Clutch pops are a hard thing to explain. This is my version of a crash course on how to pop the clutch on a dirt bike. This is a skill that comes in handy all the time out on the trail! Whether you need to move the front wheel into a different line, or you need to get it up and over an obstacles, you'll find yourself making use of this skill constantly once you learn.

Oh wow! I've been 1 finger clutching withy pointer finger but middle finger makes so much more sense, it's a lot stronger. Thanks for showing that in the video!
@megs_braap
@megs_braap 2 года назад
Using your pointer finger isn't a bad habit. Many top riders will argue that you have more control with the pointer than the middle. I developed this bad habit because my hands are so small and my middle finger happens to be the only one that reaches haha!

Your videos are always spot on. I like that you use the social finger instead of the index finger. I used the index for most of my life until I hurt it pretty good at work. Used the middle on a ride for a day and now I use it most of the time. At 5'7" it helps reach the lever quite a bit. The again for the great vid Meg.

@megs_braap
@megs_braap 2 года назад
Hey John, my clutch pull isn't extremely heavy. If you find it tough to pull in your clutch with one finger, you might have a clutch pull that is too heavy. Depending on whether you have a cable clutch or a hydraulic clutch, there are things you can do to make it easier to pull in your clutch. One finger on the clutch is ideal because you get the most control with one finger.

you should mention hip/body weight factors. load the front forks. watch hip movement at 51 seconds. Your hips move back as you pull the bars a bit after loading the front suspension. Its obvious while watching but helps to understand the timing of that body movement along with the clutch/throttle.

question, do you need to pull on the handle bars also to help lift the bike up while doing the clutch pop? Or does the front tire come up on its own?
@megs_braap
@megs_braap 2 года назад
Try not to pull on the bars and let the bike do the work. Pulling up wastes energy and doesn’t do anything really for helping bring the front end up. I hope this helps!

I am riding a 2021 KLX230R and it doesn't have much power. Should I give it more throttle sooner? Also keep up the great work, I love the videos
@megs_braap
@megs_braap 2 года назад
Yes, on air cooled 4 strokes, you’re going to have to give it a wee bit more throttle and get on it a bit sooner because they aren’t as responsive. Once you master the timing though, you’ll be able to do beautiful clutch pops on that bike. And thank you for the kind words!
@Crunchyredneck
@Crunchyredneck 2 года назад
Also I have one more question. I find it hard to twist the throttle and cover the brake lever at the same time. Is there any techniqueb to that?
@megs_braap

MackRATRODDER Right that’s tough! I don’t have a specific technique that I use for that. I suppose it just comes with lots of practice and repetition!
