Great video, but you keep costing me money on STL models!! ;) I think the biggest stall I hit was not understanding the "bottom up" methodology of CAD rendering. Your initial explanation and illustration of how the components being brought in out of sequence went a good distance to explain that. More importantly, how to fix it via "move to" and the outside "click" to enable it (MS Powerpoint/ Visio, etc just does it the instant it's selected) Knowing the sequence of processing for the component stack is super important. Btw, I think those dust devils you saw on the surface in that one toolpath generation were simply video card artifacts, hence they disappeared on subsequent runs. Appreciate the tip on shortening the calc time, I have a monster CPU and memory originally built for 3D terrain mapping. It generally shrugs off these calc paths but after about 3-4 3D inclusions into a design, it starts taking a minute. Being able to speed it up enables me to make learning mistakes quicker (joke).
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 3 года назад
My friend, learning mistakes is how we get better. Sorry for costing you money. Vectric should love me for this one. I wish they'd call and make an offer for something) Looks like I'll have to start buzzing them. I figured the little bugs were just CPU harrassments.

Hey again Garrett! So I know you did this video quit sometime ago now and I’m only commenting because I’m actually watching them regardless of age because they do help a bunch. So before I comment I’ll say this is strictly to help out hopefully, a suggestion or helpful tip rather “if needed” that is. Again love the videos I’ve seen QUIT a few lol👍👍! So for Thai video specifically and I believe there was one or two others I believe where you had an extended period of time where you and I say this as a guess and I could be wrong, where you were waiting for the carve time to calculate. So I don’t know if you know or not but you can speed these clips in your videos up significantly just in those parts “if you wanted” I do a lot of video editing myself and so just wanted to share this with you. Again I still watch them regardless. Just trying to give a little help or return the favor rather. Thanks again for the videos👍👍

When I saw you were making this video with a model from Design and Make I got super excited. I bought several models/hack from D&M. The most fustrainting part is try to download the actual model and for it to appear on in VCarve under the model tab. I go to the email link that D&M sent me which opens the unzip application (NCH Software) but have no luck in extracting the files. On the D&M help site it talks about an installer but I have yet to find it. I do have a few hacks that made it into the correct folder/tab in VCare…but don’t ask me how I did it …lol. One more thing I’ve watch the video several times and pick up bits here-and-there. While you were waiting to VCare to calculate a toolpath and you said that joke about carpal-tunnel I LMSO cause I had just had carpal-tunnel surgery the week before lol. - love it

I know this is an older video, so hopefully you see this. Towards the end where you changed to bit to a 1/8ballnose in order to speed up the cut time, is there a way to do a ruff pass with the 1/8bn and then a final pass with the 6 degree? Maybe by adding another toolpath with different parameters? I'm new to cnc so maybe I'm completely off...
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft Год назад
Steve, you can do exactly that. Try using the "3d roughing" toolpath with the 1/8 ballnose. That will give you exactly what you are looking for.

Design & Make is owned by Vectric and the same people making the models for D&M ( Todd Bailey ) also made most of the models that are in the VCarve and Aspire software. They are of very high quality. Your model resolution when you first setup the job should have been set to very high for better results, not standard.

I always thought that this extra step was to take a load off of the finer finishing tool. Do you ever run a roughing tool path using a 1/4" ball or em? My tapered fine bit has some time on it. I will be getting your stouter 6.2 bit.

Too speed up your cutting time change your plunge rate to the same as your feed rate. The reason for this change is that in 3D cutting your machine can only go as fast as the slowest axis, which in your example is the Plunge or Z Axis...I would suggest using 60 feed and 60 plunge. Also, it is a known fact that the clock is not correct in estimating the cutting time. You first need to correctly set your rapid rate in the clock estimate. The rapid rate is not the same as the feed rate.
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 3 года назад
60/60 would be good. I will move to that when my more robust machine comes in. Yeah, I found out about the clock estimate. It is usually understated. Please share how you set the clock for more accurate time.
@mezalick
@mezalick 3 года назад

Expect it to arrive in a week or so. I will have to post setup and first use review when I get it. Note: it is a 3-in-one device, small format: 180mm cube. Thanks for such a detailed video. Im looking at purchasing Vcarve Desktop and thought they limited you to 1 outside STL file to be used. Ive been using Fusion360 for a few years for 3d printing and just a recently got a CNC router. While I can manage the CAD side with Fusion it looks like Vcarve is better suited for the design layout and toolpath. Did Vectric change the STL limit or did I miss something??

@IDCWoodcraft

SteveSpears-xg6ze, Vectric Pro and Aspire have different features and capabilities. Aspire is more advanced and can handle more complex designs than Pro. In the video, I am using Aspire, but Pro can still do similar work, just with some limitations. Don't worry about being behind, you can still create great projects with Pro once you get the hang of it!

To get the detail where you need it, I have been playing with creating multiple vector boundaries and running different tools for each one. e.g. Create a boundary around the eagle and use the 1 mm tool there and use 1/8 on the rest. Unfortunately, the 1/8 toolpath still seems to run into the eagle as well - not sure how to avoid that...

question, could you run an extra tool path in the beginning to cut a bulk of the wood, like a clearing path, and then keep the detail ball nose bit. Would that save some time, roughing it in, and then allowing the fine bit to come in and finish the 3d part of the project?
