Dan & Rachel, this channel has helped me immensely fix and maintain a Ford 8N a friend gifted me. I've been purchasing parts from your site. Thank you very much for this valuable content.

Rachel. I just bought a 47 ford 2n. Ran great. Mowed a field. Then died. Going to figure out the issue tomorrow. I noticed it was hooked up negative ground. I switched it but could that have hurt something?
at 1:09, you say to check "here" on the distrubutor for power... What exactly is it you are testing there? I have an old 8N (front distributor). I have power coming out of the top of the coil, per tester, but no power getting to the sparkplugs, per inline tester. I just replaced the points, and the light test shows they are opening and closing. Is the next step to replace the spark plug wires? They are in a metal tube/thingie.
did you figure out what to do? im not getting any spark either. coil is good but no spark. e mail me if you like its farmerdobson1234@gmail.com my name is jeff thanks
Rachel .. this is totally off the subject from this video .. BUT .. do you recommend an additive for gas? (I would like to know also about 2 cycle engines - especially chainsaws - do you have an additive that keeps the gas clean .. etc? Also, I have several 6 volt tractors .. that start GREAT and run great too .. ... is there an advantage to converting to 12 volt relative to power? [better spark-etc with 12 volt?] Thanks .. Gary
My 601 recently sputtered out and died and all it does is turn over and not fire up. I tested the spark and it has 3 really weak sparks and 1 won’t even light up the tester. The plugs/wires/cap/coil/starter solenoid/rotor are all new so I’m not sure where to even look to see why it won’t fire up anymore
yes it is i didn't catch at first, but she does mention early in the lesson. i cant get any spark in mine, but the light does flicker..barely. (using a 12v tester like she did).
Im not getting spark. I charged the battery backwards. I for sure thought the starter wouldn't work but its cranks great. Is it possible I fried the distributor instead? The battery needed charged after I ran it at low Idol ,it wouldn't start back up afterwards, the issue might not be the charge mistake. What are your thoughts? Thanks
good afternoon I have a question I have a problem hopefully you can help me I have a Ford tractor 8N four cylinder I believe today when I was trying to cut my yard the hydraulic will stay engaged up and when I put the liver down it will stay up will could be my problem can you help thanks
Sounds the valve in the bottom of your tractor is stuck. The valve is located in the body of the pump. Fix it by draining the transmission oil, refilling with three gallons of diesel and starting the tractor up for a minute or two. Turn the tractor off and drain all of the diesel. Refill with new hydraulic oil. This process will clean the reservoir and make your valve operate smoothly again. This is an easy and affordable trick that has worked for us many times.
It sounds like the wires on your solenoid are switched up. (Note Ford 8N tractors were made in 1948-1952, I'm guessing you made a simple type-o on the year or model, regardless, the issue you're explaining is usually the solenoid wires installed on the wrong side of the solenoid--the one that feeds the dash is likely on the wrong side).
Dan Gingell and Rachel Gingell sorry I didn’t get back to you yes it was the wires runs fine, it’s my stepson the person he got it from said it was a 8m 1967 model was just going. Y what they said
Anyone... Ford 8N Side Mount Distributor (Using exact tools as depicted in this video) I have 12v to coil... 12v from coil to distributor... Light flashes indicating that points are opening and closing... No spark at all at spark plug.
If you could just movie the camera back a few more feet so it's even harder to see what your talking about. "Put your tester here" Where? Can't see from 20 feet away!
