I used to be an engineer, the type that builds stuff... like large encampments that would hold a couple thousand troops. Field hygiene was an issue that was consciously built into the layout of said camps. Latrine, shower, etc. You had to build this stuff away from where people slept and ate, (preferably downwind) and properly with soakage pits when possible to avoid standing water. Beyond that, most people may not realize it, but Mess kits were designed the way they are for rapid cleaning in heated barrels. (you ran your utensils and kit lids through the handle) The barrels were, Initial rinse, soap, and final rinse. You dipped and swished your entire kit, holding on by the handle. When you have hundreds of guys eating and needing to wash their mess kits, its the most efficient way. The point i'm trying to make is field hygiene is important, so much so that it's intrinsic to how the military builds and runs camps. The vast majority of diseases you'll catch in the field, particularly Gastro intenstine, is from hand to mouth. Don't underestimate the value of good field sanitation. If you wash anything, wash your hands. Historically, entire army's have been brought down by disease brought about by poor field sanitation.

Thank you for helping to get the point across. For households do you have any hints on how to build the latrine or troughs that Khris mentioned?
@MiddleOutdoorsman
@MiddleOutdoorsman 2 года назад
@@nrob450 Apparently, youtube doesn't like links to where you can purchase stuff...... Since i'm typing this a second time.... I dig a latrine for my family every time we go camping. Go to everyones online retailer that starts with an A, and search for "1 man hunting blind" (2nd item) and "potable toilet for camping". (1st or 3rd item). If i was to dig a latrine in my backyard, I'd pick a spot farthest away from the house, any water spigot, and any area that traditionally floods out during heavy rains. Dig a hole as small in diameter, and as deep as i could get it. The depth of an E tool lasts about 4 or 5 days for a family of 3. Should be able to get it deeper with a full sized shovel, but you'll have to scope the dirt out with your hands, or a posthole digger. Leave yourself room to move the outhouse after the first hole fills up. If you can't find anything else, a little dirt tossed in after having a sit down is like flushing the toilet. Helps keep the stink down, not entirely, but it helps. Keep the blind open and ventilated if you can. If it's going to rain, zip up the blind.

A bottle of water with some Apple Cider Vinegar in it and paper towel cut into smaller squares works very well for body wipes and doesn't irritate sensitive areas and keeps order down and is cheap. Dry shampoo for emergencies is a good idea. Less water waste as water is needed to drink and stay alive. Spray bottle with vinegar and water is good for cleaning dishes right after using them and stops water waste. Water will keep us alive, so be aware of not wasting one drop of water.

A hand-held peri bottle / bidet is worth a mention. Even though it uses a little water, it also reduces or eliminates your need for paper. If sick, you can go through a lot of paper, but a bidet could get you through a bout of diarrhea with little to no wiping. Doubles as a quick shower too.

We often think of unlimited water, like our current day showers, or no water, as we imagine in survival situations. We often forget the option of a ~little~ water... out of a squirt bottle! I've tried to perfect what used to be called a "sponge bath" for a survival setting and practiced it on myself for weeks at a time at several different junctures. You take a two cup plastic container (I use an empty peanut butter jar) and put a teaspoon of peppermint soap in it (or any liquid soap) diluted in water. Put your clean wash rag in that, beginning to wipe from the cleanest part of your body to the least clean, stopping short with your personal area. That you use one wipe for that you can throw away, again cleanest to least cleanest. The peppermint water you can re-dip a clean rag in for your next "sponge bath" until it is out. For hair I prefer to use same squirt bottle to build up a shampoo that can either dry into the hair or be rinsed out, with minimal water. Some prefer cornstarch or baking soda as a dry shampoo. I know of a man who lived in a van and cleaned this way for over 20 years (still going) actually preferring it over the common shower even when he visited family, feeling perfectly clean already. 💡

It really is. And has been overlooked on most other channels. Guy really thinks this stuff through without letting his mind go off into bullshit conspiracies. We don't need the BS, people, there are far more REAL things to worry about. Right now, we are seeing it happen: Russia threatening nuclear war. Global climate change has my little town, that experienced some of the highest temperatures ever recorded on earth, approaching 50 degrees Celsius a year ago is exactly half that this year. Think about that, almost exactly 1 year ago. This year we have yet (May 18) to see 20 C. Today it will be 13 C. So you Americans can understand, that means that when it was 120 degrees Fahrenheit at this time of year in 2021, it is 60 degrees Fahrenheit exactly one year later. If that seems like normal temperature variations to you, you need serious help and possibly a little education. Astronomers have started to wonder at the number of near miss asteroids that seem to be happening at a much higher than average rate. So far no explanation. We are having a very active solar max as we approach a 2025 peak. On fact what we are experiencing now, could be an indication a Carrington level event could be in our near future and we have no understanding of what this may do to our satellite systems and power grid. Do I need to mention the word Pandemic. The COVID pandemic was a very minor pandemic. My biggest fear, being a free and peaceful Canadian, is the sharp turn toward authoritarian rule in the United States. There is going to be a civil war and I hope you are all prepared for that. From an outsider it appears inevitable. Maybe there is something I don't get. Maybe Americans can display this much viceral hatred toward one another and it just doesn't mean anything. But from an outsider's perspective, it looks like you people hate each other far more than you have anyone else, including the Chinese Communist Party and the vile and dictatorial Russians. Many of you openly support Putin, while calling political opponents child molesting devil worshippers... But like I said, maybe it is just an American thing, maybe I just don't get it and you'll all be fine. But my ultimate point is and was, something real is going to disrupt our world community, we don't need to make shit up. And I appreciate this site, for that exact reason. No BS. We are gonna get hit with something society shaking, of not ending, in the very near future.

Fair warning: Hopefully this will help someone. A repairman switched a hose that had been used for rinsing a sewer tank to become the hose that supplied an RV with fresh 'city' water. He thought the fresh water flowing through it would sufficiently rinse the hose to repurpose it for household water. Not true. Not realizing all of this was going on, I began to get sick at the first of this year... diarrhea, vomiting, bedridden for weeks at a time... wondering if it was covid, was it old age setting in, etc.? I began to double up on probiotics, on electrolytes, trying to get to the bottom of it. The part about using water supplies for flushing is why I tell people to stock up on non-potable water. I keep several jugs of it, usually left over from canning, on hand in the old jugs our kitty litter came in. Also have catchment plans in place. Like reusing cooking and wash water. That is more than acceptable to flush with in a short term solution.

A hybrid between the pool noodle bucket and the camping toilet is a medical bedside commode. Mine has a catch bucket securely slid into a bracket under the underside of the potty seat, with a very sturdy frame around the whole unit. So yeah, I have to empty it...but its a lot more comfortable and safer for me to sit on (because I'm physically disabled) than a bucket. Less tippy too, which for me isn't just less potentially gross but could prevent a real emergency.

I am so glad we still have the outhouse my Grandfather originally built way back in the 1940's. It was pumped out for the final time when they finally got indoor plumbing and a septic tank system put in around the mid 1950's or so. I redid the outhouse and upgraded it about 25 years ago for emergency use like power outages that lasted for several days or more. It has a normal toilet seat now, has a roll holder and a cabinet to store extra rolls, a can or two of air freshener, etc. Outside we have a drum that holds lime to use as needed. We have plenty of Lanterns and Flashlights to get to and from the house to the Outhouse on the back porch. Life is Good!!!

@AMKB01
@AMKB01 2 года назад
I'm in the country and on a septic system as well. We've been here 4 years now, and it's backed up into our basement 3 times. We don't have a gravity septic system. Our tank has two chambers; everything goes into the first chamber, with the solids sinking to the bottom. The greywater flows over near the top, into the second chamber. When that fills, a float triggers an expeller pump in our basement, which pumps the grey water to an outlet a couple hundred feet away from the house. We get the tank emptied twice a year. Unfortunately, the reason it was backing up into the house turned out to be because the pipe between the house into the tank got clogged, repeatedly. Even after having a plumber auger roots out of the pipes, it still clogged up again less than 6 months later, and we're not sure why. Thankfully, we have a really awesome septic guy, but the last time we had to empty the tank before we could clear the pipe, we had to ask a neighbour with a front end loader to clear a lane of snow for us, so the septic truck could get close enough! So having a back up is essential! We do have an outhouse. A bit hard to get to in the winter. Right now we've got a lot of flooding, and there's a "lake" between us and the outhouse, so we still need to have a back up for our back up. LOL

Shitting into our water supply is one of the stupidest things humans do. I have used a DIY compostable toilet in my RV for years - no smell and no making sewage. There is a urine diverter that puts the urine in the grey tank and then the poop is covered with sawdust/hamster cage fillings. I have a nice toilet seat and a wooden surround that makes it very comfortable to use. The poop and sawdust makes great compost for your flower gardens, To use it for veggies gardens it must be heated by the sun to a degree that it destroys any pathogens. Kitty litter would work but makes it unusable as compost and very heavy, unless using some of those newer light versions. Pine chips are a plenty where I live and leave the room smelling just fine. Thanks Chris for a very thorough overview.

in girl scouts they taught us to drop in a bar of soap in a tube sock (1970s) LOL and tie to a tree limb to wash your hands and not lose the bar of soap and the air will dry out the sock and soap for the next use. for the water you take an empty gallon water and poke a hole at the bottom with a small stick. pull that stick out to wash your hands quickly and put the stick back in when you are done.

Spot on. Remember dysentery and the like has killed more solders than swords, spears, bombs and bullets have. I remember as a kid my grandparents had just recently switched from an outhouse to a indoor toilet, they used to keep a 50 lb. bag of lime and a bucket of ashes in their outhouse. The ash was used after every use and a half cup of lime daily to control the smell and Coliform Bacteria

50% of hippy communes failed due to sickness. Mostly they didn't know how to live in the country side and made terrible misstates like, dug the outhouse too close to the place they dug the well etc - - - over 8 months (or more) the water went bad, crops failed. They refused to except help from local farmers because "they are over 30 man".

Regarding the out house, use post hole digger to dig a deep hole so you only need one hole a week. Cut the bottom off a 5 gallon bucket to put over the hole to set on. Line the bucket sides with news paper to catch splatter. After you finish, put the news paper into the hole. For peeing, guys can use a funnel and 2 ltr pop bottle. Cap between uses. If you can get them, a 3 ltr pop bottle or juice bottle will let you loose the funnel. Girls can use the funnel by setting the bottle and funnel into a bucket. If you dump liquids down the sink it takes much less water to flush.

I am not sure wear I would put the used bags, BUT after I used them up, I would be poring the bucket out at curb "Just like every one else" It would not go well especially in 110 degree day witch we have in the summer. PS I also have 110 rolls of toilet paper. Just walking across the street you would get poop all over your shoes. The stink would be overwhelming. People would get sick and die. I think MOST people would fill their toilet to the top hoping it would eventually start working agin. NOTE don't pee and Poop in the same bag.

For those without a ready source of sawdust, get a bag of pelletized horse bedding. It's sawdust compressed into little round cylinders of pine or cedar and breaks down into saw dust when it gets wet. If you don't have a farm supply store nearby, the same stuff is sold (with a higher price tag) as Feline Pine cat litter. Space permitting a forty pound bag of this stuff might be worth prepping because it is so absorbent and biodegradable. Don't put it in your septic tank, though.

Human waste, if properly managed, is a great way to fertilize your garden. “Humanure” is an endless and free supply of high nitrogen content for plants. Personally, I would mostly use it for fruit trees and plants where the roots aren’t the main crop, simply because of the “ick” factor.

On the right track, CP. Miss one inportance factor - Long term waste Mgt. You show only short term. Here is some tips from a old school guy. Seperate solids and liquids. Use pine shavings, lime, and cat litter for semi solids. Bulid a outhouse that uses a composting toilet. Waste pit should be away from the house and Water sources.
@LierinEdana
@LierinEdana 2 года назад
The Humanure handbook addressed long term management very well, along with safe composting of human waste and after a year using it on ornamental and fruit trees. Can't recommend adding it to a vegetable garden, but once composted (and barring any communicable disease) it poses no more danger. A better solution for older people as well as young children is a bedside commode with the five gallon bucket replacing the small one that is normally attached. This is what we used for the year we were building our cabin and it was easy to maintain and comfortable. We used sawdust we got for free from the sawmill where we got our lumber ~ stored it in rubbermaid totes stacked up behind our little outhouse so it was easy to refill the sawdust bucket when we needed to. One thing I do not recommend at all for long term use is anything other than any septic safe toilet paper. The other option is to purchase bulk washcloths, one color for each family member, and use a rinse system with bleach or vinegar to soak them between washings. A good supply of a tried and true laundry soap such as Fels Naptha and washing soda for all laundry isn't a bad idea, along with any of the small manual washing machines available at various online sellers is also a good idea. With proper planning, it is easy to set up a small combination outhouse and shower (get one of the solar camping showers and water bag combos), as well as your clothes washing (don't forget a washline and clothes pins!) that is clean, sanitary, and easy to maintain. if you have the space, set up a compost area for human waste now ... because dumping bags in a pit for long term anything is just one more source of illness that should be avoided. If you have Kindle services, you can read through the book for free and just take notes to keep with your other prepping notations, articles, recipes, etc.

Benefits of living in the country where the electric fails quite frequently, we are already prepared for this and have to do this on occasion. About 8 years ago we list power for 22 days when a Deracio came through and decimated our power line infrastructure. We have a rain barrel with hand pump system for non potable water use to flush our waste into our septic system and a hand pump for our fresh water spring. Wash your hands often! Keep your hands out of your mouth, out of your eyes. Use a spoon, fork or sport or chopsticks to eat your food, not your hands. I had aerobic dysentery back some 53 years ago. Antibiotics, lots and lots of hydration fluids, living on a toilet! In my older age today, it would probably kill me. Endemic typhus hospitalized me and corresponding encephalitis almost killed me (flea bites were the cause). Both took several months to recover from. In a SHTF situation you are on your own! And if you get hurt or sick, you hurt and endanger each and every member in your group! It's not you anymore. Growing up has to be done in minutes, not weeks or months! Hygiene, proper waste disposal, safety are all very important. Expect rampant pinkeye after three or four days after bad times begin. Prevention is paramount. Stop it before it starts.

Yep. I was in Taiwan when I was 19 years old and healthy. I got dysentery and was horribly sick for 10 days, full recovery took longer. I'm now 70 and I believe today it would kill me, maybe even with good, accessible medical care, which may or may not be available. Sanitation will save lives, TAKE IT VERY SERIOUSLY.

We live in the PNW where we expect a 9.0+ earthquake & tsunami like Japan & Chile. Water & sewer lines not expected to be repaired on the Oregon Coast for minimum of 2-3 years. Bedside commodes are adjustable, sturdy & easy to clean. Buckets sit low and are no stable. Some commodes fit over bucket. Most have pans. When water is limited, use a weed sprayer like you hold in your hand then use spray wand to spray weeds…but fill it with water. The weed sprayer, filled with water, naturally limits use & provides pressure for cleaning, etc. 55 gallon food grade barrels are less than $40. Can store prepping items in the barrel. Once disaster strikes, take prepper items out, and put waste inside.
