FIRST I want to say I LOVE your videos. You are a good knitting teacher. Good well made videos with good lighting so I can actually see what your doing. That helps greatly at my age. LoL I learned to knit a little as a teenager, but did not stick with it into adulthood. And then as an adult I RELEARNED it when my child was learning in 4H club. I taught myself helix knitting then because I was making a little beanie for my child's doll. Still have that little beanie. That was fun.
Helix knitting gives really fun effects when using a solid color yarn and a self striping or color gradient yarn. I’ve used this method to use leftover yarn from self striping socks to good effect.

That's a very cool technique! 👍❤❤❤ I think I like the 3 slipped loops method because it seems you won't need to use stitch markers once you get started. As I suspected, being a crocheter is going to give me an advantage in learning knitting techniques. The color change is very similar (if not exactly depending how you see it) to crochet in that you complete the stitch with the new color. Thanks so much for this nifty knitting tutorial! 👍😊

Wowzers. Im not sure i will try the garter stitch helix, but will absolutely give the first example a go. There is so much more to knitting than I ever imagined. Thankyou so much for making my knitting journey such a weird and wonderful educational extravaganza 🎉
I love helical knitting! Made socks (w 2 colors), cowls (w 3 to 4 colors)… I don’t mind the first (or last) offset st, and I really like your camouflaged idea using mosaic! Helix seems to go sooo fast… chasing each other around, never catching up! I use the helix principle for my crochet items (totes,baskets, potholders) where I start 2nd color at opposite end of beginning chain. Use for round, oval or straight edge (bottom of tote w no shaping for example). I’ve always used this method in crochet (= no join at beg/end of rounds), cleaner, neater circles/ovals! Since I love garter stitch, I’m starting to incorporate Helix Garter to hats, cowls, mitts. Thank you Norman!!
Excellent, most people only show the "trick" and do not explain the why. I know a lot of people struggle with the beginning of round and how to work for example a sweater pattern while using this technique, maybe worth to hear your view on that 😊
what I mean is when knitting a plain sweater pattern ,or any plain pattern for that matter, and you want to incorporate helical knitting. It can be quite confusing where to put your increases. Not all stitches are worked the same amount of rows because of the slipping.
To be honest that kind of made my head hurt. 😅. Excellent info though and I’ll definitely be coming back when I get ready to give this technique a go. About to try some socks with mosaic designs so I’m going to find that video and watch it before I start. You’re my go-to for any new technique I want to learn!!!
I would love a video on jog-less fair isle knitting in the round. I've seen similar videos about stripes before but they don't explain how this would apply to patterns.
welll, that's because I am not aware of a single solution for that. The key here is designing a pattern where the jog simply isn't noticeable but it will always be there.
Thank you Norman. Had to watch it 2x to understand Helix knitting. However, It is not for me as I will get irritated by the number of skeins I have to consider. When working stripes, I follow your traditional way to carry new colour, which is a lot easier for me. Probably, when I have advanced with with knitting techniques, I’ll go over your Video once more.❤
I used this technique with hand dyed laceweight that I held double. When I knit the swatch, there was a lot of pooling. Then I swatched alternating balls, still pooling. Then I researched and used the technique of slipping three stitches and three balls of the same color. Problem fixed. I know, you’re thinking that holding double I was using six balls with two held together at each point. No, I’m not crazy. I wound two balls together for one ball. So six balls condensed to three balls. So much less trouble. Thank you for this video. It reminded me that I wanted knit a sweater with leftovers into helix stripes.
Too funny!!! I was just thinking about looking this up!! I have several partial balls of yarn, but none enough for a hat. The only thing I wonder about is if I could use patterned stitches too.
Hey Norman I was gonna email u but I thought it would be disrespectful of me to email u about this hence commenting only but I really wanted to share this with u I'm currently knitting my second sweater and u can say I'm a fairy experienced beginner knitter as I ve knitted a few things. I have found such a nice way to knit the sleeves where I decrease 2 stitches every 2 rounds with 2 stiches in the middke as buffer so there arent homes and that way it slowly decrease to give me a nice cuff size at the end but also just looks so beautiful. Let me know if u try it. I was just proud of myself and wanted to share it with u since u really helped me on my knitting journey.😊
For hand dyed yarn do you recommend the first technique of simple dropping one ball and starting the second ball of yarn? Excellent tutorial …… Thanks!
well, for hand-dyed yarn I always recommend alternating the skeins at least for 2-6 rounds (depending on how busy/special the dye is). This doesn't have to be helix knitting but it certainly can't hurt!
Hey norman just had a question so u know the bit where u taught us how to knit 2 rows of helix rows using 2 yarn skein of the same colors. Couldnt u do it by joining in the beggining of the skein and than for the second row use the end of the skein that way u only use 1 skein if u dont need a lot of yarn.
I love helix knitting. I've Been knitting Thin Blue Line ear warmers for our local police officers, but wanted wider black lines than blue and and the same in black and red for our firefighters. I never thought of using two or three skeins of black yarn. Thank you for this very helpful video.
Hi norman as a beginner knitter that has only done a few projects and currently doing a color work sweater i had a question on this. Why not just change the yarn every other row like in colorwork? Would it not give the same effect or what is the difference? Im sorry if this is a stupid question but just wonering.😊
Not a stupid question at all! If you were to do that method of alternating colors, you would get what he shows at 1:28. You can see the ends are mismatched and do not join evenly. This is because all knitwork of this kind is knit in a spiral, winding up like a spring or a screw. Helix knitting is a way of staggering your colors throughout the spiral so they line up tidily as you work up. (: By only doing some parts one color and keeping your ends nicely sorted... you divide the spring or the spiral up by sections, so their height matches. That's why it's called as "helix" knitting, colors are blocked inside of your work itself in a twisting chain, like a helix. EDIT: Just to be clear... 1:28 will not happen if you are working it flat. Helix knitting is a way of weaving things like sleeves, socks, hats, snoods, infinity scarves, and whole-worked sweaters so the stripes line up, without having to knit a "panel" and sew it up.

The results are great ! I guess it is not very portable, you better have a table to work on, otherwise in a knitting bag all the yarn would get tangle.
You know what it is kinda hard to do? I am crocheting while watching your video and I keep messing up my stitches. I am switching between slip stitch and half double crochet lol and I was getting confused LOL cause I was watching the knitting lol
you simply stop knitting. I mean, you will end up with the same little noticeable bit on the other side as well. That's why I showed you ways to hide this at the end of the video. BU tother than that, there's nothing special you need to observe.
I hate circular needles, plastic needles, short double pointed, I always use 8 -12" , and wooden needles. All my needles are metal. The yarn slides over them smoothly.
