How To Distill Hand Sanitizer Into Alcohol Fuel

"Stove Secrets" - Alcohol stove builds, tips, tricks, and secrets for the true DIY gear junkie. No fancy or expensive tools & machinery required! In this episode I demonstrate a simple method for how to distill hand sanitizer into a viable alternative alcohol stove fuel. Although not the most efficient fuel source, distilled hand sanitizer can indeed be used as an alternate or emergency fuel. The distilling process separates the additives and moisturizers from the gel, as well as renders it into a liquid form of ethanol. It can be used in certain pressurized stoves, but is most effective when used in a very basic metal container type "stove" in combination with a pot stand. The major benefit to this fuel is that it is commonly carried and the stove system can be easily improvised in-the-field.

Tasted awful. Thought maybe it was the lisa soap or something, but nope. Him and a few others were willingly chugging the 💩. Never saw Anyone get sick, tho. Some appeared drunk, but maybe acting idk. Only negative affect I saw was one guy, lost his voice. Went from a normal male voice, to incredibly groggy/scratchy and hard to understand for days. But everyone else seemed to enjoy it. Michael Filippi depends where he’s from but if he’s from US then yeah he’s not the legal age but if he’s from Canada he’s legal. Drinking age is 19😂 and in the UK it’s 18. Stumbled across this video a couple of weeks ago, and so glad I did. We had 15 litres of 75% alcohol based hand sanitiser lying around at work gathering dust. After spending about £3 on cheap table salt and an afternoon in the kitchen, I now have about 10 litres of very cheap camping fuel. The only thing I have found is that it does leave a little bit of salt residue around the edge of the tin and a bit of water in the bottom of the tin when you burn it, but that wipes out very easily. Around 6-7 minutes to boil 500ml (just over 2 cups in your language) and is a little less efficient than the likes of Bio-ethanol or meths, but then again it's also way cheaper. Make sure you don't use the wrong hand sanitizer though. If you accidentally use isopropyl or something it can hospitalize you/

If you want to take the time to mess with it, you can further purify and concentrate the resulting alcohol by distilling it. I tried it with miniature still I made a long time ago just to see what would come of it and it cleaned up pretty good and left a higher concentration of around 80% - 90+% alcohol that was almost pure. The process left a lot of junk in the still pot.

Coffee filter trick! Fold it into quarters (in Hal and then fold that half in half then hold it there for the next part) and pull out one layer to make a nice conical filter with ease

alcohol basically. What you're doing here is a different method of purification. You're essentially causing a precipitation reaction and following it up with filtration. Adding salt causes hand sanitizer components to precipitate out of alcohol solution and allows you to filter it out, leaving purified alcohol. While this is a method of purification, it does not utilize boiling point and is thus not distillation.

That's technically not distilling. Distillation requires a distillation flask. Distilling ethanol hand sanitizer can yield ethanol and a little water which can be used for fuel or laboratory purposes.

It works but can leave a residue in your stove if you don't filter all the glycerin out. Can also use it to make a clean burning Fire Gel if you add it to a mixture of calcium and acetic acid.

Tyvek- You CAN burn hand sanitizer as is but the problem is that hand sanitizer in the gel state tends to pop and spurt. The person asking if it was drinkable. No most hand sanitizers are 95-99% isopropyl alcohol. The only alcohol that Is drinkable is grain alcohol. Denatured alcohol is about 90-95% drinkable alcohol but has been treated with some kind of poison that makes the alcohol unsafe to drink.

It will burn as is with some difficulty, however the alcohol needs to basically be in a liquid state in order to burn properly in most alcohol stoves. Also, the gelling agent can be considered a "contaminant" for this application and contributes to this type of fuels poor performance i.e. lower burning temperature and excessive soot production. But really. Putting things into perspective, if things were that bad, I'd save the sanitizer and find some wood.

This still contains water. Your best bet is to buy denatured alcohol. Its ethanol and methanol so you can NOT drink it which voids the liquor tax. Ideally everclear would be great but that's mad money and downright illegal in some states.

You'd also be burning the additional things like Aloe and other stuff they put in there. This process removes most of that and leave you with more pure fuel. As he mentions, it's not the most efficient, but it'll work~

Don't forget that part of the sanitizer is water. 70% ethanol will have about 20% water in it. So, distillation SHOULD get rid of some of the water, added chemicals and other garbage. Making, basically, denatured alcohol.

Distillation uses differences in volatility to separate out two compounds. So no, this is not distillation. I'm pretty sure this is based off solubility principles.

Really very informative..... Simple to do in a pinch. Can the distilled fuel be stored for later use? Any degradation to be concerned with?

Anybody got any ideas how this works? Looks like the salt is breaking down whatever the gelling agent is that they use to thicken the alcohol, cool trick tho thanks John.
