In this video, you'll learn a super simple technique to determine if a molecule is polar or nonpolar. It is very easy. We first start by discussing what polar and nonpolar means. Then we go through the technique which involves a checklist of two criteria. Lastly we go through 6 examples that are all different to reinforce the technique. By the end, you'll know exactly to easily determine if a molecule is polar or nonpolar.

4.5/5 Understanding , What I learned: very hard for molecule to be nonpolar, non polar if the molecular shape around central atom has no lone pairs or if it does its either square planer or linear, 2 all atoms around the central atom are the same.

This video is so so helpful!! Thank you for simplifying this concept! I have a question. What about when you have c2h2f2? Because that can be drawn as a cis or trans. And we learned that the cis is polar but the trans is non polar. Do you mind explaining that example!

Hi may i ask u a question ? Is SBr2 is a non polar or polar?
@nathanz5213
@nathanz5213 3 года назад
I think SBr2 is polar. Sulfur has 2 lone pairs with 2 Bromine atoms on the side. Even though SBr2 matches with the rule that all atoms are the same, it does not fit the lone pair rule.

Are there any exceptions to this rule besides the hydrocarbons? For example a molecule with several central atoms where it is nonpolar.
@johnsirois1825

Yes, this will only work with one central atom. More complex molecules will require an actual understanding of dipole formation and vector additions.
