One of the big reasons we stay away from selecting mycelium from very outside of the plate is that its closest to the openings, which are closest to contamination. The best bet is to select mycelium just a bit inside from the outside edge. This is the newest mycelium growth and is surely to be clean as long as it is not touching the outside edge.
