How to Display a Sword

***The sword on the thumbnail is a Chinese sword from the Ming Dynasty. I wouldn't display a Japanese sword like that.***
All swords (except the katana) can be found at lkchensword.com/
Thought I'd chime in on all the YT chatter about how to display swords. In Chinese martial arts, swords are actually displayed blade edge down, and with the handle on either side, based on the scabbard ornamentation. There are a couple of things extra that came from my teacher and how we displayed weapons in the school, but that goes more into traditions and symbolism.

Discipline is the heart of every art. Tradition helps us focus and keeps our ancestors alive.

I'm a primarily a katana guy (only own one chinese style sword [as of now, haha]). So I learned a lot from this video. Thanks.

NIce video. This is what I have learned about Katanas. Japanese swords like the katana are displayed the same manner in which they are worn. Because the katana is worn with the cutting edge facing up, it should also be displayed with the cutting edge facing up. Displaying the katana with the cutting edge facing up is a means of "respecting" the sword. This dates back hundreds of years to feudal Japan, during which this was the standard way of displaying katanas Traditional Japanese etiquette says that katanas displayed with the tsuka on the left signals peace, whereas displaying the katana with the tsuka on the right signals combat readiness and ability to fight. I do not have Chinese swords to display. Perhaps one day. 😊

Hey Sifu, great demonstration! This is a perfectly nice concise discussion which can be easily shared for anyone who wants to know how/why some swords are displayed one way vs. another way. Wonderful selection of examples. Something you may find interesting; if you haven't already read the article "A Life in Stone: Images of Weapons During the Han Dynasty" by Dr. Benjamin Judkins on Kungfu Tea he shows off many depictions of Han era sword racks for personal use. Consistently the hilts for both Jian and Dao are shown on the left side with the scabbard slide facing outwards (just as you demonstrated). The same is true for crossbows, with the grips on the left side. Surprisingly, polearms which are also on the same racks show their heads, on the left hand side as well: the 'stabby/cutty' parts hanging out next to the sword hilts!

This is a great video. Is there a good resource for finding sword display stands? I really appreciate you sharing this as I am about to obtain a Japanese sword and want to display it respectfully. Thank you!

Greetings sir! Is there any chance that you would do a demonstration with the Crossbowmens dao? I would love to see that beast in action. Also, thank you for this video, i plan to get more chinese swords, so its really helpful!

Absolutely!!! It is quite a beast compared to the katana, Qi Jiguang really pushed the sword design to have an edge on his enemies. It's longer, and a bit heavier overall. But yeah, there will be a demo down the road for sure!

What an elegant very well done video, totally agree on the Chinese swords, but the main controversy is over how Japanese style katana, wakizashi are to be displayed which is a much more heated topic, not sure if you wanted to avoid that area...but enjoyed the video nonetheless

If we work from the principle here (display it as you wear it), then katana and wakizashi should be displayed edge up, since they are worn edge up and held with the obi itself.
