The MAJOR problem with auto-idle (which isn't mentioned here) is the fact that starting your engine is the single most damaging activity to your engine. Why would you save a little in gas to greatly decrease the longevity of your engine? Does not make sense.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 3 года назад
I'm not sure how much damage is actually being done by starting and stopping the engine. What you say was more true of older cars. According to the manufacturer, the starter and flywheel and any other engine parts that would normally be affected have been modified and they suggest it shouldn't be a worry. However, there is definitely a few things that don't make sense here. I question the methods used to determine how much fuel this system supposedly saves. I think the manufacturers have done some mathematical gymnastics to make it look like the cars have a greater MPG than what is achievable in the real world.

On a Ford f150 you can have this feature completely removed at the factory when you order one... greatest option I ever got rid of. The feature is useless and really serves no purpose
@superdave8248
@superdave8248 2 года назад
Here is what I found with my F150. I noticed about 50% of the time the auto/stop wouldn't engage. Turns out if you put a little stress on the engine (IE run the air conditioner about 1/2 to full blast) this is just enough to keep it from engaging. Now living in the Deep South, you run your AC about 3/4 of the year. But that other 1/4 yeah, you got to manually disengage the system.

Right. And the reminder was when your vehicle stalled at an intersection because you forgot to hit that button at the start. Personally, the batteries in my 2018 were both dying from old age so I replaced them. Now the alert light comes on and stays on permanently and I get a message that the Stop/Start mechanism is broken so will not work. So I no longer have to hit any buttons (except start engine). Don't know why - maybe a mechanic did me a favor by disconnecting the system so it never kicks in by surprise.

Yea they are a false economy. Also the AGM batteries you need for start/stop are also about 2x the price of a normal one and don't last as long. In many cars (like BMWs) they need "programming" in as well when you swap it. You can't simply do it yourself, it's a dealer job with costs attached.

The entire “stop/start” concept was to manipulate the mpg calculation. Try a test, first you fill up your gas tank at the start, remembering where you filled up, set your trip meter, drive your trip, return to the same gas station, same pump. Calculate your MPG, then compare it with your vehicles mpg estimate. Bet it’s different, why because I think it only uses miles and gas consumed when moving. The Auto/Stop/Start does damage to your turbocharger by, ”hot shut down” which fries the cooling system to the turbo. It doubles or triples the starter wear and tear, and the starter ring on the flywheel. And that’s just for basics, I bet there is more to come.

That's awesome! Glad to help. But like I said, it's not a perfect solution but it's probably the easiest and cheapest. I recently ordered a device that is supposed to remember how you left the button when you turned the car off so it'll still be that way when you turn it on again. I wouldn't say it's cheap($100) but it might be better than unplugging a wire from your sensitive electrical system and hoping for the best. After I install it and test it, I'll make another video for you.

There's an easier way without the warning light or unplugging everything, which will affect other features. Push the idle on/off button to off (light on). While holding it down, wedge a thin peice of plastic between that button and the console, so the button cannot go back up. It's jammed in the off mode. Been doing that for 3 years and works great!

I was going to try that today till I realized all my dash buttons including the turn on or off stop/start system button are all digital, so it is impossible to interfere with the electrical contact. To achieve the same goal, I would have to beg Chrysler to reprogram the OBC (on board computer), which they won't do without a $200 up front payment plus whatever they can cheat me out of while they have the vehicle secure inside. They even refused to honor a free reprogramming call back notice I rec'd from Chrysler head office. I think that's because Chrysler is now part of the Fiat family, which is trying to make a comeback in the US after a disastrous pull-out in the 1980s.

As a senior citizen I have a psychological twitch to my vehicle motor virtually stalling at a busy intersection with a long red traffic light. The anxiety must come from an archaic memory of when I was young and poor a stalled car meant calling a tow truck while surrounded by angry drivers. So I've been pushing the stop/start button every time I get into my 2018 Pacifica LX which is in itself annoying. Today I just followed your simple fix, which I suspect can be reversed just by putting the plug back in if/when I want to sell the vehicle without that tell-tale warning light on the dashboard. If RU-vid would allow me to push the thumbs up button a thousand times in gratitude for your video, I would do so! BTW I asked my Chrysler dealer how much to turn off the start/stop system and they said at least $200!!

Thank you for that amazing comment. I totally empathize with your psychological twitch. Lol! I'm sure no one ever mentions the most serious problem with this feature. When your vehicle does not restart after lifting your foot off the brake. My car has stopped several times at a stop light and would not restart. So I had to place it into park and turn off my engine, then restart it. My most scariest and most unacceptable occasion was when I was in RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC (stop. & go). My vehicle stopped, I quickly placed it into park and tried 3 times to restart before my vehicle restarted. I took it to the dealership and told them I do not want this feature and wanted it removed or disabled but was told it couldn't be disabled. I was told it was because my battery needed to be recharged. I am waiting for the first court case of injury or death for anything to change. My next vehicle will be based on not having this feature. It's important to note that this feature isn't primarily for you as the customer. This feature is so the car manufacturers can market their car as slightly more efficient than it really is. This bumps them up on the charts since technically it will burn slightly less in the "city driving" metric. Since all the manufacturers are so close in terms of fuel economy, this tiny bump causes them to gain a lot of places on the charts if they do it and your company doesn't, thus this annoying feature spread throughout the industry like wildfire. The manufacturer doesn't care about the longevity of the car as long as it makes it to the end of the warranty period. so i mean, if you dont care either, and also dont want AC/Heat while stopped, and dont care about a worn-out starter, and dont care about wearing out the bottom end faster, then by all means save a few bucks a month on fuel (potentially). But for people who want to keep their car for a long time and not treat it like getting a new phone every year or 2, then this feature is crap.

2:42 I'm in a 2019 GMC Terrain which does NOT have the button, so I can never turn Auto Stop off. And GMC made their Auto Stop hyper-aggressive, shutting off each moment the wheels stop. As you say, very annoying. I roll up to a 4-way stop with nobody there, if I follow the law and actually stop, the motor dies and I want to start immediately. What is really bad is when I'm in the middle of the road trying to make a left and having to pause for someone, then try to dart across before the next oncoming car while people are fast approaching me from behind, and viola no engine! That's DANGEROUS. Other car videos looked at this and said the fuel savings are minimal to begin with, car makers were forced into this as a last-ditch effort to keep gas engines viable in the face of the D party trying to strong-arm the public into EVs they dont want.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 6 месяцев назад
I certainly agree with your assessment about the system being dangerous when making a left turn. I said the exact same thing in the video. But your narrative on why the car manufacturers are doing this is slightly inaccurate. The manufacturers were given a mandate nearly 10 years ago for all cars to get at least 35 MPG. But it was easier for them to come up with this feature than to actually create cars that get better mileage. All this feature does is allow them to do a few mathematical tricks so they can legally say the car gets better mileage even though it does not in real world conditions. It has far less to do with the D party and a lot more to do with corporate greed. But to be fair to the automotive industry, this auto stop start feature is not the only idea they came up with. You might have noticed there are practically no more 8 cylinder engines and a lot more 4-6 cylinder engines with a turbo slapped on it. This is a fuel economical solution while still providing the power when you need it. Also, no one is forcing electric vehicles on anyone. This all started when Tesla made electric vehicles that were, for the first time beautiful, powerful and useful. They started out making them so expensive that the car itself represented elite status which of course made everybody want one. Tesla could not keep up with demand which meant there was plenty of space in the market for other manufacturers. The public likes electric cars for some reason and the old fashioned manufacturers must now make them in order to keep up. It's quite possible that in a few years there will be no more combustion engine vehicles. And when that happens, I don't want you blaming either political party. I's just the free market at work.
@kthmiller1494
@kthmiller1494 Месяц назад
You are so wrong. Tons of stories of manufacturers being stuck with EV inventory they were subsidized to produce. Tons of evidence people do not want EVs and the myriad of problems associated with them. If a person wants an EV fine...but to mass enforce them on the public, especially without the infrastructure to support is crazy. Notice that Biden and Newsom along with most Dems are full on-board with this crap, So it is political. *BTW, Tesla's are a fine car if that is what a person CHOOSES for their lifestyle.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 24 дня назад
To be fair, you're responding to a comment I wrote 5 months ago. When it comes to technology, 5 months is a long time. But I'm still not convinced that I'm wrong. I'm not sure what evidence you're referring to that indicates people don't want EVS. There is data showing a significant drop in sales of EVs but that's only because Tesla's sales are down and they hold such a large percentage of the market that it makes it look like the whole Market is down. But take another look. Every other EV company is skyrocketing. Besides, try not to think of it as a car, think of it as technology. There were plenty of people who didn't want smartphones when they came out. But over time smartphones not only dominate the market but they're pretty much the only phone anyone uses nowadays. In the early days of cell phones there was a significant lack of cell towers and other cellular infrastructure. Cell service was spotty and expensive, but as you can see that didn't stop the technology. Eventually, the infrastructure was built and onward we marched. I also don't understand what you mean when you suggest that EVs are being “mass enforced” onto the public. If EVs are somehow better for the environment (and I'm not saying they are) but if they are, then it would be the duty of the government to make them available to the public. Subsidizing companies to make them and incentivizing people to buy them is not mass enforcement. Finally, you said Tesla's were a “fine car”. I'm not exactly sure what prompted you to say that. I reread my comments and I didn't see where I said anything negative about Tesla's. In fact, I believe I called them “beautiful, powerful, and useful”. Please correct me if I'm wrong or maybe I misunderstood you. And thank you for your comment. I always enjoy intelligent conversations.

Thanks for the info! That tiny delay has almost killed my family several times! Our 2019 Volkswagon Tiguan was our first vehicle with this start-stop system. I discovered this death trap while trying to accelerate onto busy traffic lanes when seconds counted. My vehicle would bog down on me and basically stop and thrust forward, I had some close calls! My wife pulled up to the garage door with her foot on the brake and when she took her foot off the car lunged forward into the door. It took me a bit to figure out what was going on so I have been shutting the star-stop system for a while now with no other problems, it's just remembering to do it when I start the car. I wonder how many accidents this system has caused!

It's so aggravating that they do these things to cars without having a referendum on them before. Don't Do this! If you want to disable auto start/stop on your F150 (works on 2021-2023 models for sure, don't know about older models or the upcoming 2024 refresh, but I'm pretty sure its the same or similar.) Go into your infotainment system. Bring up Features. Bring up towing. Choose select default trailer. That's it. That's all you have to do. Don't buy any devices. Don't jumper the button. Don't disconnect the BMS from the negative lead on the battery. The truck will think a trailer is connected, but it won't cut off your backup camera, or give you any warning messages or anything like that. Plus you don't run any risk of voiding your warranty, or shorting your circuitry with some cheap Chinese "auto start eliminator," or by plugging in some trailer circuit test kit that isn't designed to be left in as you drive the truck every day leaving it exposed to the elements.

Otherwise, I 100% agree with you that if auto stop can be disabled via menu options already built into the car, then that would be the best option.

Yeh man, I read years ago (AAA magazine) that if you're not going to sit more than 3 minutes then you will waste more fuel restarting the engine than idling 3 minutes. Also you are drastically reducing the life of your starter (and other related components). The oil is so thin in small engines today that they get lubrication almost instantly, so I don't think there would be a problem as you would have in a big block 8 cylinder engine wearing because it takes longer to get oil to all the metal parts when you start the engine. Thanks for the info.

The way this man shows in his video is a Legit way and its the exact same for the New Nissan Frontiers - Make a disconnection at the battery but have a warning light flashing on the Speedo. Fortunately for us Frontier owners the warning light is Grey and just blends in with the Grey lights on the dash. His looks like a BIG ORANGE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STYLE - Sorry No way would i put up with that. BEST WAY TO DO IT without any annoying lights and everything functioning as normal is to bridge the 2 wires that the button is making a connection to when you push the button. That's what a button does, it makes 2 wires connect when you push it. Bridge the 2 wires and the switch will always be ON and A.S.S. OFF as if you pushed the button. You'll need the wiring schematic for your vehicle to know which 2 wires are having the connection made when the button is pushed. I did it with my 2023 Nissan Frontier. Took all of 7 minutes to do once i knew which 2 wires i was after. No cutting at all involved either. The Eliminators on Amazon work as well too and what they'll do is just remember your last selection of ON or OFF so the button is still usable. Whether adding an Eliminator or Jumper Wire it requires the same amount of work - pretty much pulling off a single panel. All Those A.S.S. Buttons are basically the same. I took it a step further and totally deleted the button, got a 2022 bezel for my 2023 which in '22 there wasn't an A.S.S. Feature at all and now i don't have the switch at all anymore and A.S.S is always OFF. Turns out all you have to do to disable A.S.S. is to jumper the 2 identified pins on the harness and the button isn't even needed. A Jumper wire is just shoving the ends of a 1'' wire into the back of the harness where the wires/pins go into. You'll need small 20-22 Gauge Wire so again, NO CUTTING REQUIRED. THERE ARE NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS. Here's an example in one of a couple videos i made. Check link in the description of the Video to Club Frontier for a better understanding. All these cars are pretty much the same. I'm leading the horse to water - will you drink or just complain and have a big ugly Warning Light on your Speedo/Gauge Cluster? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6wJPEQpBVH0.html&lc= Screw It - Here's the Club Frontier Link thats in the video description: www.clubfrontier.org/threads/auto-start-stop-a-s-s-deleted.387547/#post-4127720 Again, all of these cars A.S.S. Button setup is are pretty much identical. Watch Video and see how simple it is to add the jumper wire. I also have another video showing how to install the jumper from start to finish. Many cars will be similar but if you have a 2022+ Nissan Frontier you're in luck.

Thanks for that! I have a 2020 Pacifica S, like yours (minus the moon roof’s, what? ) I use mine for mail delivery. You should see this set up! Once done with my mail gig, I hope to vancamp with with this rig I will not be planning to write poetry, even though that does rhyme. Just traveling the states in the future. I thank you VERY much for sharing your videos. Much appreciated!

Since I knew zero about start stop,, your video was very helpful. I disconnected the wire on my Mom's jeep but I saw your video update now (not finished viewing). You're installing a device instead of a disconnect. Should I now be worried about having disconnected the wire from battery? Is there really something else connected to that wire? Thanks again!

@@projet2907 I drove around with that wire disconnected for a year without any noticeable issues. But you know what they say, some results may vary. Disconnecting that wire it's probably not the best way to deactivate start-stop but it's the cheapest and quickest. But if you can afford it, I highly recommend Auto Start Stop Eliminator. Thanks for the tip. I just got a 2019 Pacifica today 🎉 very low miles. That’s probably what made me think something wasn’t right with the car. I didn’t realize about that delay. What kind of gas mileage are you getting on yours? I only drove in the city today but it was only reading 16.5 mpg. I thought it would do a little better. I think I’m going to live this van once I get used to all the features.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 4 года назад
Congratulations on your new Pacifica! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. In the city, I get around 18 or 19 miles per gallon but a lot depends on how you drive and even the weather plays a factor. You'll get better fuel mileage when the weather cools off. But when I get out on the open road for hours at a time, I can get up to 30 miles per gallon. set your cruise control to 60 miles per hour and stay in the slow lane and just relax. On a cool day on relatively flat roads, you'll get over 500 miles per tank!
@SweetbearCoyote
@SweetbearCoyote 4 года назад
Vantastic Pacifica oh now I feel a lot better! 30 mpg sounds awesome. I plan on getting out and see the country. I love the Pacifica’s stow and go and the panoramic sunroof. Love how you have modified your van for road trips. Would you recommend your mattress?
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 4 года назад
@@SweetbearCoyote That depends on which mattress you mean. In my first video I had a 3-inch mattress which is only good for an overnighter or two but at least it was relatively inexpensive. If you plan to spend more than one night in your van, I would go with the six inch memory foam mattress. It's not cheap but it has been great! It's a very simple trifold design that stores easily. And the cover comes off so you can wash it. Here's a link to the exact one that I have. amzn.to/2CphvH6

Yes, many people have said that. I theorize that not all auto stop systems are the same. I can think of some ways it would be less annoying. Maybe yours is just a little easier to live with than mine.

Most cars in the UK are still manual/stick shift. The engine generally stops when you are stationary, clutch down and/or and select nuetral. It restarts the instant the clutch pedal is depressed and is running before you've even selected gear, so not really any noticeable delay. Some people like it, some don't. I'm not convinced it saves much unless you're at a red light for a few minutes, and agree it's just a way for manufacturers to manipulate emissions figures.
@JonathanCF0

@@bigglesace1626 I didn't know any manufacturers put this feature in manual vehicles. Thank you for this random bit of knowledge. I am in the US but I plan on my next car being a manual sports car, specifically a Subaru WRX STI.

Much simpler is to not to keep the brake pedal pushed to the floor when stopped. At least in my Renault Grand Scenic (automatic) that works. If i stop at a light i just push the brake to the floor and auto stop/start works. When i estimate the light will turn green soon i just lift my foot a little and the engine starts right away so it is running when i get green. If i stop at a stop sign i come to a full stop and just lift my foot a little. Car stays stopped (no motion) but the engine will not switch off. No need to get under the hood or seat or where ever and mess with electonics at all.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 2 года назад
Yes, you're not the first to suggest that. Sadly it doesn't work in every car. In the Chrysler Pacifica, for example, it's programmed to detect the moment the car comes to a complete stop and the engine will instantly shut off. But that's not really the point. People shouldn't have to drive like that. Some would argue that avoiding complete stops and being afraid to use your brake pedal could be dangerous. We should have the option to not have this system in the car.

I HATE STOP/START!!! Thanks for making this video. Most of the time I want the engine running while stopped. The only real savings is when you are waiting in the drive-thru line at a fast food joint or when you stop to talk with someone for a while. Otherwise, not much saved when you just stop at a light or stop sign. Also, I think that there is a dedicated extra battery for the stop/start system and this is charged from the alternator, so that when you think that the electrical system is turned off simply by disconnecting the main battery, there is still current in the system. Here is a link to how this is done on the Jeep Wrangler JL: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Nh2A5vpzZCA.html

Don't know what model car you have, but on my 2017 Toyota with this feature, it turns on when you start the car, but only ACTIVATES when you firmly press the brake while stopped. You can partially depress the brake pedal so you won't move, but not all the way and the system will not activate. Also, you can go through the setup menu and set it to off initially when you start the car. I don't recommend plugging in stuff to deactivate a feature. By the way, are you really annoyed with the slight delay? I find if you are paying attention to the lights and traffic, you can let your foot up on the pedal, the car will start before you are able to start moving. Then, not an issue. I guess jackrabbit starts are not prevented, but those defeat the purpose of the feature anyway.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 2 года назад
Mine is a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica and the feature activates whenever you come to a complete stop. It doesn't matter how subtle you are on the brake pedal. If the car stops, the engine shuts off, even if you are just inching into oncoming traffic to make your left turn off of a busy street. Also, there are no settings to adjust this feature in any way. Just an on off button that you would have to push every time you start the car. As far as anticipating the green light and letting my foot off the brake prematurely or trying to come to a stop without pushing the pedal all the way down, these are things a driver shouldn't have to worry about. I found that sometimes I would roll through stop signs or get too close to the car in front of me, anything to avoid coming to a complete stop. I actually didn't realize how bad it was until I finally got rid of the feature and felt so much relief that I can drive like normal again. My personal feeling is that the system is actually dangerous and will likely kill someone someday if it hasn't already. I don't think whatever fuel savings there may or may not be is worth someone's life.
