How to Dial In a Modern Metal Tone. First start with your signature guitar with your signature pickups and plug it into you signature amp and then use your signature overdrive pedal in front of the amp to get the tone you want.
@@Heath-vz7lc Of course it is. When you’re sponsored you are sort of obligated to sell the gear. Also if you spent a ton of time designing gear then you would damn well advertise it and only use that gear because it does exactly what you want. This video isn’t about the gear. It’s about dialing tones in. The gear is just what he uses. But he shows how to dial tones in which is the actual point of the video. Do you want him to show you how to do it on a dual rectifier, a Marshall or a line 6 spider with a metal zone? Nobody has time for that.
@@bdaquatics7584 naw man. I mean, the gear is awesome and it’ll get you there easier but you can get these tones fairly easy in terms of setting up the gear.... but a lot of misha’s tone is his playing style which is obviously impossible to replicate exactly. But in terms of the gear a decent guitar with good passive medium output pickups paired with some kind of tube screamer style overdrive pedal (you will want a noise gate somewhere in there) and a peavey 5150 or 6505... boom. You’re golden. If you use software emulation just find the equivalent to this gear and fiddle with the settings. Avoid too much gain though. Also make sure you get a really good IR because that is where a lot of software amp emulations kind of falter. You gotta remember. Misha didn’t have this sick gear his whole life. He grew into it and any serious guitar player will do the same. The player dictates the sound. The gear are the tools that help you get there. A bad guitar player can make the best gear sound like ass. But a good guitar player can make anything sound good.
In a way, yeah. But these methods work with most amps, OD pedals, and guitars. It's not as if it's impossible to achieve tight, percussive and bright-but-not-ice-pickish metal tones without these pieces of gear. People have been doing it for years. He just used what he was part of developing, and why not? They're exactly what he had in his mind, and what he can best articulate this points with. Should Paul Gilbert also not teach with his signature guitars?
Im totally cool with it as long as he doesnt go full Chapman and say "obviously, I'm the owner of Horizon Devices and this is my signature amp with Peavey" every single time he mentions the gear at all. "Also, these are my signature Bareknuckle Pickups, I am a Bareknuckle artist, and I'm also the owner of Horizon Devices go check out Horizon Devices" that shit gets annoying.
J Har come on man....this is obviously a commercial masked as an educational video. If sweetwater sells any of these items he probably gets a percentage
about 7k in USA with around 3,5k cash a month... In my countrie, would be 42k brazilian reais, and the average salary is 1000 reais per month. would take 4 years to buy everything
How to dial in a siiiick metal tone: have a $4000 guitar, a $3000 amp, $1000 worth of pedals, ran into the best recording equipment mixed by a professional. Easy.
Hes not going to come and promote brands he's not affiliated with, no one with any good business sense would do that, if you owned a carpentry company you wouldn't drive around with the competition advertisement all over you vehicles would you? He shared good information that works for him and his gear got a little plug too, what's the problem?
Huh? Musicians demo non-sponsored gear all the time. If it’s presented as an instructional video, then yes, he should promote whatever works for him, regardless of brand. Part of what brought viewers to this page is the ethos of his name and respect for his sound. If he’s purposeful omitting key components or gear for the sake of advertisement, criticism is justified. Nothing wrong with plugging your products in an advertisement, but trying to present it as genuine instruction is dishonest.
The last thing I want to see is an artist being distracted from explaining their technique and tools because they're using tools they don't normally work with. In that scenario, we would have likely heard, "This really doesn't achieve the gating, mids, attack, low end, or saturation I'm looking for, but if I had my pick ups, amp, and booster, you'd see what I'm unfortunately unable to convey with this limited equipment." Which is more instructional? The assumption is that you can provide the free lesson he gave with some other, unspecified equipment. Because he didn't use this unspecified equipment, his character is now being called into question because he used what he uses. This is why I tell people to keep their kids as far away as possible from public and most private schools, because very basic standards of critical thinking are nonexistent in the vast majority of these environments.
I think as people get better at their instrument they inherently lower their gain. Early on gain can help cover up mistakes, and make you feel a little more confident in playing. I still you use a little extra gain live to help out with the small stuff so I don't feel like I need to not move much to sound good. Just as it covers up mistakes though, it covers up articulation as well. Picking dynamics being the main thing it destroys. You lose the audible difference between soft and hard pick attacks, which is especially annoying when tracking for a record.
Dear Sweetwater, You guys have been KILLING it recently in the content game. I just wanted y'all to know that. Keep it up! Sincerely, A guy who watches gear videos a lot.
Why is everyone complaining about the fact that he is using his own signature gear? He is only demonstrating the main concept of a modern metal tone. I've used his tips a lot and I'm playing through a Laney IRT60h head and a Peavey Valveking 412, with a simple OD in front of it (MXR Custom Shop GT-OD), it's not the actual gear his demonstrating (even though this is probably a clever way to promote his signature stuff as well) it's rather what you do with what you've got. And yeah, not every piece of gear will give you a magnificent modern metal tone, but use his tips with the gear you've got and if it just doesn't work for you, look for som nice, used, gear online that you think will be a step up from what you've got! Rock on! 🥀
Most people's experience with metal tone is with their distortion pedal on their tiny 1X8 practice amp trying to get a 4X12 solid state head sound. So, yea, the biggest thing is the Head, your Pickups, and type of Speakers. Outside of that is just cleaning your signal up.
A lot of you folks missed the point of this video. Yes, he’s using REALLY high end gear, but these principles apply amps and pedals in general. Example: how many of you have 5150/ 6505? Shoot, you might even be using a Boss Katana or an Amp sim. I use Ignite Amps Emissary. Tube, solid state, sims, these principles apply. As far as using an OD, go get a used TS-9 or Maxon 808.
There are so many Metal sub genres TODAY that I am puzzled when they say "Modern". Prog Metal/ Tech/ Thrash... OK yeah you want a tight low end for those. But if you're playing Black Metal, Doom, Sludge or Power, those sub genres have modernized too and they all need different frequencies/settings than what Prog Metal uses.
The fun is, several years later, they still call it modern. It could also be called arrogant metal or poser metal as far as I care. Just write songs and stop worrying about genres or gear. There is a MAJOR distraction going on in the industry, people only worry about sounding the same as your favorite band with a RU-vid channel and are completely occupied by the thought of having the exact same gear. All that while you should practice and try to get inspired to write a decent song. And a bunch of riffs with weird sounds isn’t a song btw.
I hate to be a zoomer djent fanboy BUT... while Misha is getting a tone with his signature guitar into his signature pedal into his signature amp and these are expensive products, a nearly identical tone is reachable using more standard versions of the gear. The Invective is just a 5150/6505 with some extra features and the Precision Drive is a TS-808 with a low end control, gate, and more volume on tap. A used 6505 combo will run you MAYBE $500-600, coupled with a boss ns-2 and ts9 running you an extra $200ish. Almost any modern guitar with hotter humbucker pickups (maybe don't use a Les Paul, I personally haven't had great luck using them for djent tones) will do the trick, like an entry level Ibanez RG.
the reason misha lower a bit of mids its because his Juggernaut already give him plenty of midrange, same goes with his speakers + Precision pedal. there no reason for misha need lots of mids unless he cannot heard himself in live performance and put more to it. (doubt it) he already have lots of it. he's Precision pedal is pretty awesome love how make it tight more to it . good video
Something I've noticed to be a general rule of thumb is that Peavy amps tent to already have a fairly pronounced mid range so you can afford to dial them back more than you would on, for example, a dual rectifier.
Misha Mansoor btw don't listen to the haters on this video, this video can be really helpful for beginners even without the precision drive as this can be achieved with any tube screamer (maybe not as good though ;D)
I didn't take offense to this video in the sense that he is using all of his endorsed gear and you have to spend thousands of dollars to get this tone...which simply isn't the case. I think what he is trying to illustrate is how he dials in his tone with the amp he uses. You can get pretty much identical results and don't have to spend that amount of money. A used 5150/6505 in great condition is between $600 - $700 and then honestly use any decent guitar with articulate pickups. The crunch and lead channels on his sig amp are based off the block letter 5150 anyway. Most amps have (obviously) bass/mids/treble controls and then separate adjustments for presence & resonance so you could apply what he is trying to show you hear with most high gain amps + an OD & noise gate. Now if you expect to get this sort of tone from a Line 6 solid state amp well then it ain't gonna happen. Gotta spend some money at some point for a decent rig but again there are affordable options unless you're just a broke-ass, in which case stop your bitchin' & go get a job lol.
Not to mention basically all this is his signature gear *cough* sweetwater *cough*, he set sail for the precision drive, and he pretty much made a better bulb od, with a sweet noise gate. I am a fan.
Everybody whining about the price of the gear is totally missing the point of the video. You can dial in this tone on freaking amplitube if you want. It's all good information.
Kinda hard to sound bad with an amp like that though, I mean it was designed for music like this. Misha himself was one of the people who helped create it.
these videos are useful, but dont you think everyone is just using the same gear for a modern metal sound. Probably a 6505/5150 with a cab with v30s with a tubescreamer or precision drive. yeah its sounds good but getting a bit stale now.
Will Maskell Music recently tried out the new Mercuriall plug-in, which is an incredibly well made Tri Axis sim with a stereo chorus (you can use it with no chorus just to widen your sound) , a delay, a reverb and a gate. You can pretty much have any tone you want on it.
It's 2022. I got myself a PRS SVN SE Mark Holcomb signature, Archetype Nolly by Neural DSP and I'm able to get really sick tones like this one with very little effort. I know I sound like an ad, but the fun I have playing along to Periphery songs and other metal bands, feeling like I sound like these guys... it's just the best and you don't have to break your bank. If you're into production, you can get yourself the Djin Bass and GGD plugins to program in drums and bass and there you go... full band in a box and it sounds sick.
I just ordered the Precision Drive from Sweetwater. I don't think I have ever been this excited for a pedal to arrive. I'm going to be using it with my EVH 5150 iii 50w.
Sorry if I sound like a dumbass but I see lot of comments asking what Corey Taylor is thinking but can't get the joke, would someone mind to explain me where it came from please ?
@@pideuhweuh8459 some metal news websites seem to have an obsession with getting Corey Taylors thoughts on the subject so people joke about it. I think metal sucks might be the ones who seem to believe Corey is the be all end all voice on all topics.
"Hi I'm Misha here's how to do my tone" "First you need this sweet amp, then make it sound ok, then what you should do to make it better is use my Horizon Devices Precision Drive pedal, then to get even sweeter, go ahead and buy yourself my signature Jackson, then also maybe to make it perfect you should get these awesome Bareknuckle Juggernaut Pickups. Ok thanks for watching, Misha out."
And then there's how much presence you have and how to use compression and then an EQ pedal on top of all that. Sigh... I will never be completely satisfied with my tone.
How to dial in a metal tone. First have sig guitar and high end amp and pedal you helped design and alot of money. There you have it a great tone ANY.......ONE....... can get........
The thing I would like to know is, at what point do the modern metal become unmodern and just plain metal again? What's the new thing that will push it back a notch? And what would we call that, supermodern?
I got the pedal from the 2nd batch in the beginning. I'm running a Kiesel 8 into it, then into a Line 6 Helix and it's sounding amazing. It's no Axe FX but I can't afford that after the Kiesel lol.
Funny how he pointed out the added "weight" of the tone once he cranked up the low end a bit because I heard that too! It sounded really sonically dense. I'mma have to try that tape trick as well. I've only seen people use scrunchies and those velcro things. I first saw Periphery back in April of this year, and I'm finally getting to see Animals As Leaders live for the first time in a few months so here's to seeing them twice in the same year by accident! lol
Ok. How about with the cheapest gear available. So.. You get an Epiphone Special II and a Roland MicroCUBE... Wire the neck pickup in Parallel... Then close mic the hell out of it. BTW.... That's my busking unit and I think I'm well under $100 Cdn Including cables strings and upgraded tuners nut and a roller saddle. Neck does strat style neck/mid tones and bridge does mid heavy OD and in between is very strat bridge / mid tones... I think I won this round.
Are you kidding me? Misha makes the first high gain amp with a decent boost built-in (with dedicated drive and tone knobs instead of just volume) so we FINALLY don't need to use a TubeScreamer, but then proceeds to add a boost pedal in the chain? WHAT THE FUCK.
That head is Sick as fuck.. Ive had every head on the planet besides a Deizel and the 6505 plus is definitely the best straight plug in chord only and Chug away. I just got rid of my Jvm 410h to buy back my old modded 6505 Plus. That's speaks volumes to me..However I've never seen this head and since when did peavey ever have a 2k dollar head?? Back in the day peavey was all about pound per pound for the dollar..Times have changed i recon.."Chug on my friends "
Luckily I have this pedal, when I saw what a cool guy Misha was I had to try his gear. It’s amazing. Just FYI, don’t turn the noise gate all the way up, I find it can snip off the front attack, so dial it back a bit till everything is clear. I think this is for the guys that have more powerful pickups than me.
I can tell immediately that tone would sound horrible in a mix. By itself it may wow some people here but that tone is awful, especially after he added the precision drive in
I came here to learn something but I really didn't like the tone at all. I run an old Peavey Ultra Plus amp and two 6505 4 X 12 cabs. I run a ten band EQ pedal, A BBE pedal, and sometimes a Zak Wylde over drive turned way down. I played with the BBE and EQ one knob, or slide, and found a beautiful tone. It can be done with older stuff.
Was it just me, or was every tone in this video unbearably fizzy? I'm guessing it's just a mic placement issue, and not representative of the Invective's tone...
Galeus he's talking from the perspective of a live or studio setup, because this kind of tone sits really well when other instruments are added into the mix
It's the speaker of that cab. Sweetwater's other invective demo has the same fizz. I think it's natural and cool to me. Classic mark 1 5150/6505 has that fizz and low end which I prefer over the newer revisions. YMMV.
No that is defiinitely the invectives tone. You see, real amps stopped being made a long time ago. If you want good tone, you go back to when they used real parts and gave no consideration to mass produceability. This thing is going to sound like digital fizzy dogshit, because thats basically how this bands mixes sound anyways. To them it sounds hi-fi
If you want a metal tone don’t buy a marshell code 50 or the 100 😂 I just got one and tbh I heard everything abt marshell being great but I like pevey and Randall better 😂😂😂😂
Old school tones forever! I couldn't listen to children of Bodom just because of their guitar sound. Arch Enemy same, great lead tones but rhythms? Kreator is a great band but what is that tone. just like a high school band home studio record. and I want to know how many people dislike my comment also swear at me.
