Dear Julia, I don't know your tutorials for much long, but I have to say THANK YOU for all od them. You are a great teacher, your ability to explain things, postures, angles, movements, why this or that... is incredibly good. I'm coming back to hobby ("figure") skating after many years, self taught, because there are no classes in our town, and I feel so "looking forward" to every next lesson after each and every of your vids! It's incredible, that happy feeling you are able to spread 👍 I'd like to be inspiration for my children, they seem to like skating after all, I'm really happy for that ❤️ and there's why your tutorials are so helpful as well. I can show them your videos and explain them what are you talking about (we are Czech) and even show them something by myself. Or help them at least, to try. So, thank you, you are our star ❤️

I can't tell you how many coaches I've had whose one-foot spin instructions equated to "spin, then pick up one foot," and when you can't do it, they don't know why. This explains each element so much more clearly for someone without 10 years of muscle memory.

Coach Julia- “Thank You“ so much for the time and dedication you’ve applied in providing these priceless tutorials for our “Passion“ in artistic skating. Although I’m strictly an instructor/competitor on Quad Roller Skates, and started skating age 5 in 1970 (ice skates-Hockey) competing by age 9, and at age 14 skated professionally in Patrick Swayzes’ Cameo “SkateTown USA“, I hung up ky skates right after that filming and never stepped into a boot until recently(May 2022). One would think after being absent from skating for 42 years, you’d need retraining from beginner level!? I was really surprised to find my hours of training were for a reason- “Muscle Memory!“ In fact, within 3 weeks of confidence rebuilding, I was airbourne again pushing my nerves into consistent double axels and flips. With old age comes stagnant muscle growth. We can only “Tone“ whats present, not grow or expand what no longer replaces the worn and torn. This Tutorial helped me, which helps my base of 130 students, hone in on the key areas of our body that facilitate easier adjustments to weight transitions on edges. How crucial our setup into execution is to balancing the follow through. “How Consistency in Repetition of Correct Action Produces Effortless Results CONSTANTLY...or as mentioned Muscle Memory your mind and body utilize for frequent motions!“ Like getting out of bed and standing up. We don’t anylize that process. We initiate the mind to signal the body to perform a function...effortlessly! Looking forward to meeting and personally thanking you at a competition down the road. Geno W. Hardin Coach/Instructor Parkview Skate OR Wow! Coach is really on top of her folkowers posts! Less than 10 minute reaction...That’s Dedication to Sustaining our Sport! 👏👏👸⛸🛼

Thank you a lot for this video! I've been figure skating for a bit more than half a year and I managed to learn toe-loop and salchow (not perfectly) but with spins I've always had the feeling that I am just staying in the same place and never managed to get more than 4 rotations in a simple 1-foot spin. Whenever I practiced with the coach, I was told to just try again and again but nobody explained me these important tips that you mention here!

Your tutorial has been super helpful to me, and your explanations and demonstrations are so clear to follow. I used to learn figure skating when I was young, and I picked it up again recently as a hobby. I watch your tutorials multiple times before I go skating. I try to memorize each step by mirroring your movements on the ground, while watching. It's also helpful to revisit the same tutorial after I try them on the ice. Thank you Julia!

Thank you so much for this. I can’t skate for my life, but my 8 year old loves figure skating even though she struggles a lot with motor skills. She’s trying to learn a proper entrance but is getting so frustrated that she cannot seem to get the hang of it. Her coaches show her a spin, but don’t really help her with what she is doing wrong so she has learnt it the wrong way know, since she can’t do that half heart shape she takes an extra step. Hope that I might help her now with knowing this theoretically at least.

@@CoachJulia hey Julia.I’m not a skater but I love watching this sport, I actually tried it at 12 going to figure skating classes but realized I wasn’t skilled for it when I had to repeat the curse of basics one if you don’t pass basics 1 at first it means this sport is not for you. Anyway I’ve seen how we rarely see now the scratch forward spin, the last skater I ember doing it was Sasha Cohen. There are also many spirals not done anymore like the one where skaters go in one foot and the other leg way up like making a split. Again it was something we saw a lot in the 2000s but that one has stopped happening. Do you know why ?

I got my first pair of ice skates for Christmas this year! I have NEVER gone ice skating before so I had no idea what I was doing. I was so bummed because rinks around me were closed because of covid, and my pond isn’t frozen over. But today I found this spot in my yard that is usually like a swamp. It’s frozen over! So I have a tiny little area to skate! So today I went out with my mom and held onto her as I went skating for the first time. I’m pretty proud of myself, I was out in the cold for two hours and I can skate forward pretty okay, I can make myself turn around, and I kind of know how to go backwards a little bit. I won’t be able to do this yet, but I’m going to work towards it!

Thank you so much for breaking this down. One of the problems I have with skating is fear. I get so nervous on the ice and everything tenses up. It’s getting better little by little but it’s still frustrating. I’ve been skating since around June and I’m an adult skater. Any advice?
@JourneyDrummer1972
@JourneyDrummer1972 Год назад
I know this is 2 years late in offering advice, hooefully you’ve overcome fears and are still skating. If not, like many who give in to fear as excuse for failure, get your skates tuned up and check your fears at the door implementing this philosophy in EVERY DIFICULT CHALLENGE! A: In order to succeede, we MUST FAIL reoeatedly. “The two experiences are absolutely vital for PROGRESS!“ B: “EMBRACE YOUR FEARS As OPPORTUNITY to IMPROVE and ELIMINATE what is technically Self Doubt- or INHIBITIONS! You conculude any new action as a failure because you doubt your own abilities before even applying effort trying new things. It’s your way of staying confined in your comfort zone and deflecting any attempt to release you from inprisonment. C: Study the GOOD as a seed you’ve planted. Be patient as you nurture it, manicure it’s growth, and reap it’s full growth bounty! If this doesn’t help, findna “POSITiVE MENTOR“ who will help eliminate all your negativity Brau!

I have learnt a lot of basic moves and watch many tutorials, but I keep feeling really scared when trying something new.

You can tell yourself that even olympic figure skaters fall and they still keep going. Falling is normal and you should teach urself that. I like to tell myself that if i fall i can get up and should stop worring about falling and fun skating

Thanks coach! Worked on your 2 ft spins a few months now ready to hit the ice at 2 today to practice. Any advice if I'm losing balance and fall? Don't want to hold back because of fear of falling. Fyi I don't fall for many many sessions at a time, probably too scared to😊

your tutorials are so thorough and detailed! I’ve just started ice skating, entirely for fun so that I can jam out on my off-ice skates! unfortunately, lessons are so incredibly expensive and im not sure if ill get to learning spins before my classes are over. if I learn the basics, do you think these spins are things I can learn on my own with these videos? thank you so much in advance 🤍

Probably. You'll get better instruction from RU-vid than you will from any in person coach. You'll need to your own initiative since you won't have the "I must learn this by Thursday" syndrome. In some cases a student might need an in person coach to correct something oddball like a worn out or poor fitting or cheapo skate, misaligned blade, flat feet, etc, that might prevent success without in person help.

This video is SO helpful and came at the perfect time!! I’m so glad I found your channel! Question- when I push off onto my left outside edge, I have a really hard time keeping my right arm back. My right side tries to come around on its own, ruining the spin before it even starts. Any advice on how to work on this? Thank you!!

So glad you found my video helpful! That exercise I go over where you hold your entrance edge is going to be really helpful foe this. I encourage you to practice holding that edge over and over so that you can develop those muscles.

Is there a video how to balance on 1 foot ???
@sarahb2757

Ahhh when doing the spin, especially on a one foot entrance, I heavily lean into the inside edge and it kills my spin. Even after getting new sturdy boots and tying them tightly, it didn’t really help. Would there be any way to fix this? Thank you!

Can I do this in hockey skates? I can do outside three turns and forwards/backwards power pulls. I’d love to surprise the figure skaters by doing a spin. 😂

This is a fantastic tutorial! I just seem to have trouble finding my rocker as, during my windup, I seem to slide sideways on my blade! They have been freshly sharpened, so that's no longer the issue, but I can't seem to wind my "three turn" into a tighter circle as I at one point just slide sideways at which point I have to start spinning (otherwise I come to a stand still) but I instantly hit my toe pick. Any tips on how to hold the windup properly without sliding? The two times I actually managed I instantly hit my rocker instead of my toe pick and I'd love to finally spin properly.

Could you maybe explain or make a video how to do this spin from backward crossovers ? (like you do at the end of the video) because your left arm swings over in a different way then!

Another great video! I've been trying to do one foot spins since the beginning of the year and am now only just getting a propper entry and multiple rotations. @Coach Julia one of my coaches recently spotted that i wasn't getting a deep enough outside edge and either I would try to force the 3-turn too early or by the time the 3-turn naturally hapenned I would be going too slow to get much rotational momentum. He fixed hits by getting me to look to my left as I pushed off into the entry glide which natually got me to go into a deeper edge. I noticed you did this as well in the video but probably you don't even think about it. Also holding that right shoulder back all the way up until the 3-turn happens naturally stopped my premature rotation.

Sounds like you are working with a coach who is doing a great job evaluating your skating and making great suggestions! That is awesome. Thanks for sharing what you have learned with the other skaters here!

So helpful, I’ve been trying for months and never manage, I struggle to get onto the rocker properly it always scratches and I thought it was my blades but it’s probably me 😅 the spinning foot is it supposed to be on an inside edge whilst spinning so the toe pointed in slightly?

I know this is an older video, but here we are. Spins tend to be my kryptonite. Part of the problem is I'm "neurodivergent" and have issues with proprioception. And while it's not an entirely insurmountable problem--I'm currently working on the first half of LTSUSA "Free Skate 1" elements--it does make things more difficult (taken me 4 years of hard work to get here). Have you worked with people on the spectrum or otherwise with proprioception issues? Is there anything other than "keep working at it" one can do to get past them?
