When tree branches fall and hit roofs, they can sometimes puncture the roof deck and create roof leaks. This is how we do a temporary repair to avoid further damage.

Only the second guy I've seen who know what he is doing regarding a temp roof repair. Nice work.

Thank you so much! My roof is leaking and my roofing company is being slow so I will make a temporary fix using the felt top roofing nails!

Awesome :) :) There's a hole in the roof of a house we're buying. A very neglected house. Probably needs an entirely new roof. But for now, we went over there and poured a whole can of flex seal over the damaged area. Then also covered it as shown here. Super helpful DIY repair!

In the uk we have concrete roof tiles. They last for about 50 yrs minimum. Pretty hardy compared to these shingles you use. You’d only put that on a garden shed here.

Im sure them concrete roof tiles wont break when a 40 lb tree branch fall on it. 😮

When he says, let's get goin, he ain't fooling. Good to know about those waterproof nails. Something I use to patch a roof is Peel and Seal Aluminum which is self-adhesive.

I’m curious. If the hole was small, say 6-8” in diameter, why couldn’t this be a permanent repair or at least a 2-3 year repair? If the whole goal is to keep water out, this accomplishes that yes?

Awesome!!! Thank you! We have been preoccupied with repairs and improvements to our house since we bought it a couple years ago. A week ago, I only just turned my attention to the 12x9 shed in the back of the property. After lots of investigation, the shed is totally worth saving, but the roof is SHOT, with holes in the corners. I am nervous about starting a big project now because it's going to get cold and snowy here very soon. I'll use this method to cover the corners. I'll take on the big tasks in the spring.

You are awesome! Perfect for me. Mine is in a valley between two roofs so I have three sides I can tuck it under. I'm putting some plywood across the place the roof rotted. There are several holes where the water may stand otherwise. Now, to go get those tacks.

I see you are a good man, craftsman, salesman, and loyal vender of services. (PS Charge more for new customers vs less for loyalty,, e.g. a coupon your customer can give to a neighbor which turns into a full re-roof for both making you money.)

Would it have been easier and more wind resistant to work a few strips of aluminum (old fascia), under a few rows of shingles to repair that hole?

Yes 😆

Just get a small sheet and stick it in above the hole and past it

I work at roofing and we only have fascia on hand if we are shingling a full roof, but it would only be enough for the customers roof. Any scraps would be just thrown out at the end of each job. As for underlayment, we always have that on hand since it comes in huge rolls and we always end up with extra after doing a full roof. Lastly, those nails he’s using help with wind resistance. The plastic caps prevent the fabric from tearing. Cheers!

So many holes in the poor roof from nails to unnecessary, huge area around actual hole. That means the final patch will be times bigger then it should.

Three reasons 1) she need to have a piece of osb plywood laid down for a permanent repair and this has to be fastened to the truss underneath which is 16 inches (std) from each other. Recommend adding a cross piece of 2x4 for added strength 2) water diverting - water seeps in from the edges/sides of the underlayment as well as shingles - that's why shingles are layered staggered at least 3 inches (depending on roof slope lowest slope 3/12 recommend 6 inches stagger) - unless you tar a wad load around the four edges - but tar does not stick too well in the rain and dries and crack from hot sun in a few weeks - roofing company always recommend overlapping sides by 6 inches to avoid leaking (since hole is 6 inches, he needed 18 inches in width) 3)wind - to avoid winds from lifting the underlayment off you need to fasten every 6 inches
