How To Do A ZD30 Oil Change and Filter - ( GU Nissan Patrol )

I show you how to do a ZD30 oil change and filter change on my GU Nissan Patrol.
My ZD30 Nissan Patrol gets an engine oil change and oil filter change every 5000ks.
I have been doing the oil change on my ZD30 at those intervals ever since the motor ticked over 200000ks. The motor now has 325000ks on the clock.
The ZD30 engine in the Nissan Patrol has received a bad wrap for many years.
But if you look after your ZD30 with a regular oil change and oil filter change, they can and will go the distance.
All engines love good clean oil, but even more so with a diesel engine.
The oil in a diesel ZD30 gets dirty pretty quickly, so it really pays to change the oil at regular intervals.
When it comes to something as important as regular service and oil changes, Im using a good quality oil and Im still using genuine Nissan oil filters.

Did my first Oil Change in the first week of buying the Patrol back in December 2019, did not think anything off it at the time, being a new car to me, but did not notice a Oil Canister Spigot/Keeper as you called it . . . in the old filter when I changed it out . . . and again at it's 160,000klm Service. About a month ago I came across a post in one of the Patrol forums about a thing called a "Spigot" or Oil Filter Keeper as you called it . . . and I started thinking . . . well 170,000klm Oil Change last week . . . found my Oil Canister Spigot/Keeper was missing . . . . yep my fears were correct. Don't know how long it's been missing, but my Patrol thanks to Patrolapart now has a Oil Filter Spigot again, and funny how after 30 odd klm's of driving, can hear a slight turbo and engine whistle . . . thinking the filter might be filtering the oil lol. Dose make me wonder how long the spigot was missing, and what if any, damage has been done, and the benefit's of knowing and knowing how to service your own vehicle, or having a trusted mechanic service your vehicle.
@timbates4wdadventures
@timbates4wdadventures 4 года назад
G'day mate, It is a common problem with the oil filter keeper or spigot being thrown out with the old oil filter. It happened to me many years ago, and i wont let anyone change my oil and filter any more for that reason. Unless the filter is being help in place by the spigot, the filter isn't doing its job. Im glad mate that you found the problem with yours. Thanks a lot mate for your detailed reply. Cheers Tim.

Thanks for showing me an easy way to get to the oil filter, I was looking at a by pass filter but you have shown me an easier way. I used to get it done by a garage every 10,000 and I would do one in between but the pirates charge too much and are incompetent. For the last time they did a service they informed me that the diffs and transfer case needed to be drained and refilled for the oils were dirty. So I spent a day doing that and the whole lot was as clean a a whistle and did not require doing. They also advised me that the clutch and brakes needed flushing which was crap for I had done that about 1500 ks before when I prepped the vehicle to go to cape york and they wanted to charge me nearly $800 to do the job. Well that is the last time REPCO will get my vehicle.

Tim, the washers are copper, not brass and if the washer on the sump is a straight copper washer and not the compressible type that must be replaced, you should anneal it before using it again. The problem with copper is that it hardens over time and this is called 'work hardening' and to return the washer to a more malleable state so it seals correctly, you hold it into a flame until it becomes cherry red and then let it cool. It must be heated to cherry red and that is important. Also, sump plugs have a torque setting, you should use a torque wrench. With regards to the filter, all good except, you need to put some fresh oil into the filter before screwing it back up. This means that there is oil in there when you start up and your engine isn't starved of oil whilst the filter fills up.
@timbates4wdadventures
@timbates4wdadventures 3 года назад
G'day mate, The washer that i do use is the standard compressible washer that i get with the oil filter from Nissan. I will look into the torque setting for the sump plug and see what that is. @@timbates4wdadventures Even the locals were complaining about the sand flies, but yes eastern side Awinya Creek was slightly better. Towing the offroad camper so happy with medium tracks as we are by ourselves (not in a group) was planning Jamieson / Licola via C486 / then Hayfield to have a look then make our way to Dargo. Was going o stop in at Dargo Pub/General Store for advice on tracks but if you know any thanks. Hoping to do Billy Goat and Blue Rag but that might be hopeful but somewhere around Talbootville would be good. Should have around 3-4 days before we have to start heading back to Townsville.

Mark Field yeah that’s the way to go from Jamieson mate. Billy Goat is open. But Blue Rag and Dargo High Plain Rd is still closed. Crooked River Tk out of Talbotville is great. 24 crossings. Bull Town Spur at the end. Collingwood Spur Track. Is a good circuit. 👍

@@johnlong6010 I didn't do the job mate. My mechanic did all the work. Not sure how long it would take, if just doing the timing chain. As i mentioned above, this was done while pretty much the whole top and front was off the motor. Worth looking into if you haven't replaced one for a while. If that chain brakes, it's goodbye motor. Gday Hugh, That’s great you’re finding the videos helpful. The tool I use for removing the filter housing is just the bar that a socket goes on. The square end, fits in the square hole on the end of the filter housing. Thanks for your reply and feedback mate. Cheers Tim.

@@timbates4wdadventures Cheers mate for your reply. As us patrol owners GU zd30 we know we need to look after them, I knew penrite oil (same as the one you use was the correct choice). But just unsure about the choice on Cooper/wesfil oil filter. So i might keep the cheaper oil filter as a spare for touring and use a nissan genuine one for main oil changes. The wesfil air filter are great though cheap and has zero issues with it. But thanks mate for your reply. and Gday from Tassie

@@timbates4wdadventures G'day tim, well changed the oil in the Patrol today well didn't i swear lol, First off i was going to message you and complain that their is no access from under the wheel arch until i stopped and looked and saw mine being still new (GU y61 2015 very low k's) has the rubber lining hiding the access to the oil filter so i did it the hard way hahahaha, All went ok used all genuine parts such as sump plug copper crush washer and oil filter, as i said before i used the exact same oil as you too. So i remembered to place the o ring on the filter housing in the correct spot every thing done up snug ready for the new oil. NEVER bloody use the penrites flexible oil filler spout noticed it starts leaking around the thread. SO hear i am just about to pour using a clean plastic jug (1.5 ltr) so that was fkn painful will invest in proper mechanics one. Anyway just stared pouring new oil in and my blood ladder or so called workshop step stool snapped on one side causing me to spill about a good 50 mls of oil all over the bloody main belt and everywhere else fun fun. Any way fill it up took about 8.5-8.9 ltrs. So ready to start the girl up and warm her up. Thought the engine was going to blow never heard so much noise come from a belt before, rang the mechanics to ask how get oil off the belt, so just used a can of degreaser, still went nuts. hosed it off did it all over again went for a 30 min drive now most of the noise has stopped. But now i have ordered a new main belt from mr nissan just incase. Just need a few workshop tools so reaching is not such a big thing and a blood proper oil jug so i never have to spill oil again and a new strong step ladder LOL. But apart from that it was a easy job mate and your video helped me out heaps and many thanks for sharing it!!
