Does it feel like you'll never be able to have a dialogue with those crazy extremists on the other side of the abortion debate (or any other issue)? In this video, incoming staff member and PhD candidate Rebecca Carlson explains how to make good conversations possible. Drawing from her experience teaching dialogue skills to philosophy students, Rebecca shares three lessons, highlighting both that bad dialogue isn't a problem limited to any one side of any debate and that we have the power to make conversations better.

People often mirror what they observe. We reflect our environment, and the environment is affected by us. Often, it's a slight nudge in some direction that sends a discussion in a bad direction. The person who nudged it triggers something in another person who then reflects that negative thing, and it bounces back and forth and blows up. But, if we avoid being triggered by things, and remain respectful, peaceful, etc., and stay focused on the topic at hand, and the goal of seeking the truth, it can often bring a person who is headed toward blowing up to calm down. Many of ERI's lessons in the first two units of their online course on dialoguing well (not looking up the name right now) have made many discussions go much better by preventing those bad nudges from amplifying, and by keeping us from making nudges that will get out of hand.

Thank you so much for this! I'm looking forward to trying this on the sidewalk in front of my local abortion clinic.

The usual topic addressed by ERI is abortion focused but I really do appreciate taking on the broader topic of more effective communication in general. I often think about how much better this world would be if our political 'leaders' could set an example for the rest of society by at least making the attempt to be better communicators. That is after all... their primary job. Thanks for this video, I think it's very helpful and very needed.

I agree. We do have a responsibility to communicate well. But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear them or be intimidated, but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. Yet do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that when you are accused, those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil. --- 1 Peter 3:14-17
