A breakdown of what makes Last Chance U one of the very best documentary series on Netflix right now. There’s so much to love about this show and in this video I get into what I think are the top 3 reasons it’s a cut above almost everything else out there.

So true. Being able to find the best story even in boring life is the key to a good film (not just documentary). And it may seem boring to you, but it could be an entirely different perspective for someone else. Thanks for the good tips and inspiration as always.

Watched almost all your videos, and you are doing a really good job explaing documentary things. Usually I watch others and they evasive about the topics they talk about, not you. The way you explain things is simple, straight to the point, you juste use words not blurry concepts, and it changes it all. So thank you. Do you have an email where we can ask you thing without spamming the comment section ? Thank you

Luc, love your videos and tips. It’s helping my new business as content creation is such a large part but I really want to stand out. So please keep it up! I was wondering what your opinion on Drive to Survive is? I feel like it’s shallow from a cinematography stand point but, correct me if I’m wrong, very prominent from an editing stand point

My God, you were so right, Last Chance U is amazing good! Wow! The storytelling is dope and the cinematography is next level, just beautiful. My favorite is the intro. It is so powerful. Here is an interview with the DP Terry Zumalt and 1st AC Devin Keebler discussing their experience shooting LAst Chance U.

Key: STORY. Being a solution consultant my job was telling stories rather than what was cool. COOL COSTS MONEY! My dream is to complete a full documentary and editing short form commercials, youtube, etc over the past 15 years, I feel like finally I can. My point here is your insight from a docu filmmaker is super helpful for someone working to get to that next level. Thank you Luc!

Awesome content! Thank you! Question: I’m about to travel to Mexico with camera gear -drone included. What insurance would you recommend? Thank you
@LucForsyth
@LucForsyth Год назад
I think it depends where in the world you live, but in Canada Front Row is a good provider. Personally my insurance is designed for losing everything at once, like if someone breaks into the production vehicle, so it has a high limit but a high deductible. Not worth it for a single broken lens, but good safety for losing everything!

Hi Luc! Love the channel, have been binge watching just about everything in the last few weeks. If you might read this, I have a question to which you might not have an answer (as it depends on the user) But I really want to get more into documentary filming, but I'm torn between the FX3 and the FX6. I was just wondering which camera you would lean towards more often, which one is your go to camera if you don't shoot a big doc on your FX9. I like the IBIS on the FX3, but de internal ND's and now Picture Cache on the FX6 have me doubting again. Was curious about your own experience, cheers.
@LucForsyth
@LucForsyth Год назад
I really like the fx9 and fx3 combo, but if I only had to have one camera, I would take the fx6 I think. It's a bit easier to build out than the fx3, and the variable ND is, IMO, more useful than the IBIS. I think the FX6 can be stripped down to a really good handheld size, or rigged out into a shoulder set up depending on what you need. The only problem is finding one these days!

I just came to your channel VIDEOS page to search for tips on telling the documentary stories. I found this one because it's the most recent. I'm wondering what you do when you first decide to tackle some story you want to capture ... or is that even up to you? Are you doing work-for-hire or are you the producer, director, camera and post? I'm looking for ideas about how to plan what to shoot when we travel. And then how to carry the plan out and how to be flexible when new opportunities jump out at you. I seem to be asking you a lot of questions to fit my video aspirations.
@LucForsyth
@LucForsyth 2 года назад
It depends - when I'm hired as a DP it's almost always someone else's story. Sometimes I work on my own stuff, but not nearly as much. It takes so much time and energy to develop a story that unless you really, really care about it the work is just too much. SO I'd say about 75% of my work is on other people's stuff and maybe 25% my own. Best advice is to only jump into a project of your own if you really care enough to see it through to the end!
