I had the gearbox off this Toyota corolla which also happens to have a bad leaking valve cover gasket. I thought I'd show inside the bellhousing and why it's a common mistake to think the rear main seal is the culprit, when it isn't.
Good bit of advice! I always like to degrease an engine and use the car for a few heat cycles to correctly find the leak rather than jumping to conclusions. Can’t stand oil leaks either haha!
Thanks mate. I just had my rocker cover gasket replaced 3 years ago but have a new leak somewhere in my 96 Camry V6. How do I know it's the rocker cover gasket for sure?
Stick your hand around the back of the rocker/cam cover and if you have oil on your hands you got a leak. :) To trace any leak, always trace it back to the highest point. If that's hard to see then degrease and clean the whole engine and then check again in a few days. It'll be much easier to see.
Hi, I have a 99 Toyota Rav4, 4wd, automatic, 140k miles, it has a oil leak on the drivers side, the oil drips off of the transfer case, I followed it to the top as best as I can but it's hard to see down in there, I can see that there is a small puddle of oil laying in the low spot of the top of the transfer case, I can feel all round the valve cover and it is dry, so I don't think it is the valve cover gasket. Can you give me your opinion of where the leak could be coming from? Thank you.
@@brendonv101 yes it's def. engine oil, the small puddle is on top of the transmission, not the transfer case, it makes a drip on the ground about the size of a quarter every time I use the vehicle and then turn it off.
