I'm a Hort. My smart female indoor pot plant nerds tell me they use a combo of bottom saucer water and on the top of the pot they carefully make holes into the media with there fingers. Here they use a small plastic container to pour water into the finger holes which prevents the top layer from staying moist.

That’s a great tip! I’ve tried that too - actually did it once when I went overseas for 1 week and I grouped them all together against the balcony door and kept the bug zapper on - came back to a cemetery of gnats on the floor 😅

My favourite methods are: 1. Keep your soil on the dry side. Only water your plants when they are dry (unless they require slightly moist soil - species such Calathea or ferns). This is particularly important during winter months when soil tends to stay wet/moist longer. 2. Add a dry sand layer on top of the soil (say about 2cm thick). Gnats may be discouraged to lay their eggs in the substrate. 3. Mixture of Neem oil and water. Next time you water the plants - use that. I sometimes take the plants outside and leave them out to dry. The exposure to more light and wind/air circulation will quicken the drying process and any gnats escaping will be outside and not in the home. Once completely dry I bring the plants inside. In any case, I find plants prefer being outside especially in the spring, summer and autumn months. 🥰💚🙏🏻 Best of luck everyone! 😘

ECHO-ING all of what you've mentioned in your comment! 1) Great tip addition on being especially important during winter months - watering less frequently is definitely a reality! 2) Dry sand layer essentially performs the same as your 'gnat barrier' - do you just go to the beach and take some home with you? :P Just kidding 3) Absolutely, I always add a bit of Neem Oil in my watering once a month as a 'preventative' measure, even though I haven't visibly seen it "do much", but it MUST be doing something! Just make sure the plants aren't exposed too long to direct sunlight outside, amirite? :)

I just use normal ground cinnamon because it takes away the gnats food source. When I repotted, I actually just included it in my putting mix and it seemed to really help.

I've left water, apple cider vinegar and by mistake, my left over coffee that I forgot to take away before bed. The results, one gnat in the water, none in the vinegar as it's mainly for fruit flies and 8 in the coffee. Now I make three cups of coffee for the Gnats each day and place them around the room and every time, there has been six or more gnats in the coffee. I can tell the population is dying off as I'm only finding one or two in one of the cups so I now know the main plant the Gnats are around mostly 😊

What an amazing hack - I have never heard of this method!? Everyone has been telling me that apple cider vinegar attracts them - but if I was a fungus gnat, I’d probably go for the coffee 😂 you definitely should try the tanlin drops though, I’ve never had a problem since I started using them!

I've used a combo of yellow sticky paper (bulk buy and cut up) and these BTI bacteria impregnated granules called Mosquito Bits ordered from overseas. I soak the Bits in water for 24 hours and use the solution to water my plants or mist the soil for humidity. They definitely work because the next day there are larvae corpses on the surface of the soil, which is gross, but satisfying. They're a pretty good solution, but once these are done, I'd be giving Tanlin drops a go because it seems like an equally effective and safe solution, while being much more convenient to employ.

I always wanted to purchase Mosquito Bits from overseas, as I had heard great things from my overseas plant friends - great to hear they are a great working solution (and totally agree as sadistic as it may sound, on how satisfying seeing them on the surface of the soil!). We bombed our house because of our massive gnat problem. I’ve tried most of your other suggestions, including the gnat barrier from Bunnings. I have also noticed degradation in my plants’ health following this being added, especially to the plants that need to dry quickly. I’ve never heard of tanlin drops though. I love your description of how it works. I want those suckers to suffer!

Oh dear! I completely agree with you in regards to the gnat barrier - I've not bought it since 😅 tanlin has been doing me pretty well over the past year! I'll notice a gnat here and there but after watering with a drop of it in the watering can, I don't notice them for an extended period! Hopefully you get your situation under control so you can enjoy your plants ☺️🌱

Not over watering totes helped me control my infestation! I also agree with what you said about the gnat barrier. And LMAO I used ground cinnamon except I used it to control bacteria for mould 🥲

Thank you for the good tips. I have tried the neem oil method, apple Cider vinegar with dish wash detergent and yellow sticky tape. However my case was pretty severe, so I had to move all my plants to the outdoor balcony and had to keep them outside for a while.

Thanks so much for sharing your tips as well! I have too, put a tiny bit of diluted dish washer detergent in the past, but my cases have been so severe that hasn't worked! So good to hear from an Australian with locally accessible products! I did a lot of online research with most products mentioned being from UK/ USA, and finally decided on a neem cake/ mosquito bit tea... but then lost the 'recipe' after finally getting my shipment of products and have done nothing. 🤦‍♀️ I'm also a bit concerned about killing some of my native plants (especially the grevilleas) with this mix as I have no idea how safe it is for sensitive plants! Time for even more research, I guess! 😅

I've used hydrogen peroxide but mainly to help the soil a bit out but what I found effective in destroying the fungus gnats relatively quickly is Aerogard Home Multi Insect Killer (the green one) which you can get from coles or woolies and I just sprayed onto the soil and it worked really well and really quickly. The aerogard is also plant based so it sounds safe enough to use for plants haha and I think also letting soil dry out before using is a good way to preventing the infestations

I had no fungus gnats until I purchased a Monstera from Bunnings. The Monstera itself wasn't the problem but I also purchased a bag of potting mix from their outside section. I got home, replanted it using the bag of soild and.. oh.. my.. god.. Within 7 days they were EVERYWHERE. the neem oil actually helped me quite a bit but used it at a 40/50 (oil/water ratio) and sprayed it onto the soil religiously every second day for 2 weeks. Now I still have a few here and there but its manageable with the sticky strips.

I had the exact same situation! Literally bought one of those indoor potting mixes from Bunnings (brand called Osmocote) and my home was RIDDLED with gnats! I’ve recently purchased more specialised potting mix which costs about triple the price, and I’ll see if it’s any better since I’m due for a repot - but I know exactly how you feel! Very frustrating!

I hate fungus gnats. I’ve tried so many things, peroxide, cinnamon, new soil, baking the soil, mosquito bites tea, neem oil, sand over the top. Only thing that was working is “Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect Killer” hands down! Miracle grow is a bad soil for gnats. I love sticky tabs!

I've just started using the neem cake solution ( 100 grams neem cake soaking in 1 litre of water for 3 days) for my seedlings I do bottom watering. So far its reduced the gnats. See how that progresses. Then I will tanlin drops.

I have loads of orchids + numerous houseplants + carnivorous plants. A bag of miracle grow orchid medium was infested with fungus gnats larvae, unnoticed by me. Which infested all of my orchids then went slowly to the house plants. The main infestation was with the orchids because of the bark in the medium. After tons of research to rid them of delicate orchids. I did let the orchids medium to dry out for 2 weeks, thankfully no harm to the orchids. I also bought the yellow sticky things but also bought the Mosquito Bits from Amazon. The directions on the bag for treating treatment of fungus gnats is a scoop of bits per gal of water. Let birds sit in water for about 20min (I let them sit over night). Skim of bits and water, using treated water, once a week for 3 weeks or more if needed. That worked great, especially when I tossed the other infested bags of miracle grow orchid mix in my outside garden, lol. My gnat problem isn't nearly as bad and the Drosera carnivorous plants are handling the rest, lol.

Hi Hershey! Thanks for taking the time to recount your experience! You literally described my exact scenario with a a bag of orchid potting mix (and I can confirm that it was in fact the orchid potting mix - last week, I checked on my leftovers and when I opened the bag, a bunch of gnats flew out!). What a gruelling experience - thankfully, the 2 week drying out didn't do detrimental impact to your orchids! My continual drying had caused a few of my plants to brown at the tips, but now that they're gone, no more brown tips! Love that you've got carnivorous plants - I have also considered purchasing some too!

@@simpleplanty hi, Thank you for your reply. I've found that the Dosera Filifoformis is great at catching the fungus gnats. But the Nepenthes is a beauty to behold. They're not only functional and a fabulous conversation piece but beautiful as well. P.S. I could really use advise for my monsters Monstera Deliciosa but it would be hard to explain, lol. It's HUGE but it's sending out aerial roots off of its leaf stem. The stem is shaped like a weird S and is got aerial roots coming from all over, probably like a dozen. I don't know how to get it back under control. Sadly I can't attach a picture to show you.

@@hersheyyogeemoyer7919 thanks for the recommendations! I have seen heaps of photos of the Nepenthes, and you're absolutely right - it's a beauty to behold! Regarding your Monstera; I understand what you're talking about, as my own Monstera is quite large and has shot A LOT of aerial roots as it's started to climb up the trellis that I use to support it - I don't usually advocate for snipping the aerial roots off (although, I can confirm I have done it in the past and it has not done the plant harm, however, stunting potential 'growth'). I usually just tuck the aerial roots back into the top layer of the soil (if it is safe to do so - i.e. if you can bend it without harm). I'm going to be building a large spaghnum moss panel next month and going to tuck most of the aerial roots safely into the panel. Will post a video in the next 2 months documenting the process!

Hey there! I use 1 part apple cider vinegar, 2 parts water with 2-3 drops of morning fresh into a jar. I put cling wrap on top of the jar and seal with a rubber band. Then poke a hole in the middle. Basically they get attracted to the smell and go into the jar and fall in and drown. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had terrible infestation. I use ceylon cinnamon, sticky traps, hydrogen peroxide, mosquito bits. Now I'm using tanlin drops, and believe it or not I burn Nag Champa incense. The tanlin drops seem to take care of the larvae and the Nag Champa seems to smoke out the adults. I'm no longer swatting at my face. Nag Champa is a very strong incense and some people are sensitive to it. Well I'm sensitive to gnats! Yes the tanlin drops are a bit pricey but they go a long way. I did have to switch back to top watering until I got them under control.

I can totally relate - it’s funny that after I got the tanlin drops, I no longer had to bother with any of the other methods that you mentioned too - such as cinnamon, sticky traps, hydrogen peroxide, mosquito bits! @@barbaraowens2299 now having 50 plants in a one bedroom apartment is definitely a gift - how did you Tetris all of them in there! I have a 2 bedder apartment and am struggling for space with less! Staking is an easy procedure - you’ll just need to figure out where the nodes/aerial roots are and affix your stake behind it. Otherwise, I do have some other videos that you could potentially watch ☺️ Hope that helps!

@@simpleplanty Careful staging! My windows are south facing with an overhang and trees a few yards away. So the sun is perfect. I've watched your monestera and staking videos. Yes obsessed over those too! This is a beautiful plant but I have nodes in all rear positions no matter how I turn the pot. The vines are in the soil not hanging out. So I've got leaves facing all directions!

Hi I came across your channel and you give really good tips I’m kinda not new to the plant world I would say I love plants all over my house but gnats have been a bit of a problem but keeping an eye out on it I also have a question idk if you can help with it I have noticed there really tiny little little bugs under the pots when I pick it up like on the saucer there just crawling but there super super tiny ones I’m not sure if I should be worried?? any tips thank you !

Hi Kathy! I've actually been experiencing the same thing with a couple of my plants, as well (presuming they're tiny little bugs that crawl around pretty quickly when you pick up the saucer and are a little white/yellow-ish in colour?). I've been doing a mix of a couple things and the key is consistent application - I use white oil spray (or you could use eco oil) to spray down the saucer every couple of days (after washing the saucer with water and dishwasher soap) and then using Neem oil with my waterings to help get rid of them from the soil. Hope that helps 😊

Oh they are nasty aren't they... Great suggestion on video. In case you're in need of some urgent support, I've been using a few products to combat spider mites - vitality plus and rose shield. Give those a go!

When you had enough and wanted to end it all XD : repotting all of them in fresh soil!!! I boil water and drench the new soil first (cooking, then leave to cool), before potting them in. Also using orchid bark mix + perlite + Coco coir (soil free) for better drainage & stop fungal growth (that's their food right??). Haven't heard of Tanlin drops before... But EVERY video calls for Mosquito bits. It's impossible to find mosquito bits in Aus :(

Funnily enough, I went for that exact method of wanting to end it all by repotting all of them in a fresh, well aerated soil only to get an extremely unlucky bag of soil that was infested with fungus gnats which caused an ERUPTION of flying gnat in my household - I was so upset! 😭 Good tip on the boiling water, I'll try this on my next repot. Surely boiling water kills them!? Another person had commented and told me they ordered mosquito bits from overseas. I really don't think we have this here in Aus (as I've never seen it!). @@simpleplanty omg Yasssss, thanks for entering me! 😆 I really feel you, that sucks having that bad bag of soil! I tried the drying out the soil method... And there's still fungus gnats coming out of the dry soil (maybe they haven't all hatch it)... Only having to end up with a burnt and dehydrated Peace Lily 🤣😆. I also have carnivorous plants (Sundews- they can eat fungus gnats... Man it speeds up their growth and flowers like crazy!!), but they like to have boggy wet soil = breeds fungus gnats... IRONIC RIGHT??!? 🤨😂. That's why a chemical/biological factor is needed to kill em at soil level. Hope you do okay in Sydney, us Melbournians are opening up tmr (yayyy plant shopping!)... Don't know how long it'll last again HAHA 😆

@@nyawidborom4901 omg your poor peace Lily! Guess it was waving the white flag/flower once you dried it out 😜 I have mates with sundews and I actually like the look of them too! Funny you say they like moist soils 😂 That's awesome you guys are out of lockdown now and well deserved since sadly Melbourne was on lockdown for so long before (it's unfortunately our turn now 😭😭😭)

Awww you really have to try tanlin drops, they are the absolute best and definitely worth the money/investment. I haven’t uploaded videos in awhile but once I do, I’ll be sure to do a competition again. Thanks for watching 😊

@@bonniejennings3551 hey Bonnie - real sorry to hear that! I'd avoid spraying hydrogen peroxide on the leaves, to be on the safe side. Gnats would not have been introduced from adding this into your substrate, it was likely a brewing infestation. You could try other methods and see how you go 😊
