I like what they did in ATSV by turning the "top heaviness" of Spiderman 2099 into a triangular character design, which in the character design basics makes him seem dangerous and villainous, but also makes his clawing towards miles look predatory and powerful
I've always thought that to create good synergy between the eyes and the logos requires them to be appropriate sizes. TASM2 has big eyes and big logos. Stark Suits have small eyes and small logos. Creating a good balance makes it look less jarring.
but the fortnite suit has big, debatably buggy looking eyes and a pretty small logo yet you made a whole video praising it (which is fair, it’s still a killer suit)
@@QUBIQUBED there is, but its blended in with the suit design so its not immediately noticeable. That, imo, is what makes the spider gwen suit amazing.
I gotta disagree with the criticism on the 2099 and Black suit, the fact that they have no other color other than the primary one on their bottom halfs makes them simple but effective. Adding anything else to the bottom parts would make their suits over complicated imo
I agree, I mean, take the scarlet spider suit for example, I think it would look fine without his ankle pockets. Yet that would make him just ad top-heavy as(if not more than) the black suit and 2099
@@amazingpsm Honestly, in the case of the black suit, I think the little shin-toe spike actually did. The black suit follows a very simplistic formula. It's black, and uses white only where necessary. It has the white logo so it's still recognizably spiderman It has white lenses so he can see And white on his hands where he shoots webs from. The little white things break this formula by serving no other purpose other than to be there. Honestly, I think they would have worked if they were white soles like on miles's suit, but then you have the problem of white being a horrible color to have as a sole because dirt lol (although that maybe doesn't apply to an alien symbiote)
The first 'How to Design Your Spider-Man Suit' was what got me into this channel in the first place. Happy to see that we're getting more of that style of content.
I will say I do think it kinda feels like it needs something- though it should be veeerry specific to where and how much/ what the shape should be for the lower half. I love the square hand parts- so adding something on the feet could work… but it’s gotta be something small
I feel like the actual character and why the suit is like that plays a pretty big role too. Unless the person is only wearing it for cosmetic purposes, you should think "Can they afford this suit?" It boils down to a question of yes or no, so if yes, the suit should look alot like most spiderman suits, although if no, it should look more patched together, with clothing stiching all over it. Take another example: The black suit. The black suit is barebones, i will admit, but for a reason. The alien symbiote does not require it neccessary for any extra decorations, as it was used to just being used as a weapon, rather than a suit. Hell, if it was up to the suit, i dont think the suit would even have a logo to begin with. But its because spiderman is such a big part of peters identity that it has to incorporate it.
i actually think havin pants on the scarlet suit looks cool, but yes accessories have to be apart of the design. i do not think they should be as limited as the scarlet suit. pavitr and hobie are probably my new favourite spiderman costumes because they feel more unique and like they put more effort into putting apart of themselves and their personality into their costumes
I disagree with the "top heavy" idea, 2099 and the black suit are STRONG. Having only emblems on the top half makes it feel like they're wider and beefier, also adding to a feeling of looking up at them
I also recently designed a suit I call "Quintessional" Spider-Man where I combine the Steve Ditko Suit and the Mark 4 Armor. The suit is Red and BLACK and has a BLUE chest logo. Theres also a blue line on the black running from under the arms and inner thigh to the red gloves and boots to mirror the old shading comic techniques. If I you start another discord I'll send it🤷♂️
I think the most 2 useful tips are what colours to use and the 45 percent of one colour and 45 percent of the other colouf. I've thought of this and I've done some sketches and I've updated my old spider man oc.
This is such a helpful and interesting video. Ty for sharing. I'm a gardener and this is going to be in my brain when designing gardens. As someone who doesn't know much about colour balancing at all, is it possible the black suit (and maybe spider99) are purposefully top heavy to give both of them a more intimidating/football player appearance? It contrasts with reguler spidey's swift/agile vibe. When you look at the symbiote spider you think: "Oh this guy is much stronger, and possibly less agile" (which vibes with their personality as well). This is my noob opinion, interested in what you think.
Im 7 months late to replying, but Ive recently rewatched this and seen your comment. I agree with your idea that it gives them a stronger bigger character design. Something that proves this is that in the new spiderverse movie, 2099 is given a design that makes his body more wide and bigger, which makes him seem Top-heavy.
when it comes to accessorizing, I think Miles ITSV suit accessorizes well with his coat and shoes. It bulks up his slim frame and adds a bit more personality over his mostly black suit.
6:41 Yeah, Miles only has red on his sole on his bottom half, that’s not really enough. If he’s stand on the floor, then you can only see red on the top half of the suit and all that’s left on the bottom is the soles you don’t really see.
When it comes to the 2099 and Black suit, I can't help but think that the reason for such top-heaviness is because of the more brutish personalities that come with them. Correct me if I'm wrong, since my 2099 knowledge is slim. However, I think that designing your suit with certain elements to draw the viewer's eye to a certain point like these ones do with the chest- can show off that "This character uses this part of their body a lot". In my belief, the decision to make the suits so top-heavy lends itself to the characters being more punchy or- y'know- 'rip ya apart with their bare hands'.

despite me not agreeing with the fact you praise miles suit for having soles but disliking the 2099 suit and the symbiote suit being top heavy, this is a really great video and i love it as it serves as a helpful guide on designing a good spider-suit with each section giving a detailed teaching on how to do things right and giving examples on stuff that goes wrong. i'll use this for my (fourth) redesign of my spider-man.
When I was 11, I created a suit that had the same layout as the standard suit, but with some major color differences. The primary color was a sort of bright cobalt blue with dark navy blue for its secondary color. The eyes were glowing lime-green and the same shape as the regular eyes, but they lacked the black borders. The front emblem matched the eyes and was based on Insomniac's suit, while the back emblem was cobalt blue linked to the primary areas of the suit. Looking back four years later, I feel like this was a genuinely good design, despite its considerable flaws.
I created a suit a few years ago and I still have that suit as my Spider-Man suit just with a few changes, after watching this video to see if I can upgrade my suit in any way, and find that my suit is fine in its actual design , both versions of my suit are good in actual design
This is rlly helpful in my designing my spider suit I can definitely play with colour placement a bit more in the colour pallet I’ve chosen, and add to my theme way more than I have been because the emblem is the only way you’d know it’s theme
I agree with almost everything in this video but I’ve gotta say that scarlet spider def isn’t the only suit to do accessories well. Miles with his sports wear is great, I love his suit with and without the extras. But, for me the one that I can’t believe you didn’t mention is hobie’s across the Spider-Verse suit. The jacket and boots with blue laces with the spikes and guitar look awesome, even though they’re over a more conventional spider suit
I think the server is down everyone saying they banned and I been trying to figure it out since yesterday. Glad I’m not the only one. Edit: yes the server was deleted. I hope a new one is made eventually. I just started being active there and I don’t know what it was deleted but there are some cool people there and a ton of dope art. The problem is, you want Spider-Man to be cool, but it has to be useful too. A jacket may look badass and cool af, but it's very inconvenient to use in a fight or while swinging. It depends on the clothes.

Also, I like when Spider-Man uses scarfs, gloves (Over gloves), boots, everything like that, but he has to fight crime and all that things make him more vulnerable to criminals and villains, and in his universe, if they can take advantage in a fight and knock out Spider-Man they're gonna take his mask off and kill everyone he knows. That's why it needs to be practical and good‐looking at the same time in universe and in real life.
I like when Pete wears outer wear over suits, it’s that when Peter does that it’s not the default design of the suit. The hoodie is part of the design for scarlet spider.

One suit with more than 4 colours that looks good is the suit that was made when Batman superman and green lantern mixed, it has blue yellow red green black white eyes and I think grey but I’m not sure
I think the 2017 black suit does a pretty good job I may have to look at it again tho yeah I think they did Would've preferred if the back spider connected though and looked more like the classic Symbol
Well, you said you are oke to debate, so; oke, colour ballamcing on the whole body is important, but I would argue the thome shift, making for example the chest area top heavy, as you said, can communicate things as well, like being above all things, or just emphasise the characters buff/hulking stature, so, while in common designe I agree with you, sometimes top/bottom heavy can work as well
Currently trying to design a Spider-Man suit for Tim Drake, aka the third Robin, for a Spider-Man DC crossover I'm writing. (Extra difficult since I only write). But yeah, its proving to be more difficult than I thought. I WANT to include the robin theme, but I can't stand the green and yellow on the robin costume. I figured I'd include the spikes on the forearms, similar to what Batman and Miguel O'Hara have. But yeah, kinda difficult to make a suit and spider-sona that's not only unique to Tim Drake, but also doesn't copy any previous spider-men, AND make it look good. You make it look easy. 😂😂😂
I just have to disagree with the criticisms on top-heavy suits. Notice how all the top heavy suits tend to belong to the more serious spider men. As xavierplayr pointed out, the top heavy suits tend to look bulkier. And in my opinion, all of the top heavy suits look menacing as fuck. I mean look at 2099, you can’t look at him and tell me he doesn’t look scary. The extra color being added to the suit makes him look more flamboyant and playful, which definitely kills the vibe his suit has. Great video nonetheless!
While I personally agree with your top heavy explanation and how it makes sense off paper for balancing, but on paper, black Spiderman suit is a simple design and adding more things seems to conflict with the style(slightly different but basically the same meaning as your theme term, acting as the style the suit is built off and not the ideas represented in the suit, example being iron spider has the “ironman” “theme” while the “style” is “simple”) and(this is just a personal take) your example where you included some white near his feet, really doesn’t mesh with the idea. However 2099 I completely agree on, and some extra red would be nice in balancing his theme, edgy and intimidating and techy, with the “style” being simple. However why i think so is kinda convoluted, each theme has a style within it, or two, or more. The intimidation has many aspects, the claws, the skull spider, and so does the techy aspect, which they served well in across the spiderverse, with the futuristic attributes the suit has being a a nanofiber thing, idk. However the techy implies some other design choices. Overly complicated and detailed looking, or simple with small balanced portions of detail. Think the old iron spider, verses the new infinity war spider-man. I really don’t like infinity war iron spider. Trash. Doo doo garbage. Imagine how cool original iron spider would have been in infinity war. He would have yoinked that glove right off no doubt, 8/10, i dont feel so good Mr.PSM.
My fresh idea for the Spider-Carnage suit: remove the bottom and add blue jeans and black combat boots. Add spike armbands. A black punk vest and the spikes from the mask of the Spider-Punk suit.
What do you think of the spectacular black suit and that synthetic symbiote black suit from MSM...as questionable ad that show's quality was...Patrick Brown pumped out some AMAZING designs...that the show only used a 1/4 of🤦♂️
I disagree with the accessories part, like this may just be for miles but I love when he adds shoes or hoodies to suits like during the leap of faith scene form spider verse or the bodega cat suit from Spider-Man ps4 miles morales and I don’t think Ben Riley pull off the accessories too well either
We need to go back to the fact that SPIDER-MAN 2099 SUIT IS BLACK AND RED that is what the original colour was and I feel like some comics need to bring that back
