We've had some interest in showing how to do the metal work on some of the pieces that Brian carves, so in this video we should you how to silversmith, or at least one way to go about doing it. Brian takes you from cutting the bezel to soldering to finished item. The lobster is hand carved from antique whale's tooth ivory.

Jewellery making is an entire skill set that some people spend their whole time doing, yet here you are doing a brilliant job of it on top of the numerous other crafting skills you have mastered. You truly are a jack of all trades👌 and a master of all you put your hands too 👏bravo Brian 👌

Thank you so much Dave, that means a ton to me. When I was a kid my dad took me to colonial Williamsburg, it’s a living history place and I got such an eyeful that I’ve wanted to do everything ever since. I’ve been lucky to be able to pursue my indulgences.

Howdy Trulax, so good to hear from you!! I’m glad the owl is holding parliament at your house. The longer videos are fun for me too cause it means Max is involved. I think we have another one in the wings.

Thank you Janson. Yeah, it’s a little bit of a trick getting setup for silver work but so rewarding once you do. Check out Rio Grande’s website and start slow. If you’re interested and want guidance just let me know.

Really interesting. I think the container used for the flux was an ink well. It would have had a hinged top.

Nice setting. That kind of bezel and backing is missing many times. Yours will last longer even if bumped around.

Wonderful. I like it. Could I ask question? I haven't gotten an answer from anyone else and I believe you might know. Is it possible to inlay metal wire into antler or bone or horn or ivory? If the answer is yes,...how?
@StockmanOriginal
@StockmanOriginal 9 месяцев назад
Thank you so much Herschel,we’re so happy you enjoyed the video. If you’re interested in wire inlay then you probably know the process of doing it in wood but for the sake of this conversation I will say it. The wire is flatten first and then you burnish a burr on one edge. Then a channel is cut into the wood and the wire is set into that. Because no wood is removed the grain closes back in on the wire and the burr anchors it there. Now with bone and other hard materials you can’t score a channel, you have to actually remove material and would need a very fine cutter and then undercut the bottom of the channel . You would then tap the wire into the channel which would cause it to mushroom into the undercut and thus anchor it in. It’s a lot harder than setting wire in wood and doesn’t come out as fine. I hope my ramblings helped some. Let me know if you have any questions further.
