Simple modern update using minimal new materials. I've never understood why anyone puts a wine shelf above the fridge, the hottest place in the house is the kitchen at the ceiling. Turning wine to vinegar. Wine should b stored @ 55° (45-65° F). It does look nice
My new remodel isn't dark, but I put in a beautiful black concrete counter & did the same technique for the window ceil behind the sink. Its very modern minimalist. My dad calls it industrial, I think that's because of countertops, & I put in Cypress floating shelves & have a wood chest style cabinet (repurposed entertainment) for coffee bar & cork flooring. Base cabinets r painted a pale grey that looks white in light & gets darker in shade/ shadows. Used the same paint throughout the house. Flat on walls, semi gloss on trim & gloss on trim, doors, cabinets & window shutters. The different paint gives a different effect. I have a small 1943 650 sqft bungalow so I couldn't go dark. I just have black throughout.
Open shelves are a come and go, your talking to a family they are gonna use as much space and make it accessible as possible it is just going to get cluttered with food and tableware.
