Direct seeding into cover crop stubble and roots can be a challenge. I am using the Double Disc Opening Shoe from /www.paperpot.co on my JP1 to seed into my no-till garden.

Good demo. I mulch with sourdough from a Michelin star restaurant, and wasn’t sure if Jang could cut it.

It slices! It dices! It makes julienne fries! It's the Veg-O-Matic garden version! Ron Popeil would be proud. This was great, Diego.

Spending the extra for a double disk opener was one of the best decisions I made a few years ago after getting Jang. I've found in my area where radish, oat, peas winter kill the disk opener works well in the residue the next spring if it's not to tall. I'm currently working on building a heavier duty no till planter for the bcs so that I can handle heavier residue due to the extra weight and the fact that the opener will be a heavier duty ag style one.

G'day Diego, First of all, congratulations on the wonderful body of content that you have created and curated. I know many people find it invaluable. Secondly I was researching animal/human powered no-till drills and this came up in the feed. On the later versions of the Keyline Super Plow's that we've built I've ran Acra-Plant double disc drills. Following Bruce Maynard's recommendation (inventor of 'No-Kill Cropping') the next set I run will be Ryan NT discs. What struck me about these Jang double discs were how the cutting angle was so much further forward than most 'AG' double discs (i.e. approx. 30° forward of the axle). I could see that this created more disturbance than would be the case than if this angle was directly below the axle as it is on the discs we run. I was curious if considered this angle and if anyone had made modifications to these units. Thanks for all and I hope you and your family are doing well mate. Sláinte! Darren

Great Video Gave me a great idea. I’m going to remove that ring on the front of the shoe, grind a knife edge on the front and a knife edge on either side of the shoe up to the crease. If it works I’ll do the other two shoes on my three position seeder.😊

I just bought a 2 row planter with double disk openers for $250. It was probably made about 1940 by International Harvester and has many plates and custom plates available.

that video got a little silly, but I am glad to see that I could potentially use a jang in my no till garden! Now someone needs to make a push seeder that works in 6 inches of heavy mulch

So this gets around the tilter and bed roller type setup and allowing for coarser surfaces? Nice! Edit: Wait, why does Johnny's say it's not intended for no till use? That seems exactly what it's for. Glad you mentioned in the end it does everything the normal one does plus more. That's kind of what I was wondering, why not just use this for all purposes? Cost. You answered it , thanks. You'll be glad to know I've been out there doing the work, I've been nice and thankful :-D

The roller isn't made for cutting through a deep mulch which is probably why they don't recommend it for no-till. Unless you had a lot of problems with your standard shoe, I wouldn't upgrade.

I need to hand seed into Ruth Stout (hay) beds, any ideas?
@billastell3753

The only thing you can do is rake the mulch back to find soil then hoe in a furrow to seed into. When the seeds begin to sprout you can push the mulch back around the seeds.

I think a sturdy jab planter. Got a cheaply made Chinese plastic one and don't recommend. A diy steel pipe design. Did you find a solution?

If only there were a cutting board under the roots in the field! 😂 I suspect that in the field it won't actually cut through much more than the other shoe, but will just also push them down or aside.

Cutting or not - noticeably less snagging.

@@DiegoFooter I believe that. It does seem like an upgrade, like going from moldboards to discs.

The cutting board backer is hard unlike soft garden soil. I would be seeding my garden not a cutting board.

Two side observations: 1. "Organic" butter is suspect as the word "organic" doesn't guarantee a healthy product. You want "pastured" dairy, i.e., from cows that ate ONLY grass. 2. Do you want someone to "cut" your butter with salt when you are paying by weight? No. Salt is very cheap. It's too tempting to increase profit by over adulteration. What is the correct amount? It varies with each person, so no one knows. You can always add salt for your taste, just as you can sweeten to taste, but you can't remove too much salt. Don't buy butter and pay for salt of dubious quality.

Not what I think of when I hear No Till. Minimal till.
@DiegoFooter
@DiegoFooter 4 года назад
No actual version of no-till doesn’t actually disturb the soil surface. No-till by agriculture definition means no actual tillage by a tillage device. Hand tools like this aren’t tillage devices.
@shanehughes3
@shanehughes3 2 года назад
@@DiegoFooter By that definition I could turn over an entire garden bed with a shovel (a hand tool) and call it "no-till." Actual no-till doesn't disturb the soil profile, but that doesn't mean it can't cut into topsoil-mechanically or not.
@nickhill1216
@nickhill1216 2 года назад
@@shanehughes3 Inverting the soil with a shovel is absolutely tillage. A double disc opener does not invert the soil hence it is no till. Minimum till means that you invert the soil in the furrow but leave the space between furrows undisturbed.
@shanehughes3
@shanehughes3 2 года назад
@@nickhill1216 that's exactly my point. But strip tilling like you describe is only one form of minimum tillage. It could also be something like rotational or mulch tillage.

Well lets see...your cut a few greens,rolled over a radish,ruined a piece of bread and smushed some butter and didnt show it working in the garden...pretty much a joke like your little toy that quote"plants small seeds in no till garden"unquote
