So yeah, like SliceyDicey pointed out, if they didn't have the second detent ball, then when you press the button, the first detent ball would disengage completely and the blade would 'fall out' in many positions, making it, depending on the legal definition, either a 'gravity knife' or an automatic. So, it's not just to strengthen the detent, but to make it such that the knife would remain closed even when the button is pressed and skirt those (stupid) laws.
tron tim not the end all be all but knife rights has LA and State laws both allowing manual folders. >3” just can’t be open carried. And if the cop is really being a jerk clipped to a pocket can qualify as open carry since the clip is showing.
@@NickShabazz I even read about the double detent before this. I figured it was going to be something more Emerson style. I never would have thought to just use a spring instead of making another pseudo lockbar. Neat stuff
I think the second detent was because it couldn't drop open with the button because of legalities or something. I think I remember Eric saying that in a video and adding the second detent was why it was delayed.
Weirdly, if you don’t press the button, it works exactly like a classic gravity knife. Just try and fling the blade out, and it comes right open. It doesn’t free drop, but it definitely opens. Also oddly. The detent isn’t all the strong. It’s adequate, for sure, but not super strong.
Hey Nick, just wanted to say that the simple act of you closing your videos by wishing me a wonderful rest of the day is really pleasant. It's the small things like that that keep me coming back time after time, even if it's a review of a product I'm not really interested in (This one is not the case, I VERY much want a Smock).
@@GUNSnDOZES Just FYI, I tried it both ways, and without the second catch counterpresssure on the blade, it has noticeably more side-to-side play between open and closed. Check it out.
So tonight, evidently four years after you posted this video, my wife and I were taking apart my relatively new Smock to put in some Skiff bearings. We got flummoxed, frustrated, and confused. In short this video saved a lot more frustration. Probably too dramatic to say it saved a marriage but I just wanted you to know, this video was incredibly helpful. You know I’m a fan like so many. But a deeply appreciative fan who leans on you, again like so many do. Thanks!
You are like a kid on Christmas morning as you take your Smock apart.Removing the pocket clip improves the egos ..Much more comfortable without it.Thanks for posting.
I just received the 20CV version yesterday and I'm buying Smock's red g-10 scales to give it more pop. Thanks for the great video, I wanted to see how easy it was to disassemble and put back together!
Thanks Nick!! You helped me out. I took my smock apart and I could not figure out where that little spring came from. Two detent balls does make it smoother. You’re an ace!!
I was replacing the scales on my Smock, the second detent ball and spring came out and I had no idea where they came from. Immediately went here and discovered where to put it and what it was. I've never seen 2 detent balls before so I was freaking out! Thanks, Nick for helping me out
It's really great that you had this video up, I just cleaned my cousins for him, and if I hadn't known that second ball wasn't captured, I'd be buying him a new knife. 🥲
Thank god you made this video…got my smock in today and had already received an order for a new handle. I replace one side and had trouble with the second side when the liner lock or some larger pin fell out so then I had to take it all apart when that stupid tiny ball came out! Then..to make matters worse I see a tiny spring! That’s when I turned to RU-vid and of course you always make great vids. I’m lucky you made this. Thank you.
Let's be honest here. It's absolutely fantastic. Why would Spyderco even go back to using regular compression locks now? The push button compression lock is a huge improvement.
Thanks for the preview! Stock mentioned the secondary detent in one of his update videos, I was about to explain Spyderco’s rationale and just noticed you’re already on top of it.
I love all of your videos, but this was by far the most entertaining vid I've seen on your channel. That whole extra detent ball + spring thing was enthralling.
I’m so glad you released this video! I’ve been wondering how they did the second detent since I heard about it a few months ago. It’s nice that it’s so easily removed and reversible if one were to want to put it back. I understand they had to do it for compliance reasons, but it’s nice that we who don’t live in places with ridiculous laws can easily take it out and make the knife better for free.
Thanks again Nick, great video, so informative, I just installed set of Reylight titanium frag scales, that 2nd detent can be a bit tricky, lovin the Smock .Cheers Nick 👍
Boy this sure is a pretty knife, personally I love a boxy handle so this is almost perfect. That button on the compression lock is fantastic as well, I don’t mind the regular one but this gives me the positives you get with the axis lock.
Thanks for the video, Nick. Great job, as always! I love the knife. I think it is a real gem for this price point. There are several ways it could have been better. The clip is awful, but that can be fixed easily. The detent on mine isn't great out of the box, but I assume it will improve as it breaks in. All in all, I am extremely happy with mine. (learned a valuable lesson on Blade HQ pre-order system. I will never use that again btw)
You know, I did exactly what you warned us not to and lost the second detent ball-simply gone! But don't despair, fellow klutzes, if it happens to you. I popped a ball from an extra bearing I had lying around, dropped it in, and it's working fine!
Here's another one...Who else wishes they would drop the CF laminate and just do a nicely finished G-10. The laminate just reminds me of those atrocious CF stickers you see on vehicles. Either do carbon fiber or don't. No faking it.
I'm pretty sure this knife will have a better fall shut action if you remove the secondary detent. I handled the prototype at a show last year that didn't have the secondary detent and the action was insanely good. I imagine the constant pressure it will apply to the blade will slow down the close and also make it so you can't flip it open just by depressing the button.
I can confirm. I took out the 2nd detent and oiled everything. Blade falls free and shuts with no wrist action whatsoever. Plus you can open it by just pressing the button.
Wow, this knife looks so cool, and so different from a typical spyderco design. I don't know If I really need those speed holes on it, but I still want one.
The extra detent ball and spring may be innovative, but I must say I much prefer mine without them. They reside in a tiny bag inside the original box now. The action is actually much better with it gone. Totally drop shut now.
I've been looking forward to this knife. If I manage to pick one up I'd like to see how it works if one removes the second detent... I like to be able to "fling open" button locks.
This is such a cool knife and it's great to see something different. If it was possible, it would have been great if they could have moved the push button forward or made the diameter of the button (between the scales at least) smaller so the finger choil/cut out area didn't need to be so big. Not sure if that would be doable, just a thought I had. That being said, I still love mine and love carrying and using it.
I am really liking the looks of this knife! I wish the blade was only 3”, but at least the cutting edge being under 3” might get by..If the cop isn’t mad at you ;) still want to buy one!
Well Kevin Smock did said there is a lot of after market clip for deep carry. But that is extra $$ for me. Like $30 for a titanium clip. and another $30 for shipping. (I'm not in USA.) And I really dun like knife tip peeping from my pocket. People here are paranoid on knife.
Gadget yoyo sorry America centric just suggesting that one specifically since the ... arc of the clip is offset so it doesn’t cover the lanyard hole but yeah they are 30 bucks
@@1968gadgetyo :- I agree about the clip. In Canada, I'm still waiting for the knife...and I suspect that the second detent's removal / blade drop possibility is holding the knife up at Customs...it could be modified to be a gravity knife. Almost afraid to say it (who is listening) but since the dealer has not confirmed delivery from Spyderco, I don't think it made it across the border. So, I guess I'll hold off on buying that deep carry clip.
This is one of the first Spyderco knives I've seen that didn't look horrid. Nice looking blade, interesting design, cool double detent. Not bad at all. That forward choil is a bit weird, but otherwise it doesn't look bad.
The second detent hinders the action of the knife. When I removed it, "spider flips" and back flips were easy. Save the ball and spring if ever you need to sell the knife in original condition. Otherwise, remove that silly detent and make a beautiful knife even better.
i want this...One thing i wish more knife companies would do is go to Ceramic Ball Bearings vs Stainless Steel...i switched 2 of my ZTs to Ceramic Ball Bearings and the action is SOO much better...
Second detent was one of the reasons the thing took so damn long. They didnt want it to be able to accidentally actuate if something hit the button. Also helps with gravity knife laws I guess(?)
I just got Mine yesterday evening. Took itapart today to dye the scales. I was supper careful taking it apart extreamly slow and easy as to not loose that second detent ball and It was all good EXCEPT there was no spring. The ball did roll out slowly onto a cheep thin fridge magnet (one of those business card magnets) I laid right on my cleaning mat. No Spring??? Do I call Spyderco and ask if this is a manufacturing error or a slight modification done between batches????
I would love to see some of these changes, especially the detent, brought over to the Sliverax. Paul Alexander did a bang-up job on that design, but the factory just screwed it up to the point that I didn't want it.
Nick I’m just as impressed with your torx tools as with your disassembly. Can you put out a link to your tools. Oh crap you’ve mentioned that before. Is it in the description. I’ll check. Boy I will feel really small if it’s there 😂. If not can you repost your lil tool package. Thanks
I did the same thing. pre-ordered one the same day Blade HQ opened it up. I never heard a word from them... So I contacted them and their reply was that I didn't get in on the first batch, and now I "might" get in by May. So I found one through another dealer and already have it in hand. The system Blade HQ uses for pre-orders is a joke. Never again for me.
Just got mine in the mail today..Doesn't seem to be a detent ball ramp on new batch and mine was pretty gritty out of the box.. Other than that its a pretty nice knife...Great vid
Grind out a little and chamfer the sharpening/finger choil ( maybe a little jimping) , get rid of the lanyard hole and put the wire clip on it towards the end for a deeper carry. Put real carbon fiber scales ( Kapara or like my Knifecenter exclusive Manix). If possible get rid of the full steel liners by just using the CF scales and compression lock liner(PM2) . You probably would have a perennial top seller for years to come.
Sooo, I have 3 now. 2 modified by Kevin and one mostly stock, except I took the polished g10 scales off the KnifeJoy 20cv and took off the peel-ply. When I did that, I stupidly lost the spring for the 2nd detent. But...the action is actually better without it. Who knew.
That is an interesting way to add detent but I can see that ball getting lost in a hurry if you are not aware of it. You would think they would mention that as a caution since all others are captured. I think the review could be interesting. I am looking forward to it.
Nick... (Pedant mode engaged) This isn't "peel-ply". Peel-ply is full cf that has a texture created by "peeling" a layer of material that was applied prior to curing, that has the reverse of the desired texture. See the CF PM 2 for 'correct' peel-ply. (This is simply cf/g10 laminate). I assume this has the "Basket-weave" texture like the sage1, Gayle Bradleys, et. al.?
Nick, when you review the knife, can you address the position of the finger groove? Seems a little far back from the blade. And also the front choil. That thing looks kind of sharp and a little dangerous compared to spyderco's normal 50/50 choils. Thanks.
Both are byproducts of the design and function. The finger groove is so far back as a result of the corner flipper. If you look at the knife when Nick has the blade open but the second scale off, you can see how that chunk of steel that is the flipper is now where a normal forward finger groove would be, so the groove is further back and your middle finger sits in it. Your index finger rests on top of the flat portion that is the flipper tab. The “finger choil” is also a result of the interaction between the blade and lock mechanism. If that cut out weren’t there, when the knife is closed it would hit the push button on the inside. The choil extends so far out because when closed, the blade wraps around the button and give it clearance. Some of these little aspects may be a turn off for some, but once you realize it’s a result of some pretty clever design it’s easily appreciated.
Nice looking knife from spyderco. Not to fond of flippers, this ball bearing pivot is in my eyes a weak point, but it is pretty good looking knife- to be a spyderco. The look appeals to me. Probably not a knife to carry in the woods here up in the north thou.
So I got a smock from my fiancee over the weekend (I know, she's great) and I was excited to take it apart and check it all out. I had to come back and check this video out to be sure I wasn't mistaken...my smock has no detent ball ramp. I'm not sure if this was a production run change or an issue with mine alone. I will be looking into it more, but I thought I'd post here first to see if anyone seeing this (or nick) has any info about this.
