside faces the north and is used in summers, while the front side faces the south and is thus used in winters. There are various other features in the house design that have been incorporated according to Veena Lal's preferences.
According to Didi Contractor, "The house should be like a set, where life can take place. It should blend as much as possible. It shouldn't stand out. The house shouldn't be an identity in itself. It should just provide a space for that person's life to happen."
Also, for her sustainability meant, "you do whatever is possible from your side and then a little more. There is no 1 end goal. There is always a spectrum."

@@shristipandey5620 Mud houses can survive heavy rainfall because it is strong due to the quality of raw-material used and the process which they use to make them. That being said, even concrete buildings fall down during heavy rainfall, and floods. Many people say mud houses don't survive heavy rainfall, cause they've either only seen low quality make-do-mud houses or those made using techniques that aren't right. Also, many of them don't know what they're talking about, and are only influenced by these thoughts - "Mud houses are only for poor" & "western way of living is better"

yes i watching a video about a very charming European equivalent but that was the catch and then there may be questions of regulations when it comes to buildings and plumbing. It's interesting to think about in terms of problem solving, it seems like you can build out of clay with less difficulty than might be expected which is a novel concept. But this won't necessarily have anything to do with the normal plumbing requirements of buildings and whatever structural requirements and costs that involves. In a way, if you also don't have running water (trying to remember if that was the case in the other build), you're kind of going back to before modernity in the sense that it's now accepted that functional buildings must have plumbing. But of course that didn't used to be the case and even after WW2 in Europe, it seems there are people who remember not living with a flushing toilet indoors in the 60s and 70s. In Sydney a lot of the terrace houses had outdoor toilets and the way sewage waste was dealt with before flushing toilets was by "nightsoil collectors". Of course in terms of public health and minimising disease spread, changes in plumbing have been associated with improvement in health. However, I'm not sure there's anything especially unhygienic about a "long drop", but they remain a very unpleasant concept. i guess it's worth it in some situations, i assume plumbing is very expensive, to the point that instead of a flushing toilet you could buy another block of land for another building. (Edit: writing at the start of the video, for some reason i thought this was going to be a schoolhouse for disadvantaged kids, i don't know why, and i was thinking that the best means to an end in that context.) The only disease risk i can think of is if there were some kind of biting insects also attracted to waste. It's a bit gross to think about. I'm thinking about tsetse flies now, but they are from a completely different continent. Probably India has its fair share of freaky insects tho..

@@veenachandu1 A couple of honest questions - how does the dry toilet system handle excreta when one has gastrointestinal infections - does the sawdust / mud cover it so that it does not spread through the compost? Or is there some herbal germicide that can be used to ensure that the compost is free of microbes that cause dysentery, cholera, or other gastro diseases? I assume that the pit will be closed to as to prevent flies from entering and then spreading infections around, correct? Secondly, have you had any worms, pests or unwanted insects grow in the composted material? If not, was it due to some precaution you took (herbal germicide or insectide like say turmeric or neem ) or are such bacteria tolerated by manure and not passed up into the plants above the soil after use as manure for plants? Does turmeric and neem destroy the viability of the compost? I really love the concept of composting and I wish more frontline research went into designing solutions to mitigate risk of infectious diseases and disease carrying pests from compost. This will save so much water and is the natural way of excretion for most of human history.

I love the concept, the subtle small artworks throughout the walls of the house both in the exterior as well as in the interior are a bonus point that adds to the overall aesthetics of the house. Beginning with the shape of the house designed as a functional aspect to the ventilation works everything about this house speaks architectural perfection. But as an architect myself, I'm curious to know about the structural framework of the building, as to how a mud house supports a floor above the ground floor? Is it a load bearing structure? How is the slab constructed? I'd really appreciate if you guys let me know about the structural works of the house.

Sustainably built house with such pleasing aesthetics too! The compost toilet is a wonderful idea which can even provide methane gas for cooking, but the open bath might be an invitation for unexpected wild life (?) although I love the concept.

People are nowadays running after urban homes but this is the idea of village home . during my childhood I have seen a lot of homes like this in my village it was wonderful at that time but slowly people criticised the mud house and now everyone is praising

I'm from Trinidad and Tobago, where there's a huge Indian population. I discovered 'modern' mud houses through RU-vid but after having a conversation with my mom, she fondly recalls visiting her Indian friend's home as a child, which was built out of this material. I'm sure Trinidad still has them, mostly in the Southern region. It'll be a cool thing to see more architect of our times discuss how to revitalize these homes in different regions around the globe based on the climate, especially with "climate change"

Nice to see sustainable and economical houses. We are producing our own ecological bricks and building our house ourselves with the bricks we produce. Soon, we will show how to produce and build with them. You save tons of money doing that!
