This is a demonstration of the safest(least violent) way to cut a vertical log from a tree with a crane. This method balances the weight of the log and allows you to cut straight through the piece without pinching your bar.
Be very careful doing that with a shackle. It’s very unlikely with such short load suspension times, but I’ve seen straps undo a shackle before because it was against the pin and spun it. It may take a little longer, but if you’re going to connect two slings together like that I’d use a clevis.
Or just roll the pin into the eye of the other sling. You are right though, if the sling runs on the pin it can unscrew it. Personally I douldnt rig anything like that if it has any chance of slipping off. Best thing to do would be to choke each leg.
Love the videos! Learn so much off of you and cant wait for more, be awesome if you made a video of how you got into the tree work life style, what you had to learn and how/where you started the journey
Sorry to have to explain to you what pressure is versus tension!, pressure is when you are exerting a pushing force as in hydraulic pressure, water pressure, pushing the cars bumper pressure and tension is when you are pulling on something as in putting "Tension on a wire rope" to tighten it up, one does not put pressure on a wire rope unless you are crimping the ends with a swage, BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESSURE AND TENSION. Now if the crane operator had a lift force indicator then you could say put 4000lbs of pull or tension on the line but one would nott 4000lbs of pressure on the line, just sayin.
Awesome video! Very informative. I’ve only ever used choker/shackles. Endless loops look effective though. Any reasons why you would choose one over the other?
Am I seeing this right; It looks like it's a rope inside a protective sleeve to prevent abrasion of the rope. Where can I buy these crane slings and shackles?
Sick! You can get smooth with a single choker, too. No need for wedges and saw won't get pinched. Also, you can guess the weight a little better. Put the clevis on the back side, ball plum with center of gravity, start cut on clevis side. If you cut towards the crane, you can tell the operator to put more or less weight on it as the kerf opens up. You use the wood fibers to your advantage; if you leave a slight tab on the crane side. No more bounce from too much weight and its easy to set down. 2 slings on a piece that you are unsure of. 1 sling of you know you're butt heavy. Lol. Thanks for the video, man!
Exactly right, mjb4545. Kerf opens up every time when the cut is started directly below the orientation of the choker/clevis. But I use two chokers, with the bells next to each other. I also prefer cable over fabric slings.
