Thanks-I replaced the speed sensor on mine a short time ago (99 Dakota). Mine had a couple very minor differences-mine had the shield and there was only 1 13mm bolt, not a 13mm and 14mm nut. But it was nice to be able to see it done before doing it-it made it a quick, simple job.

I have a 1998 Durango 5.2L . Got a Dorman ABS Sensor at Walmart.com Part Number 970-024 . you will need a13mm socket and a 14mm Deep Socket, a flat head screwdriver and a medium size channel lock. Everything you see in this video is correct! Take your time and you can do this! Hardest part is having to pry that sensor out. I did exactly like this guy did to get it out. After my wife prayed over the truck I started it and the ABS light and brake light did not turn on. AMENTime to go get an inspection sticker now!!Remember to take your time and don't get frustrated it will come out using tender loving car. GOOD LUCK!

Jim Butler ,well my sensor is flush with the top of diff. axle, will not come out, Think I can tap it in? Have rear cover off, and drained. But don't want scrap in rear axle. So what to do?????

Great video! I haven't tried the fix yet, but this was exactly what I was looking for. I'm loving that you showed the diagnostic for the sensor so that I can evaluate it without having to pull it out. I'd throw a fit if I took it to the repair place and had to pay a couple hundred, and then it just turned out to be this sensor. Thanks!

If the sensors check out OK , AND if it's a diesel, look at the spare 15A fuse in the engine fuse box (position 37). That fuse powers the ABS module in a Cummins optioned truck! If it's blown or removed, the ABS mod has no 12V.

Im assuming the front sensors have the same way to check for resistance? I have an intermittent light problem and have already swapped out the rear sensor. My speedo never had problems. I had the codes read and it said front right speed sensor was at fault. I checked the connector and it was full of water so I cleaned it out and the ABS / Brake light is coming on again from time to time. I'll do the resistance check on it in a bit and keep you updated.

2007 Dodge 3500, I tried to test the sensor the same way as shown with an ohmmeter on 3 different new sensors from 3 different stores and there was no reading on the meter. The sensor for the 2007 dodge 3500, Dorman 970-280 looks close to the one you replaced.

I just checked mine out, and it definitely is just a wiring issue by the connector. I didn't see any breaks in wiring so I assume it is in the connector itself. I figure it is just cheaper to replace the whole thing , as the brand of sensor I am getting comes with a short wire and I can just splice it into the old wiring. After the speedo goes out and ABS lights come on, I can just wiggle the wiring and it starts working again.. Thanks for the video, though, jimthecarguy, as I was not able to find where the connector disconnected from sensor and the video showed me.

Would this sensor cause my 2000 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 to not shift out of first gear until around 3,500 rpm? Also my speedometer will stay at 0 mph until i reach 30 mph. My brake light is on also, but my main problem is the shifting out of 1st great, after that it's fine.

Hyundai accent 2003: got a sensor problem rr.Light on dashboard, and diagnostic said the rr abs sensor was bad. I dismantled plastic in the trunk n seats to get wires out (was attached to the door plastic) and got a multimeter, but I cant seem to get a clear reading from the connection leading to the abs control unit by testing the resitance on the 2 plug pins. I was wondering if its possible to test, just by putting leads on the plug and how the resistance should pop up, or if I am doing something wrong. I do get a momentarily reading every time I reconnect to the plug - between 500-2000 ohms , but then it quickly goes back to 1. again. The Abs sensor plug has a more irradicate reading, but is close to the same values, and none of them stay at the same ohm level when tested like your in the video. Could use some help on this one.. I have a 1998 5.9L Jeep Grand Cherokee. I know this is on the rear diff; but, I was wondering if there's a sensor on the front diff? My front diff is shot and I get an intermittent ABS Light. I was wondering if the light might correlated to the diff? I'll post some videos later on; so, you can see. I should've looked; while, the vehicle was up on jacks. But definitely if there is one, I will measure resistances on the different sensors.

I just changed that exact same sensor seemingly for no reason, the (abs) light is still on and most importantly my speedometer still doesn't work which is a very bad thing for me. Yes it was a New sensor that I put in, but thank you for making the video

Does the speedometer always not function properly when the ABS sensor is bad? Obviously because I'm watching this my ABS/BREAK light is on but the speedometer is working properly. Haven't put a scanner on yet so I was curious.

I have a 98 dodge ram van 1500. The abs light is on, no gauges work. Occasionally the light would go off and the gauges would work again. Had it in the shop for diagnostics and they couldn't find anything wrong. Said they couldn't communicate with the abs. Any ideas? I don't want to pay money for repairs that may not be the problem. Okay video with the exception of you can't see the readings on the meter or the meter settings in your video. both are out of focus but on the good sensor you are not showing the screen of the muti meter. was the ohms set to 200 and what were the readings? I think my new sensor is bad.

could this also go for a dodge ram Laramie 1500. my ABS light brake light engine light all came on at the same time and my speedometer stopped working all the same time my a/c goes out when u hit the brakes just right. when we hook it up to the diagnosis it comes up 72 ROM comes up, but nothing else it wont let us reset and or reprogram. even the direction thing will tell u that ur going north whe. ur really going south. do u have any suggestions if so u are more in welcome to email me ur thoughts thank u

Yeah I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota Club Cab Sport, RWD. The ABS light kicked on and my speedo stopped working. Would that conclude to the same issue?

Ok, too late came out in one piece at a time. Had about 5/16" of magnet showing, nope ,still didn't come out, Now flush with top of diff.housing. ok, now what(21 yr.old, "97 Dakota), with sensor now flush and stuck. Took off axle cover, behind ring gear, can't even see it. Think I can tap it in, hopefully find all the old parts????? Certainly can not get it out from the top? Any advice, on this??????

Probably got it by now but.... when you pull the diff cover you'll see a ring with teeth standing vertical to the circumference of the ring. The sensor is right above that. from the top use a socket or something with a small diameter than the hole and press down on what's left of the sensor. You should be able to find whatever falls out. Just find it before you drive the truck again.

My abs and brake light comes on randomly after doing a brake job. The speedo still works and the cruise still works just fine. I'm thinking maybe I messed up a sensor since I had to beat one of the rotors off. Any suggestions? It is driving me damn nuts with the stupid beep every time those lights come on.

I have a Dodge Ram 1500 and had figured it was the rear sensor and was more than willing to ignore it. My wife kept nagging about it even though she never drives the truck. Well, the concrete wasn't broiling hot yet today and I had my multimeter handy, so I decided to crawl under there to check it out. Turns out that it was showing around 1.8 ohms, just like this video shows for *good* sensor, so I guess it's not that particular sensor. I guess it could be an intermittent open in the wire between the rear differential and the engine compartment *or something else*. :(

My abs light and light come on every time I reach 40 mph. My speedometer works fine. Once I cut the car off and start it back the lights are off but when come back on when I reach 40 mph again. Could this be the same sensor you replaced in this video?

First off thanks for taking the time to reply!! And I did the on off scan if that's what you are referring too and it only has an evap code which has been on there since I bought it. If I remember correctly it's p 0442.

It does sound like the same problem.If you can put the truck on a diagnostic scanner with a data stream and drive the truck to see what the abs sensor is reading.If your not able to do that follow my directions on the video to check the sensor.Keep me posted

hey man i need some help, i bought a 02 durango 4.7 , the car drives great an the breaks were all replaced right before i got it, the breaks work Great but the other day i had to SLAM on my breaks an almost crashed because my truck skid about 7ft, i had to swerve off to the side of the freeway, i wanted to know if i have a bad abs system or what? i have no abs or break light on.. please help

I have a 99 dodge 1500 I just replaced my sensor and for some reason it's not registering and I when and bought a second new one and still not wanting to work how/ where would I check the wires to see if it's the wires?.

I had to rebuild the 4 ft wiring harness leading to the sensor. The original harness had multiple breaks. I used 16 gauge silicone, a new pigtail and braided wire covering. You can measure the resistance in the circuit across pins 13 and 14 at the ABS module located in the center of the dash. It should measure between 1 and 2.5 K ohms with a good sensor, or you can bend a paper clip and jumper across the sensor connector which bypasses the sensor and you should get less than one ohm. You have to remove the lower cover panel under the driver's side of the dash to get to the ABS module.

You are technically not incorrect... although you aren't looking for an exact reading. You are checking to see if the unit is completely shorted or open to see if the sensor has catastrophically failed. If the sensor was slightly out of spec I would imagine your speedometer and cruise control would still work but may not be accurate and abs / brake warning lights would not stay on.

I'll be using your guidance combined with my cherished shade-tree automotive ability to do this R&R on my wife's 1998 Durango. Hey Jim I have a 98 ram that has an intermittent abs and brake light issue.I had the rear sensor replaced due to the code at a local mechanic due to having shoulder surgery and I couldn't due the work myself.The light still comes on but only when I apply lite pressure to the pedal.I have no idea any suggestions?Thanks.

I have a 1999 Dodge Durango with the same sensor set-up. I just purchased the vehicle and the previous owner said the ABS & brake lights were on due to the rear wheel sensor. I purchased & replaced the sensor. I have an OBD-II, but not an ABS tester. Upon start-up, the ABS light went out, but the brake light is still on. Does this need to be cleared by a tester or can I manually clear it out to see if the problem is fixed?

+jimthecarguy Thanks for the reply Jim! I checked the brake fluid, its fine. Messed with the emergency brake, its fine. Drove it for about 10 miles today, and the brakes feel great. Light still on. So, sensor changed, other "simple" issues checked, ABS light went out...brake light still on. I bought it Friday and want to put it through inspection, but really wanted the brake light out before running it through.

Sorry to ask again but on the side of the master cylinder is there a plug for the brake fluid level?Also is the fluid up to the full mark ?

+jimthecarguy - there is no plug directly into the master cylinder, only lines, but just next to it, where the lines run, there is an electrical plug. Does that make sense? Yes, the fluid is to the full mark.

My 02 dodge cargo van has the abs and brake light on all the time(my speedometer works) I get 1.81 resistance on sensor.wiring is good. Fluid is good.Brake pads are new.Brakes fine.Fuses are good.no leaks around calipers. My scanner can't read its abs module. Is there anything else I can test? I'm just out of ideas. 😡 Any suggestions anyone?? I'm realky fustrated with this thing.

No one is answering this question, I have the same problem except it's about 65 to 70 at cruse before the lights come on and the speedo keeps working. Back to normal when key is truned off, then starts all over again. I did buy a sensor, so I guess I'll put it in and if this fixes the problem I'll post my findings for you guys.....

For those who have a dodge ram is the same procedure with rear sensor and with the front! Be careful with the rear sensor because mine was too tight and I dont understand why it was 0 ohm. And I put a new it works 5 minutes and after the same abs and park light came again. In fact the sensor was broken cause of the ring of the dana 70 in turning, it has broken my new sensor ! So be careful with it!

And before I forget if you want to test too all abs sensors without to go under the ram truck, you can test by the abs module harness! You have 2 harness block , one big on the left and one little with 4 wires. This 4 wires are the front wheel speed sensors , you test with ohmeter! And on the big harness block, the last 2 wires on rhe right ( view face) are the rear wheel speed sensor! Its not difficult just unplug and put ohmeter to test them! I ve tested them and it s more easy than you go under the truck. Its evident the wires under the truck must be clean!

jimthecarguy I just finished the replacement. took about half an hour and I didn't even need to jack up the truck. It turns out the sensor was the problem and everything is good as new! Thanks a lot for the help!

Ashroyer86 if she means the abs pump those are $150 on eBay but there is nothing other than the speed sensor in the rear . The pump is for all four wheels abs and located by the battery.

If it said right front open check the wiring there.Don!t worry about the rear now.was the light on before the tow?

Yes check all the sensors to make sure the tow hooks did not damage the wires.If they all look good you will need to scan the truck for codes.Keep me posted.

Check the harness leading to the sensor. It probably got damaged when they towed the vehicle. I just finished rebuilding my rear wiring harness to fix my problem.

Then I'm sure it was damaged by the tow truck.check the sensor with an ohm meter and check the wiring very carefully
