I've spent literally thousands on exorbitantly priced crap mattresses that sag after a literally few nights. Anyone who's working towards self-sufficiency re mattresses is bringing us a step closer to disempowering these companies, and has my vote.

@@misshiss4040 I don't care whether you 'buy' it or not, and don't appreciate the inference that I must be fat! It's happened many times, mostly with Harrison (now Harrison Spinks) beds. I thought I'd been unlucky until I recently read the reviews. I read a 'sob story' from a couple who bought a Vera Wang bed and mattress which lasted 2 nights before sagging. In general, the UK doesn't produce fit for purpose mattresses anymore. I've just bought a 2nd hand Relyon mattress from Ebay that's about 35 years old. It's the closest thing I could find to one of the decent mid-range ones from the same make that was bought in the early '90s (before mattress production went down the nick.) It's great - and has proved my theory about modern beds. Where in the UK do you buy your mattresses from, or are you just trolling?

To make closing the zipper easier, put a clean plastic putty knife under the closure, holding the handle in the seam, and advance the putty knife as you close the zipper. At the end, remove the putty knife as near the end of the zipper as possible and finish carefully by hand. This is an upholsterer technique used for making cushions I used as a professional upholsterer, and I swear by it.

I have already used her suggestion for this and other zippered items and you have made my life so much easier (and my vocabulary much nicer)! so, yes Ali, it is important -- and I for on am appreciative that DJ took the time to share her idea on here so that others can benefit from her solution! I just made my own mattress using 100% natural Talalay and love it! After nearly a month of research I learned many things including the industry selling tons of junk filled with materials that are made with toxic chemicals. Where did latex go and why?! I couldn't believe the amount of non-sense being sold to people across the country when for year's latex was king in the industry. Well, profits, profits, profits, as usual is the reason why most are sleeping on junk. Cost of latex isn't a fair enough excuse as to why the bedding industry made such big changes. People are still willing to purchase $2000, $3000 Tempurpedic mattresses when they could have easily made their own latex bed or bought a fully constructed solid latex bed for less. After seeing documentation and countless testimonials on the superior comfort and durability of latex, it seemed quite clear where to invest my money. Thanks for you video! FYI to those reading this...I sleep on a soft Talalay 3" topper with a 9" pocketed coil Med/Firm underneath made by Brooklyn Bedding

@BankruptMonkey

Woah, this would be great for young people who move apartments often to be able to take out and roll each layer like a rug and easily move their mattress! And if I can't afford to buy a full organic mattress right away I can get one layer and the ticking and add to it over time as money allows! Or, I can really do the thing where you rotate your mattress so it wears better, but also be able to even change up where the layers are in the ticking itself! I sound like an infomercial now but I'm just kind of excited about this system!

Thanks for this clarification and my apologies. Your explanation is great! "We also sell fabric by the yard and patterns if you would like to sew your own ticking and wool flake if you would like to stuff and tuft your own wool mattress. If you would like to shear your own sheep, I can give you resources on how to process the wool to make a mattress. At some point, assembly does become DIY, especially when most people don't have the time or resources to wash their own wool and hand card it or to harvest enough natural latex, purchase molds and bake that latex at their house. Since the tree that latex is harvested from is a tropical tree and we don't have tropical zones in the USA, it would be a painstaking process to harvest enough milkweed and then reinvent the wheel to make your own natural latex foam here. If you look at our website, I think you will find a few innovative and original products that will help you create a feel to fit your needs exactly."

This is awesome. I build custom mattresses. I use a tape edge closer and mostly deal with firm spring units and foam. This topper would be a great option. You would have the firmness and long lasting mattress with a plush top.
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 6 лет назад
A tape edge machine certainly lends a traditional finished look to a mattress, but the zippers on our tickings are useful not only for home assembly but also for swapping out layers, usually the top layers, once they have worn out without having to replace the entire mattress.

I love this video. Very real and down to earth. I'm a 30+ year certified nutritionist (nice way of saying I'm an old nutritionist, lol!). I'm in the market for 3, maybe 4 new beds (1 twin, and 2-3 queens, if budget allows) so I need to save every penny I can on this project. This looks like it might be a winner. Question: Is the wool, and cotton, Oeko-Tex or GOTs certified? Also, I've been researching natural latex and wondered what type you use - Dunlop or Talalay, or...? I think Dunlop is made without any chemicals, while Talalay contains some chemicals so they can best regulate the firmness. But I haven't been able to find anything about what exactly these chemicals are, so my understanding is Dunlop may be best, but it's pretty firm which might require more wool. I'm looking for no, zero, nada VOC off-gassing if this is possible. With that said, I wonder if natural latex (Dunlop?) still off-gasses anything? I've avoided natural latex only because of the bad rap I've see regarding the chemicals used in production, but this may be incorrect info, or possibly just related to the specific Talalay.
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 6 лет назад
Our wool is from small US farms that raise their sheep very conscientiously. All of our cotton fabric is GOTS certified as is the latex. The bad rep SYNTHETIC latex has gotten is because of main component, petroleum. Natural and organic latex are not produced from or with petroleum, instead the end product is 96% latex. The other 4% are common elements used as foaming agents. I list them here: www.diynaturalbedding.com/organic-latex-vs-natural/. Organic latex has 0 toxic off gassing chemicals. You can browse the test report here. www.diynaturalbedding.com/product/3-organic-natural-latex-slab/ Dunlop and Talalay are simply different ways to make latex foam and do not affect the naturalness of the foam. They do slightly effect the longevity and the feel of the latex. More on that here.www.diynaturalbedding.com/talalay-vs-dunlop/

For a child or even older patient, some would not want a fill that absorbs liquid unless it is very easily washable and dryable, since they do have accidents. I'd get a latex only or some sort hydro-phobic hull or even a waterproof twill.
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 6 лет назад
Protecting a mattress is certainly easier than washing a mattress, no matter if the ticking is machine washable or not. For protection, we offer the GOTS organic wool puddle pad, which does an excellent job against standard accidents. www.diynaturalbedding.com/product/organic-wool-puddle-pad/ Felted wool not only does a great job keeping the moisture from getting through, it also is an odor diffuser. While your child may smell come morning after an accident, your wool puddle pad won't. Ticking is the zippered case used to hold the mattress components. All of our tickings have a three sided zipper so that the case completely opens for easy layering of your fill. We currently have four different options: Quilted (with wool), Knit (washable and flexible), Expandable (expandable, washable and flexible) and Twill (washable and durable). The ticking used in this video was a combo of two; it was an Expandable Twill Ticking.

That being said, I have previously priced 100% natural (biodegradable) organic mattresses, and have yet to find one for under $4000 (king size - queen is too small for us, what with 3 giant dogs and grandbabies and me doing the "spread eagle" etc!) before shipping! I'm sure that everything else they list are as affordable as their covers, and I'm absolutely appalled that their site did not come up in Google when I was searching for a new mattress before - this video only came up when I decided that the only way I would be able to afford a new, HEALTHY mattress would be to make my own, and searched for a "how to"!

Well.... that would be extreme. And 100% of mattress makers would tell you NO. But.... since I experiment with all my fills quite frequently, I just may have done the same. However, the key to not ruining your latex is to make sure it dries quickly and out of the sun. Out of doors may be a great place for it to dry after it has been sopped up thoroughly with towels, but dry it in the shade.

@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 7 лет назад
The Quilted Wool Ticking is beautiful ticking with a very conventional appearance. It is simple enough to make your assembly simple and thick enough to provide an extra barrier to the latex from heat, light and air, all elements that eventually cause degradation. The Knit Ticking (or Twill as I used in the video) and the wool batting are the flexible, less expensive option to the Quilted Ticking. You still get the wool and you don't pay for the stitching of quilting or the extra layer of fabric needed for the quilt, but you have to not mind a thin layer twisting into the latex (keeps it from shifting) and having its raw form accessible if you ever unzipped your mattress. The wool and knit ticking is slightly more flexible than the Quilted Ticking.

@heavnbound
@heavnbound 6 лет назад
There are many alternatives to carpet: porcelain, ceramic, hardwood (ie pine, bamboo) flooring, etc and some are very affordable. Carpet as you know is highly toxic. We had carpet in our home when we moved in and experienced fatigue, weakness, nasal congestion, even dry skin almost immediately. Had it replaced with Cali Bamboo and Mohawk wood design tile and our health improved dramatically. Night and day. When you remove all the carpet and the toxic foam underneath it, you will be amazed at how much lighter the air feels and the landfill looking waste that is on the side of your home or on the back of a truck to the dump where it belongs! I can't stress enough! Along with your mattress, flooring is the most important decision you can make to improve your health. Tile and porcelain can be purchased at a very cheap price. Best health to you!

would this be comfortable enough for an adult visiting? Like a temporary mattress one could use?
@L.J.01

What if you layered all the wool on top? Would this make a softer bed? Or do you need to flip these mattresses like commercial beds?
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 6 лет назад
Adding all the wool on top would be capture some of the feel of a wool topper. It would add that consistent, soft feel that a single sheet of fabric or wool impart and would soften some of the bounciness of the latex. Latex can be very cradling, especially in the soft layers and the wool will prevent some of that enveloping feel and give its own more conventional, fluffy feel. To get the most fluffy or cloud like feel, use a wool topper instead, as that fabric is loosely tufted and does not constrain the wool the way a ticking would.

Thanks, but you didn't say If these beds are designed to be flipped?
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 6 лет назад
If you layer the same layers of latex on the top and bottom of the mattress, then you have made a flippable mattress. If you layer a soft, comfort layer on the top and a firmer, supportive layer on the bottom, you have made a mattress that still may be flipped, but certainly won't feel the same when the layers are reversed.

On of my family members is highly allergic to latex and foam finding a natural bedding without those has shown to be very difficult. Is there anyway to use 100% cotton or wool without sacrificing thickness?
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 5 лет назад
Yes, most definitely, wool and/or cotton can be used to make a mattress. We have both available in our shop and would be happy to instruct you how to make a mattress with those supplies. The basic guide is very simple, purchase a ticking, usually our Twill Ticking. Unzip it, layer your fill inside, zip it shut and tuft it to keep the fill from shifting. Expect a firm mattress with an option to add something like a wool topper to add some softness.

Does the wool reduce the heat trapping effect latex mattresses tend to get?
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 7 лет назад
I'm not sure that your premise is correct. Most people would not say that latex tends to trap heat; though that could be said of memory foam since it is designed to soften at 85 degrees. While latex has the best airflow of all bedding foams, it is more dense than a coil mattress as it is foam.
@Slicklickz

Latex is basically the only foam in the bedding industry that doesn't trap heat.Latex is rubber foam,all the other foams are plastic foams and do trap heat.

Buy what you've said in the video 7:12-7:14 ➡️ Saving the cost and labor for the stitching but you're still getting wool ⬅️ Does that mean if buying a knit ticking covers that the wool will be included?
@Diynaturalbedding

Our quilted ticking comes with the wool stitched to the fabric. This ticking is the strongest, the most finished looking and the most expensive. However if want a similar product but choose the DIY route, there is no stitching, merely laying the wool batting around the latex inside the knit ticking.

Could the wool fiber possibly penetrate the zippered enclosure ? Wool tends to be a bit itchy for me and was wondering if cotton could be an alternative? I noticed you are out of stock on cotton.
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 3 года назад
Cotton batting could be wrapped around the latex to protect it from the elements. Yes, we are out of stock on the cotton batting (though not any of our cotton fabrics). There is a term for wool penetrating the fabric and that is migration. Yes, wool can migrate through fabrics with lower thread counts than 230. Not only do we not have a fabric with that low of a thread count, all of our fabrics have been tested with the wool and no migration is present.

One problem for me is that our mattress size is something called an Olympic Queen. It's 6" wider than regular queen and is the absolute perfect size for us and our room. Would you be able make that custom size? Also, what about wool allergies? Is that common? And I always thought wool was very warm. I live in Hawaii and the cooler the better! Also, do you ship to Hawaii? Mahalo for any extra info!

@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 5 лет назад
The wool softens the bounce of the latex and protects it from sunlight and body heat which can cause it to degrade. I find that one batt of wool makes a slight difference, two batts is much more noticeable softness. We can send you a sample of the wool if you need to test it. Most people would say the wool is odorless, but burying your nose in it might let you notice its slight natural smell.

How many yards of wool you recommend for a twin , also can this method also work to make a futon with out the latex ?
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 3 года назад
To create a mattress, first determine the depth. Usual is 6" +, though you could go down to 4" as a minimum, say for a lightweight adult or child. Then run the numbers: Wool batting is 1/2" deep per layer so, depth (let's say 6") x .5 = 12,. so at least 12 layers of wool. Then width of mattress (38") x 12 = 456 inches of wool. We sell by the yard, so break it down: 456/36 = 12.7 or 13 yards of batting. Yes! you can definitely make a futon this way too. Another way for calculation is to use the wool flake (not batting) and our calculator here. www.diynaturalbedding.com/product/custom-pillow-fill/ Make sure to choose mattress shape when calculating.

Hi there! Will natural latex, organic cotton ticking and farm wool be ok in a sailboat? All should fare well in a warmer, humid environment? We have two bench type seats and two or three bunks/births. As we get further along in our refit, I'll contact through your site, as well. Thank you!
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 4 года назад
I know that there are people who use latex, wool and cotton on their boats. While I have not heard personal feedback, I know that airflow is more important for latex than is humidity of lack thereof, so I think that the typical support of slats and fresh air would provide a suitable environment.

I am making a twin 3 in latex bed, if I only get one layer of wool batting per your suggestion, do I choose 3 lbs? And then what depth of twill ticking should I order? (3", or thicker depth in order to accommodate wool)? Thank you!
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 7 лет назад
It is a good idea to leave space in your ticking (zippered case) for the wool batting as then the wool batting can retain some of its fluffy feel. I suggest leaving 1/2" for each layer of 3 lb. batt of wool. Keep in mind that wrapping your latex with wool on top and bottom is two layers of wool, thus occupying 1" of ticking. If you use our thicker 4 lb. wool batting, 3/4" per layer works well. Our Twill Ticking is sold in 1" increments already so it is easy to choose your preferred height. The other tickings can be custom sewn for your preferred height if you email me for the custom sewing link. dbrenton [@] diynaturalbedding.com

Have you considered wool or cotton or even kapok? All of those are natural fills, that admittedly are firmer than latex can be, but for some can be very comfortable. For example, a wool topper on a wool mattress is similar in firmness to a medium piece of latex on top of an extra firm.

What size natural latex do you use for a huge adult person? Why not use a cotton sheet to contain the wool as in making a square pillow? Can you sew (like a saddle stitch) with jute into the latex to keep wool from moving around?
@Diynaturalbedding
@Diynaturalbedding 3 года назад
When selecting depth of latex, the general rule of thumb is 3" per 90 lbs. The heavier you are the firmer you want to choose because it will softer to you than to a lighter person as you sink in farther. More information on choosing firmness is available here in The Banana Test www.diynaturalbedding.com/the-banana-test/. Yes, you could separate the wool from the latex with a cotton sheet, but then you have slippery wool. Either choose that you don't mind some wool fibers migrating into the latex or choose the quilted ticking which has the wool quilted into between two layers of fabric. The wool needs to either stick to the latex or be quilted or tufted to keep it from shifting. The Quilted Ticking is available here. www.diynaturalbedding.com/product/quilted-ticking/ One or two wraps of wool will not move around or shift. If you are making a topper with 3 or more layers of wool, you will want to tuft it. More info on that process here. www.diynaturalbedding.com/tuft-wool-mattress-or-topper/
