Hello everyone, welcome back to another video and another tutorial! I've been asked in the comments about how I do my bookmarks, what materials I use, so I thought I could do a video explaining everything!
I do everything myself, so it's possible to do your own bookmarks at home or at your studio, looking professional, without having to order hundred of the same design.

Hi there! My name is Beatriz Penas and I'm a portuguese illustrator, nice to meet you! I've been taking my illustration more seriously and making a business out of it since the beggining of 2019. I mentioned in the video I use 350 GSM paper but I use 300gsm, sorry for the mistake! I want to try with the 350gsm in the future and I'll let you know how it goes! 😊

At my job, we use corner rounders for printing projects all the time, try doing a little less paper at a time and flip them face down, you’ll possibly get a cleaner cut on your bookmarks, hope this helps 💕

Not sure if you've answered this before, but how do you get both sides of the bookmark to be aligned properly? My duplex printing always seems to be off just the tiniest bit. :) love this video, thank you!

Hey! Awesome video, i totally love the idea of using laminating foil on rolls with just a regular lamination machine - i was just about to buy the expensive laminating roller machine, just so i'd be able to use the laminating foils on rolls! so thanks for saving me 2k! :) Have you ever tried doing the gold foiling over the laminated paper? Thank you for this really nice and detailed video! I'm about to start experimenting with lamination, and I'm so excited about it! I have two questions: - Can you reuse the laminating pouches? If yes, how many times? - Which heat setting do you use for the laminaton?

Yaaay, good luck! 👍🏻 I used the ones I have a few duzen times, really depends! :) but yes, definitely reusable since I only use them for protection. I normally use it in the highest setting but if you can buy a laminator with different geat settings so you can try it out :)

Hey love! With your corner rounder, to get a better more accurate cut, you may just need to slightly adjust your edge guide placement. You would be surprised how much difference changing the guides by as much as a millimetre can make:)

@@aPenasIllustrator It took me aaaages to get mine just right, it’s a real pain in the butt to do, but it’s so much better once their in just the right spot :D. Especially when you do bigger volumes. I also found that putting a little bit of blue tac or putty behind the guides to prevent them from slipping even just slightly helps :D

Eu tenho essa cantoneira e alguma coisas ajudaram a melhorar. Tente alinhar as duas traves laterais com a chavinha e o gabarito que vem com ela. Outra coisa que ajudou muito foi sempre girar a borrachinha que fica abaixo da lâmina, pois quando fica muito gasta, o corte não sai legal. Espero que ajude...

Some are not very good quality sometimes! But I just search BOPP film Portugal ou rolos laminação on Google and I found a couple of retailers after some investigation. Hope it helps 😘

Hi, and thank you for making and sharing this video. I have a question, however. Many years ago when I first got a laminator I did exactly what you do to make these: I printed the bookmarks in 'strips' on a sheet of card stock, then laminated it. BUT. . . after cutting between them there was no laminated border around each bookmark so the edges of the bookmark were not encased in laminate. I then started cutting the bookmarks apart and laminating them with a little space between them so after laminating and cutting, each bookmark was totally enclosed in laminated plastic. Maybe this technique hasn't caused any problems for you, but it didn't work for me. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos for inspiration. Happy New Year and stay safe.

Thanks for the demonstration- very useful. I bought a laminator today to laminate some die cut book marks I’ve made. Can you tell me the difference between doing it your way with the thin plastic first, and just putting them through the laminating pouch please?

Hiii! Yay, glad you are trying it out! This plastic is very thin so if you don't use the pouch it gets all wrinkled and folded in the laminator :) With the pouch it stays in place!

Hi, thank you for your video has been super helpful as always. Out of curiosity have you ever used the matte lamination paper on your notebooks? My baby drooled on one of my own design notebooks and this showed a flaw in my design as it started to bleed, so currently looking for an alternative way to protect them.

I want to do some crafts with my daughter, and she wants her own bookmarks with her own drawings 💖 Currently I'm searching for a foil for laminating (because you know, kids with their smudgy hands). You mentioned a 30 mic BOPP, but I saw in the comments you are still experimenting with this. After this many years, how do you feel about them? Still love it? Found a better one maybe?

Hiiii! I stopped using it since I use it for bigger quantities, using with with a smaller laminator was a pain, I’m saving for a big bopp machine! The downside is that you have to buy a biiiig roll so can be a bit expensive to just use it for crafts. Maybe you can look into some laminate pouches? :) it’s cheaper and they are very thick!

Hi, exactly what I was looking for *-* but how on earth do you have such a smooth finish ? I bought the same plastic sheets as you to protect and help for the lamination and i have an equivalent laminating paper but I always get wrinkles (or at least 1 a the very end to make me angry and waist my paper) , I can't make it work and if i don't laminate my covers the ink smudge very easily. Any suggestions ? do you think printing on a laserjet would help with the smudging so i don't have to laminate my covers ? Thanks a lot !!!

Hi Anya! I sometimes get bubbles as well, but it only happens sometimes. I noticed is more when the laminator is getting warmer, so maybe your laminator is too warm or with the temperature changes? It can happen, specially when they have a lot of use! I'm not sure. I had a bad experience using laser in vinyl stickers, in the warmer month's they were arriving glued to each other on costumers. Not sure how it works on other types of paper, but my experience wasn't very good :)

in my previous question I meant to ask..do you know if dtf pet film roll works the same way as a BOPP roll? Could I use dtf pet film roll to laminate? I also don't like how the look of sealed edges look if I were to use normal vinyl lamination so I'm really trying to use the same method as you for lamination.

Yay, that's perfect! I only use the plastic pouch as extra protection, so I dont get glue from the lamination on the machine. But you can use only the lsmination film, without the plastic pouch :) thank you 💛

Great and very helpful video! Question: Doesn't the matte lamination foil peel off once it's cut? I like to laminate my bookmarks but at the very end, the lamination foil peels off and i don't know what to do about it. Thank for the help!

I'm curiuos to wether the matte laminate stays put when the bookmark will be used over and over again? Normal thick and glossy laminate won't glue to the paper once you cut it open, if you can picture it?

It does. This laminate is not like those sheets you are talking, these are the ones used by print houses, like you see in books and stuff. It doesn’t come out easily, even if you try it rips the paper off

Hey, what if you don't have lamination machine with u, how to stick the lamination paper then?

You can use cold lamination and apply it manually, but for this specific one it has to be with a lamination machine

I’m doing the same process as you by putting the film inside the pocket sleeves, but somehow the film won’t stick onto my paper. Did you had to feed the paper in a couple times to get the film to Adhere to the paper? I can’t seem to get my film to adhere and I’m doing same process as you. :(

No, it adhere to the paper at the first try.. Are you using the correct film? Are you using a hot laminator? And are you putting the right way, where the glue paper is touching the paper? Maybe check all of these. Hope you can make it work 💛

Hi lovely! Thank you so much for watching my videos, very happy you like them! 😊 For the notepads I use 80gsm paper for all the sheets and for the back I use 1mm thick card. If you are talking about the notebooks, for the covers I use 250gsm paper so they don't break when folded :)

Hi , you don’t appear to leave a border of laminated material , if I cut that close they come apart. Would love to know how you stop that on your bookmarks ? Thanks

You can only do it with this type of laminate :) for laminate pouches it doesn’t work

I just found your channel and I love your work its beautiful! 😍😍 Definitely had to subscribe 😁😁 I was wondering though, after you cut your bookmarks to size, does it not affect the lamination seal on your bookmarks?

Thank you so much, that means a lot 🥺 It doesn't, the lamination really adders to the paper, the cutting doesn't 'open' it at all 😘

@@nadinek6693 I think so! I really like the 30 micron one, it's very hard to apply but if looks like the paper it's not even laminated because it's so thin

It does and it prevents the lamination to move place :)

@@aPenasIllustrator I use the matte lamination pouches for my matte vinyl stickers but it only adheres to glossy vinyl. If the laminator gets too hot it bubbles and if it doesn’t get hot enough it looks foggy. I think I have found the right temperature now and I will experiment some more with a plastic cover. Thank-you

Thank you for this I want to make bookmarks to advertise my Animal & Candle business. I have a question. Amazon is selling laminate paper pouches for bookmarks. Has anyone ever used it? I'd like to know if it's any good

Hi Sarah!! I never used them, since I don't really like how they look. You can cut the lamination in the margin of the paper, you have to leave a few millimeters, or it might unglue from the paper. But maybe you can try to find videos from other creators that used them and I'm sure they will share more about it and better eheh

I have seen someone laminate without the heat on in order to push the bubbles out before heat sealing.

I am trying to laminate without leaving edges from the lamination, everytime i cut right at the edge it opens. I hope this materials helps with that. Thank you

With this specific BOPP laminate it doesn’t happen. It’s the same one they use for books and others things in printing houses :)

When you buy the book marks do they all on one sheet of paper also when you have laminate the paper and cut it doesn’t come unstuck,you are so relaxing to watch thank you carol.

You can do them on the size you want! Mines are around 15x20cm :)
