How many solos have I f-cked up by trying to choreograph a series of all my favorite killer licks - only to get lost and then not know HOW to end. This quick lesson does a good job of soloing from a simple phrase and developing it along the way.
Brian thanks for sharing and for watching! Licks are the way to negative creativity. Focusing on bite-sized phrases will get us so much more mileage. Thanks for the kind words my friend. Hope to see you soon 🤙

Manuel! I was just thinking about you 2 days ago and wondering how Jazz drumming is treating you. Would love to connect again. Feel free to email me whenevahs. Keep swinging buddy!
Thanks for your comment and for watching! For me a drum lick is a pattern that is orchestrated the same way across the kit over and over. It's a static pattern. Musical phrases on the other hand, are a series of rhythms that can be orchestrated infinite ways to respond to the music. Phrases are also improvised (created on the spot) and most often based on the music being played in the moment. A drum lick tends to fit only into a very specific musical context and is not flexible enough to fit improvised changes in the music. Hope that's a clearer picture of my thinking. At any rate, keep swinging 🤙
