In this video, I show you how I separate a turbocharger. This is the stock JCW turbocharger from my 2009 Mini Cooper. It has over 100k km’s on it and it is indeed used. I will be splitting the turbocharger from the cartridge and showing you how to inspect it.

If you’re looking to refurbish your turbocharger, you can purchase a replacement cartridge, which will in essence make it perform like a brand new turbo. This is a cost effective way to get around from buying a new turbocharger from a dealer, especially a genuine replacement part. The cheapest price I found for a Genuine JCW turbo is over $1500. If you’re looking to have this done of you have questions about this process, feel free to email me and I will be happy to give you more information. While you’re replacing the cartridge, you can install a better one to improve the characteristics of the turbo, while also reducing turbo lag.
Don't forget to give it a like 👍 and follow 👣

You should also check your mounting surfaces are 100% level, as you would on an engine block. I've had a turbo that wouldnt stay mounted because of that. Of course check the exhaust manifold for level as well.

So what I used for the cold side is a similar silver paint that is only available at the local hardware store of mine. I linked the VHT silver which would look quite similar. If you are looking for a bare aluminum look that will not oxidize, you can sand the turbo / sandblast it, and then spray clear coat over top.

Man, so much misinformation. It's a disappointment because you seem to know more than the average person about turbochargers. But you should NEVER fill in with guessing what you don't know with 100% certainty. One piece of misinformation can corrupt thousands of unsuspecting people who don't know better. Same principle of how rumors start. Very good for TV personality though. Just wish there wasn't so much wrong info out there.

3:09 The wastegate doesnt only open when you let off throttle, if anything its closed when you let off the throttle... the wastegate opens during full boost, to make sure the car doesnt continue building boost and blow the internals up. You realise the wastegate lets exhaust gasses out before it reaches the wheel, so that it reduces the flow to the wheel, making less boost build.
@MichaelR200419
@MichaelR200419 7 месяцев назад
A wastegate is vacuum operated and opens when you let off the throttle unless the amount of boost overcomes the “spring” or actuator in which case yes it can also open under boost

You don't have to balance turbine wheel after dissasembly if you haven't bent any of fins e.t.c. and also if you are not changing the wheel… I have taken so many turbo's appart changed bearings e.t.c. the vibration will be ever so slight, that it will last you minimum of 5 years, when the bearing will be worn out of vibrations.

Painting the hot side was quite a good decision. For the cold side, chemistry speaking,you are not correct, Aluminum actually oxidizes so quickly in very thin layer in matter of tenths of second, so painting here is just aesthetics.

How did you know where to locate the front compressor housing, because unlike the turbine housing it didn't have a dowel pin to locate it and could be put back on anyway. Unless you used the waste gate actuator to locate it somewhat close?
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 6 лет назад
Using the wastegate is one way to do it, and that would work very well, but where the 4 bolts mount to the cold side, they left a mark in the steel. The exposed steel began to rust and make the steel look different. So you can bolt it back together like that, or you can even put a mark / scratch on the cartridge and cold side to properly align it.

I don't know about the ceramic coat of the turbo but heat is the enemy of all turbos so things like turbo jackets and ceramic coating don't really sit well with me even if they do keep the engine bay temp down because turbo cost alot of money.
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 6 лет назад
That is why the turbocharger is both oil and coolant fed. As long as you don't get the turbo red hot, and then park it, you're good. Letting a red hot turbo heat up the the oil in the cartridge and letting it sit there is what kills the turbo. As long as you let the turbo cool for a minute or two before turning off the car, you will be okay.
@Stavo1420
@Stavo1420 6 лет назад
milanmastracci Yeah but I'am also use to working with much bigger turbos like aftermarket RB25 turbos and 1JZ and 2JZ turbos which most of the time don't have coolant line just oil which barely does much for the turbos but keeps them lubricated, also they definitely get red hot.

5:45 Good job messing up that inlet flange with hammer blows on the edge. 6:10 10 millimeters? you mean M6 X 1 maybe? 6:40 Why would it run metal on metal when it's actually with cold oil that you get maximum pressure?
