I admire seeing your tool confidence, you make it look easy but I no it's confidence born out of knowledge and lotsa hour's riding the machines..Great job beautiful guitars and I wish you all luck.
You are a great artist. you have inspired me to do a tartan fabric top with a black burst fade for my first guitar build. Using my family tartan. A big bite i know, but with your videos, i am feeling confident. Keep it up mate!
When i made my pickup mule i did a coffee motif fabric, pretty cool. i glued with titebond , then i did use west systems epoxy.i had it on hand . Doesnt sand easy . Wont use it again,to much like fiberglass epoxy .i spent 20 years in the marine industry, had it with resins , dont ya know. Your method is the boss.
Man, I have got to look for a shaper. I'm in love with that beast. I accidentally hit closed-caption, and I was going to flip it back off, but then it said "Hi! I'm Math!" so I left it on for grins. I had no idea there was a pea bass!
lol - no it's all RU-vid - if you've never turned it on next time you've got a "mostly speaking" vid to watch check it out. It can be hilarious. Arguably translations are a lot funnier tho.....
Matt that pin router is so cool! I see you have a jet air dust collector, is the pin router a jet also? Jet and delta make great tools! Also grizzilly is another good tool company! The owner has made a bunch of guitars...I guess its his hobby. Anyways another great video!😁
I'm a bit late coming to the party but this is brilliant. I'll give it a crack on my Tele. Can't find Simtec here in Australia so I'll use the epoxy resin that I have on hand. If epoxy doesn't work I'll sand back and start over.
Liked and subscribed. Awesome series... can't wait to look further into your channel. Great info also... not just a step by step but also the how and why for and other things that people can really benefit from. Appreciate the detail. 7:27 just the "pin router"?? Not beloved at that point?
Thanks Matt! I used epoxy on the one I'm working on. Its a pain to sand. It had to cure for a week before it wasn't too soft to sand. Looking forward to trying Symtec on the next one. It was an Epi LP Junior. I added "ears" to the headstock and covered it in fabric too. I'm trying to decide if I bind this one or if I just do a 1/4" round over and black burst around the edge. I appreciate the videos.
Matt in part 2 you sprayed the next layer but i havent got a spray gun or room for a booth. Couldn't i just add the next coat with the roller again. Thank for the great videos, just ignor the thumbs down id like to see them do better.
Hi Tim. One can do a lot of good work without a spray rig. Try a couple different things and see what works the best. A good paint brush would be a good choice... of course it would be ruined after one use but it might give you a smoother coating. Thanks for watching amigo
Thanks for this series Matt. Love this fabric. Have you ever tried to glue silk fabric or similar ? I think that would be less porous than Cotton. I'm asking because in my neighborhood, there are many Turkish stores and those guys have really nice silk fabric or silk alike at cheap prices. Thanks Matt. Greets from Belgium.
Have you read my blog on this? I touch on the various fabrics to use. There is a lot more information than in the videos. www.texastoastguitars.com/single-post/2018/10/16/How-We-Do-Fabric-Top-Guitars
@@TexasToastGuitars Ow.. i'm sorry about this Matt. I wasn't even aware you had a blog and my guess is, that many subsribers don't know this either ? Someone even commented on that matter on your blog. I've seen all off the vids and never heard anything mentioned about a blog, or did i missed something ? It didn't even came up to me to search for a website, because i'm used too watch the vids here and assume all the info is in there. I always do the effort to read all off the comments on every channel, so i don't ask the same question than someone else allready did , because it's time consuming for you. You put a lot off time in answering questions, even on other channels you replied on me about a week ago on Ken's Boudreau Guitars, wich i highly appreciate. Maybee you should mention more you have a blog , it could be a real time saver for you. Thanks again for the reply Matt ! Cheers from Belgium. EDIT: I read also a few times the " watch more" content above and NOW i see the link too your blog. Previously i didn't spend many attention to that, because i think of a blog is like the same as a vlog or an everyday journal like on Twitter and stuff like that, and i'm just not interested in that, because i confuse those things i guess. Maybee i'm not alone on this ?
You are right, I keep forgetting to mention it more in the videos. Actually, I forget to tell y'all so much stuff when I'm doing the vids that I decided to do the blog hahahaha
I am working on a video about the shaper right now called Dangerous Things Are Dangerous. It can be a really sporty tool to use and I don't like to do it when people are standing around... when people are watching me that's the only time crazy things seem to happen.
Do I dare ask what sharpening the shapers cutters entails? I know they're replaceable, but what if I'm cheap? Little something to add to the shaper video you mentioned, if it's not already shot, that is.
I have one more question . How do you find the holes for the string thru the body bridge once the fabric is glued to the body , please give me your expertise thank you , Frank
I have a squire strat that I'm thinking of customizing. I'm really digging this fabric top idea. Since it has a finish how hard would it be to put a fabric top on? As easy as just sanding the top and applying fabric? Or is it better to start with fresh wood.
You can certainly spray shellac and sanding sealer over fabric... however, I know you will not get the same results we get. if you want something more rustic, than it might be the hot set-up? You will have to do some testing and see what you come up with. As I have stated before this is the way we do it and don't have experience with other materials.
I really enjoy your work and your personality, Matt. It's what it's all about. P.S....im still working on getting that spec list together for that baritone. I haven't forgotten!
Just curious about the fabric install.Im assuming it doesn’t affect the tone a whole bunch. And great job with all these lessons, tidbits and great looking guitars! I love the fabric idea, you’ve kinda opened the floodgates for inspiration,Cheers!!!
Give it a try... and don't worry too much about how it impacts the tone. Once you wrap a bunch of human meat around a guitar all that wood tapping stuff pretty much goes out the window
Awesome video as always! I f*****g love these fabric topped guitars you guys make. Like those old '68 paisley Fenders, this fabric idea opens up SO many ideas! I do have a question, and I def. agree that only an asshole would ask you to answer questions without even having the sack to subscribe. I subscribed way back, and I just signed up for Patreon. I've learned so much from and enjoy watching your videos so much, I wish I could give more! Anyway... my quick question is... in one of the previous videos on this fabric top, you applied the Simtec Coatings EZ sanding sealer with the weenie roller, but then you said, you would spray a second coat; A.) Why spray a second coat instead of just wielding the weenie again? B.) That stuff looks kinda thick. Do you not have to alter it's consistency somehow to spray it? Okay... I lied; I have another short question. In this other Texas Toast Video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kKoY5BzqIW0.html you are spraying a double neck body in a copper metalic Deltron paint color. I would love to know what the name of that color is.
Hi Michael, thanks for watching subscribing and becoming a Patreon member. Are you watching the exclusive videos? Are they worth a crap? hahaha We sprayed the 2nd round because we wanted to show y'all as many ways as we could think of to apply this stuff. We had a lot to do so it was considerably faster to spray it and worth cleaning the spray gun. If you are only doing 1 it is probably much easier to roll it. Be sure to read my blog on this. There is a lot more information than in the videos... www.texastoastguitars.com/single-post/2018/10/16/How-We-Do-Fabric-Top-Guitars Let me look up that paint code for you next time I'm out in the booth, send me a reminder email so I don't have any excuses.
No Matt it was probably some young troll who doesn't even watch your channel on a regular basis or it could be a grumpy ass old dude. You Rule Matt********
If you aren't getting a few trolls down-voting, then your videos aren't getting out "into the real world". Search for something completely obviously awesome - like (seriously) "firefighter saves babies life" on youtube and you'll see down votes. You're videos are excellent, and people should know enough to take away what they can. Keep it up, Matt!
