Get yourself some 10lb bumper plates to put on the bar so you can start easily with a proper deadlift position to start the movement. I’m not far behind you in age and I recently added this great full body exercise to my program. ☝️🥴👍

I wanted to combine two exercises this morning to save time - Dead lift and shoulder press. It was amazing! Then, I figured it probably had a name... And it's this - I LOVE clean & press.

If you want to do a strict press and not knee drive I learned a great technique from Lucain Herrick to squeeze your buttcherks as tight as you can and it takes off the tension in your lower back.

Yeah dont talk at all about how to properly set up where your feet should be, how far forward you should be before you pull, or tightening your core to help brace your lower back, or how to engage your lats for stabalization. dont worry about any of that because this isnt a super technical lift at all. just walk up to this bar pick it up off the ground and lift it over your head you totally wont get hurt... Probably... Well im pretty sure.

I believe that the only muscles that aren't involved in this exercise are the chest muscles, so it might be a good idea to combine this exercise with bench press, or maybe alternate between those exercises during different workouts.

This exercise almost feels like a superset in a way, since it is kind of like a combination of Power Cleans and Overhead Press. In fact, I have noticed that I seem to be able to lift slightly _heavier_ weights during this exercise than during a separate Overhead Press move, which is pretty weird.

Could it be the case that with this exercise you're getting the transfer of kinetic energy from the first part of the movement into the overhead press, thus making the press feel "easier" than pressing the same weight from a static start position? Ie: momentum is doing part of the 'lifting' in place of raw muscle activation

Do we put the weight all the way down to the floor at the end of each rep or let it hand at the knees I’ve seen ppl doing both

Not weird. In a regular overhead press you aren't using your legs to drive up the weight. In this you are. You can definitely put on way more weight

​@@kingpotato7183 Yes, that is true. It seemed to me as if a longer range of motion would be more exhausting, but it does of course make sense that the activation of the leg muscles give a lot of extra momentum.

I prefer to do a strict press after the power clean, instead of a push press. More core stability, more power, more control.

I’ve been doing it that way too.. wondering now if I’ll bend the knees now though, give his way a try, because I do worry about hurting my back with that last part.

You can be training cleans more efficiently though. For instance I can clean (and jerk) 185 but I can only strict press 135 so it just makes sense to train them as different movements...

You don't start an RDL from the floor, it's done from the rack. Straight leg deadlifts are done from the floor.

Wouldn't this exercise be more effective for the shoulders than Overhead Press? I mean, if it allows you to lift heavier weights than in Overhead Press, shouldn't this then activate the shoulders during the "overhead press part" of the motion a bit more?

Literally anyone can crank out a sh1tty compound exercise that can't be overloaded for any progression. Let's do deadlift shoulder shrugs next. Great posterior chain activation because your traps will always be able to lift more than your glutes and hams..... Or how about the bench skull crusher combo? What a great way to build that pec deck, because we all know that your triceps are the largest and strongest muscle in the body. Squatmornings? That surely won't hurt your back or regressively overload your quad and posterior chain. All joking aside, if you are going to teach power clean, teach it in a manner where it can be overloaded as the exercise was intended. Or don't teach it at all. This particular goof will lead to thousands of people doing hybrid upright row/arm pull with that extra chiseling movement to the rack position. I shouldn't have to say that this is going to fook someone's shoulder up. But it most certainly will.

You made this out to be much simpler than it is. Especially if you are new to lifting. A big part of the clean and should be emphasized is the momentum. There needs to be a big shrug and get into the clean position with the barbell on your delts and clavicle.

Frank Gilligan nothing much, his legs were a little turned in and wonky. It’s not rocket science. Deadlift plus reverse curl plus shoulder press. Only thing that could be wrong was he did a push press style by using leg assistance. That is optional, it just doesn’t offer quite the same benefit as a strict or military shoulder press. Your already getting assistance from momentum and speed so a push press shouldn’t be necessary unless that is your aim.
