@@Mellysews For the patterns, is it possible if I can use Prisma colored pencils to design them? I plan on drawing my patterns lightly with a pencil, then I will color them in with the colored pencils, and then I will scan them using my printer. Or maybe I can draw patterns using ink or fine liners? Because I am not very good at using watercolor paint or any other kind of paint in general so I was wondering if that could be an option

I have a contract with a fabric company that I design for, so that wouldn't be applicable to your question. For personal fabric printing you could look at MyFabricDesigns.com but none of the custom fabric companies are inexpensive as it's costly in terms of labor to print small quantities of custom fabric.

@@Mellysews Hello, I love your designs! I chose actually picked your designs up for the company I used to work for as a quilting fabric to use. I quit my job as my mother and I want to design fabric independently. I was wondering since COVID-19 has cancelled all conventions and Quilt Market, how have designers been showing their fabric to companies for them to buy? We missed out last year and it sounds like everything is canceled for this year too.

This is perfect! I have a project where I need to do exactly what you have done. Do you have some material going in depth on exactly how you set up your canvas, what functions you use to move them around to ensure it matches, how to smooth edges, how to change the colour profiles etc. I'm still feeling a little lost and not sure what to do, or is there even a course online you could recommend? :)

Hello Melly! I just found your channel and your beautiful designs. It is a very useful video, thanks a lot! I have a question. When you work on your I pad and use a watercolor brush, do you always vectorize it on Illustrator? Im finding quite hard to keep the watercolor effect after vectorizing it. Can you use it just as it is done in the iPad, or that wouldn't work well when printing on fabric? I hope to get your answer :)

With my fabric, I'm limited to 16 colors, so I have to eliminate some of the gradient or do it by spacing out dots of color.

Hi, I'm a beginner textile designer learning basically from work but we use nedgraphics. I find it so much easier to use nedgraphics, I am wondering if you ever used that program instead of photoshop? I dont know how to really do repeats on photoshop but after watching some videos I find it to be much more difficult. My question should I take the time to learn how to do it on photoshop for future jobs? Is photoshop the industry standard for surface design?
@Mellysews
@Mellysews 5 лет назад
I did not do formal training for textile design, and I am not familiar with that program. I also don't do my repeats in photoshop, I prefer to use Illustrator, as do the majority of the other fabric designers I know.

This is beautiful and thanks for insight. But how do you get the manufacturer/Riley Blake to buy it from you? Did you just email the company with images? I guess I'm asking how do you get your designs published? What's the protocol for that? Thanks!
@Mellysews
@Mellysews 2 года назад
I have a contract with them. The process is the same as getting a design contract with any company - you'd want to build a portfolio first, and then either get an agent or network to find the creative director contacts within the industry you want to work in. It also helps if you have an audience full of fans of your work - creative directors like licensing designs that have a built in audience to market to.
