How To Diagnose and Repair your Honda TRX450ER Starting Clutch and Gears

Just wanna make sure i have the same issue, but the gear in the back spins a little then the front one spins after a little while? so if i can get some one to tig weld it it should work correct?!

Did you have to remove the clutch basket to remove the starter clutch or did you leave all that intact

Would you happen to know if this is a common problem on the rubicon 500 quad . My starter works but it sounds like it is just spinning and not making contact

I need a response ASAP! Could this happen on a kick start? 2ndly did it make somewhat of a grinding noise when you would ride it before it went? I need this answer like yesterday, it determines whether i get this 450 or not.

I have a 1990 Honda fourtrax 300fw and when I try to electric start it sounds like it's just spinning and I took the little cover off to look at the teeth on the gears and none were stripped out and when I try to kick start it it dosnt seem to catch so I have no way to start my bike and I just put a good amount of money in to a 2"lift and 26"tires so any oppions on what it might be could be very helpful thanks

are you still running the same welded reduction gear?

What is the nut size to get the clutch basket off. Is it metric or American. That held me up from finishing the repair this weekend. 30mm perhaps? Or 1 1/8” socket?

This sounds exactly like what is happening with my 2005 450X. It was working just fine prior to sending it to the shop to have the top end re-done. $1,100 later I get it back and the battery was dead (shop sold me a new one!). I rode it once (had to kick start it). When I finally got a replacement battery I noticed the starter wasn't engaging the motor. Could the shop have done this (cranked to too much) or could it be coincidental?

Did good on video so everything in the video looks good on mine but I've had to bump start mine all last summer it fires right up and runs great.so starter turns it over but it will not start by pressing button it turns over and over til it kills The battery any ideas? Thanks

i had a problem with my 08 trx450re it made a load noise upon trying to start it. it ran for split second then died then it makes a louder noise wile cranking the motor over but it will not sart if you have any insight on this let me know thanks

So my starter gear wont move ether way and its a brand new gear so im just woundering if the clutch basket is just to tight against it would that couse my problem?

Explained very well . Before you did the repair would it just spin and not give you any turn over when you hit the button ?

I took out the reduction gear and it slips as yours. I question why the design has a smooth axle if the gears are supposed to be locked together? Why not have a spline connection or a key slot? Is it a safety design in case of an engine kickback to save the motor case or planned obsolescence?

I have the same bike and I started mine with the case open and that small gear that was wrong with your bike, mine literally popped out, could that be the caused it wasn’t starting and making the loud noise like if it was the starting gear ?

Les I believe that the design was to try and keep for the case breaking. just my opinion

Anyone know why an 08 450er that is rebuilt completely would start and run but idle high but all of the sudden in the break in period it just stops running and won't start at all?

Hay Quick question . I have a 2007 Honda trx450r that won't start of the electric starter but I can bomb start it . Runs fine once started . The starter turns over the engine fine lots of back pressure out of the muffler so I know the starter is fine .. thoughts ?

hey I am doing the same thing to my bike and the gears you had welded are both spinning, but my mechanic buddy said that its the starter clutch. any idea if hes correct or not

yes they should be pressed back together, then tig welded

Would yours turn over before the repair? My bike will turn over but just not fire.

Much appreciated the lesson,,, but do you have a more detailed video of start to finish? We've never removed a clutch, but no biggie to us,,, after reading the manual,, it seems like additional tools are needed. Can't find any videos from start to finish.

I Weiss that dame part and it sirves great . Hay a trip out this weekend and after riding for a day it stopped wanting to turn over . Sounds like it just spins and it's not catching I took off the cover and went to turn it on and my weld is still holding everything looks to be spinning like it should . Anyone have any idea what it might be?

Sometimes my starter will kick and sometimes it wont and it will. I already bought a new starter clutch so i hope i didnt waste my money. When the starter actually does kick and the motor tries to start, it sounds like it wants to start but it just doesnt have enough juice. I charged the battery and it still sounds like it doesnt have enough juice. This is starting to make me think that the starter clutch has some wear, but the carb might need cleaned or jetted because it wont idle. Help?

Hi ! my TRX 450 ES won't start. When I hit the start button I hear what I think maybe the solenoid click in the battery compartment, but that's all that happens. If I pull the manual pull start a couple of times to turn the motor over, if I'm lucky the starter will than start the engine like normal, But it's getting worse now. Any ideas what could be wrong? Morning I just bought an 06 TRX450r, it’s takes me a long time to start it, I ride it for 10 20 mins, if I turn it off it will take me another 5 mins to start it again, any ideas would be appreciate it,

Apparently its designed to fail, so welding it would be a bad idea as if the clutch fails it will spin up all the start assembly

I ended up replacing my one way starter gear and now bike won't start. U have any clue why this is happening. Ran before I replace it

Hello i have a 2007 Honda TRX450ER and when i hit my starter button all i her are spinning gears and no start sometimes it will start when its hot but other than that i had to push start it to get it home... i have watched many videos and binged and googled everything would you guys know how to deal with this i already took it to my local atv shop and paid 600 to get it running and then it happened again?! can i buy a conversion kit for kick start or have a way to fix this please any ideas?

The inner part of my starter clutch is seized on the crank.

At the end of this video, you have your finger on a gear that the teeth are stripped off of mine by the starter. You know what its called?

Your last clutch fiber should be offset. It should be like the rest. It should be in those other teeth for some reason.
