I've recently discovered I live on giant spring, it's one of them seep things. I noticed part of my yard seems to be "sinking", and there was a metal stake used to hold a fence down at the bottom of it in the depression. I wiggled it out and it was soaked, only about a foot down. I'm inspired.

Get yourself a trenching shovel. It is narrow and easier to work with when digging in our mountains here in Appalachia. This is how I dug my spring sans the rods. 750 feet from house, gravity fed. Best tasting water.

Hard work out for sure. I've got one on my property I have to develop. I did a couple of videos messing around with it. It's still flowing from the pipe I shove in the hole. Love the way it tastes!

man you can take two pieces of 14 gauge solid copper wire about 3ft long and bend six inches down on the end,to make a small seven shape and it works great,that's how we find underground water pipes.
@SteepintheWoods

Man I know that's hard work! Those rocks are content where they are and they're not too keen on switching locations! Took 'em years to get there after all. Hey man I heard some thick copper grounding wire makes great dousing rods, just bend 90's with enough on the end to make handles. Anyway, I'm no expert either.

Dowsing for water looks ridiculous and as a scientist I find it absurd. However, I've done it and it worked. I was helping a friend build his house. He handed me rods, told me to walk the acreage and to put a stick in the ground where they crossed. I laughed, drank a beer and did as he said. Half hour later I was done, certain this was nonsense. He walked over and pointed out where his dad and a neighbor had marked their spots, within a couple feet. We had two more people do it blind, same result. The well is still operating, 17 years later.
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods 3 года назад
Yep! I'm certainly no scientist.. But, I do know the human brain is extraordinarily gifted in the way of things it can ignore.. (the slight pressure of your socks pressing against your feet for instance) So it seems theoretically possible at something like dowsing rods can pick up on a person's ability to sense a thing he's been ignoring his whole life.. We certainly don't get much water out of our spring.. but it is constant and forever as such we have never had any problems in the way of running out of water.
@Wyrm1701
@Wyrm1701 3 месяца назад
The thing that's doing the sensing in dowsing is you, not the rods. All the rods are doing is making it obvious what you are sensing; that's why pretty much anything will do for rods.

The higher up you go the cleaner the water is because there's less opportunity for contaminants to get in it. And if you're lucky, it'll be high enough to get gravity fed water pressure without pumps.

I’ve been shoveling for 3 days about 14ft Good flow, seem to have found a decent amount big rocks, about 2ft from surface. Lots of gravel feel and tons of mud… I definitely look like a homestead wreck… hopefully I can find the head? But I’m not even sure what a head looks like, but seems like water is still further up hill..
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods Год назад
Dowsing rods may be an option to give you some idea where the head is. It's also possible to put your collection system below that point if you've already found some large rocks. As far as the structure of the spring you want to put that up against something solid like a large Rock so it doesn't collapse into your collection system over time.

Where I am at there is no spring. But we do develop groundwater. So, this summer will use my post auger to hand auger a hole to use as a well. Since the auger has a pipe shaft threaded onto a "t" connector for the handle, just need more threaded pipe and couplings to extend the shaft. And since we stopped using gas to heat with (switched to wood), those old gas lines (1 3/4" steel pipe) are perfect to use so all I need is some connectors. Sure cuts the cost. Will let you know how it goes for us.
