In this video, you'll learn how to turn an inexpensive cut of wood into a stained, calligraphy sign! I'll teach you how to stain your wood, measure out and mark your spacing for your calligraphy, and the best tools to use to get amazing results.
NOTE: THIS VIDEO IS OLD. I have since discovered how much better paint pens work on wood when you apply a polyurethane sealant on top of the stain BEFORE lettering!

Hey, Becca. I really love this. It showed me that you can take some inexpensive materials and add a lot of your TALENT to it and make a beautiful sign. You make it look SOOOO easy. Of course, it looks so easy because of your talent and experience but it makes me believe that a newbie like me can do it, too. It may take me a while but you make me believe that with practice and experience, I CAN DO I T TOO ! Thanks for all of your great videos! Mike Gross

THANK YOUUUUUUUUU FOR NOT EDITING OUT THE WHITE PEN SPRAYING EVERYWHERE LOL. I am realizing what a dang freak I am. I have been doing lettering for a couple years now and am just now finding you and going through all of your videos start to finish and my biggest takeaway is that I dont need to be such a freak about perfection. I get so stressed out when stuff like that happens!!!

Hey Becca - I tried using the Sharpie oil-based marker on a small 10 x 10 wood plaque. besides the fact that the wood really soaked it up - I was wondering what size marker you used. I tried medium and fine and wasn't able to get thin enough lines to do faux calligraphy.

Hi Becca, I'm enjoying your videos on calligraphy (I'm revisiting some of the past so to speak) and I have some projects coming up (wooden banners for the most part) and I'm dealing with "letter spacing". To get the layout right, I need to make provisions for letters (horizontal spacing as well as letter heights), and I recall some terms from years ago when I worked for a phototypsetting company (EM's, EN's and so on having to do with letter widths). I'm having some trouble trying to figure out just where my "strokes" (upstrokes, downstrokes, ascending/descending, etc) land within a given letter space. Do you have any suggestions on just where, within a given letter space to place the strokes that make up a letter? The objective is to make the letters and the spaces between them consistent in a pre-defined banner length.

probably "calligraphy/faux calligraphy/hand lettering" since the upstrokes and downstrokes are thinner and thicker!

Hi Becca! Quick question, do you also stain the rear of the wood?
@TheHappyEverCrafter

You don't have to! It depends on how it will be displayed. Just keep in mind it'll add to your dry time. :)

That would be my question, too. You have to wonder if the sign might get banged around on its way to wherever it's going. Also the couple may want it preserved for their first anniversary party.

Hey Becca! I noticed you didn't seal the sign prior to lettering. Wouldn't your lettering bleed? Or is it because you used an oil based paint pen?

If I wanted a wood sign with shiny clear coat on it, would I do that before or after lettering?
@aditsingh893
@aditsingh893 4 года назад
I guess after... After the paint dries completely, leave it for an extra day, and then you can put a couple coats of glossy varnish to make it shiny
