Trying to balance load carrying capability with good on-road manners is a little tricky with leaf springs, this episode we endeavour to make the HJ47 ride better and be more capable off-road by thinning out the heavy leaf packs with a little DIY knowhow. Lets see if it works.

If your clips in leaf springs have a nut & bolt set up (Some have tapped threads , no nut ) for safey reasons i always ensure they are fitted on the springs with nuts facing to tyre / wheel . Reason for this is that if the nut became loose and vibrates off the bolt the bolt will rattle out of the clip towards tyre , potential for damage to tyre / crash . I have seen it on front spring when vehicle turned . bolt half hanging out clip tore sidewall . ( some clips will be positioned well clear of tyre and never be a issue ) Rough ride in leaf spring land cruiser 40 when brand new vehicles they were fitted with rubber shackle & pin bushes , rubber bushes in shocks , most aftermarket bushes now polyurethane and are a harder durometer than rubber . original shocks were hydraulic , not gas hydraulic big bore big shaft heavy valved units . Originals were very easy to compress but firm to extend . Spring absorbs the bump & shock slows the rebound of the spring . If shock is big heavy its harder to compress. Short wheel base and long wheel base had same springs in front with same hydraulic shock absorbers . Swb Rear had different springs and shocks to lwb Rear , Shocks they were still plain hydraulic but different part numbers When you get genuine rear shocks for 40 series ( standard height suspension ) they are same open and closed lengths , but valved different especially on extension . Swb is much easier to extend than the lwb , which is way harder to extend as lwb payload capacity and springs are much heavier than swb. Most aftermarket suspensions have one rear shock absorber available for rear of swb , its the same heavy big bore gas as long wheel base and is far too heavy for swb applications . It can be tricky to set up aftermarket leaf suspension , especially with heavy valved big bore gas shock absorbers and expect to get a flexible ride with 35 psi in tyres on a unladen vehicle . Common to buy heavy spring packs and remove the third leaf from top if its suitable to remove as in no clips on it , and if you have a choice a softer valved shock absorber , I would say most aftermarket shocks are just too heavy which gives harsh rides , so much marketing hype out there , its all business . ( note factory original standard springs with standard factory hydraulic shocks and rubber bushing all round provided a acceptable comfort in ride , but not much axle housing to rubber cushion bump stop clearance ) Just about all aftermarket springs now are lifted style and longer to provide the lift , some are thicker material than originals , and vary in quality and features . There are still manufacturers mostly overseas that are producing standard height original type springs for these die hard vehicles if you are wanting to have your vehicle back to original heights and ride comfort they are the springs to select . I’ve got a set Dever HD3’s I had bought for my Raptor I knew they were super stiff , but I tow with my truck , but when we put them on even after broke them in they are still super stiff so, I’m going give this a shot… I haven’t been off road since I put them because stiffness the rear. Great video. Thanks

Hey there, Very interested as to how the spring removal job worked out for you< is it a better ride etd ? I have a HJ47 and ordered the same springs early on and once fitted realised there was no give in them, they"re crazy stiff, way to hard for a weekend cruise around, I think I'll remove a couple of leaf's in the rear and maybe one in the front as well. Thanks in advance Maca

Cheers mate, yes it is better and if your not going to carry heaps of weight, it is worth the effort. Still a fairly rough ride though. 40 series life mate. 😂🤙🏻

i just put extended shackles on my gu . the intial spring rate seems lighter , it rides way better . im still going to remove some leaves though as 300kg is the most it ever sees . im making high clearance spring hangers while im in there. Something to consider taking that second load leaf out gives the whole stack more leverage over the bottom load leaf . That will improve initial feel more than just fact a leaf is gone . . Perfect choice in my view and thats a thought process we apply to shim stacks in shocks which are essentially round leaf springs

Lots of rubbish about front seats and No explanation on how to actually remove the springs just fast forwarded footage with music playing.. This is what separates rookies from actual quality videos like Chris fix

😂 thanks for taking the time to comment, and yes I’m a rookie. Are you a pro at everything when you decide to step out of your comfort zone, or are you a full time keyboard warrior because you seem to have nailed that. You and your comments are what is wrong with the world, so fast to critique, but to lazy to have a crack yourself. Hopefully we meet one day and you can tell me to my face how shit my video was. My bet is you would never do it in person. Good luck getting off the lounge.

The point of the video was softening the ride height by removing leafs. Wasn't intended to be comprehensive tutorial for dummies.

Yeah I agrre with this bloke here, I pulled apart the leaves in my Hilux I had years ago and put tonnes of grease on all the leaves, it made it ride so much smoother and travelled way better. Well worth doing...👍
