My one tip (that I haven't already seen someone suggest but I might've missed someone saying this already) is to turn your clothes inside out before you wash them. Obviously things like socks don't really matter but it can really help to protect printed tshirts (it would've protected my printed polka dot skinny jeans as well if I had remembered to do it...) and it can help to reduce pilling so your clothes stay newer looking for longer.

If you ever get your own blood on your clothes, a good way to help get it out of the fabric is to spit on it before you wash it. It sounds gross, but something in your own spit breaks down your own blood and helps it to wash out. However, if you go on an axe murdering rampage, your spit won't be able to get your victims' blood out of your clothes. So keep that in mind the next time you become homicidal.

So here's what I do: 1- Stuff all the clothes in the washing machine. White, black and rainbow coloured. 2- Is this enough soap? Let's put a bit more just in case. 3- I left the fabric softener in my room. I mean, I'm sure it's not that important, right? 4- Why is there SO MANY options? I'm gonna go for the most used one, crowd intelligence anyone? 5- Become religious for the 30 minutes it takes for the laundry to be done.
@vesper7750
@vesper7750 5 лет назад
My thoughts as a Swedish person: 1 - I have accidentally washed some stuff mixed together and all lighter beige and white garments got a blueish gray hue. :( 2 - Soap? At least if you put dish soap in the dishwasher it WILL foam out on your whole floor (been there). I don't know if you've tried it in the washing machine but I would be a little careful about it at least. 3 - I haven't used fabric softener for years now. Best decision ever, the laundry detergent makes the laundry smell amazing anyways and I have really grown to like the stiffness that comes with newly washed towels and the alike. 4 - True, so many options. Driving me nuts every time. 5 - 30 minutes? Is this another American thing with their supersize super fast washing machines? lol. My washing takes from about 1h 40mins up to 3h. If you rent an apartment in Sweden you have access to the laundry room in the building which have industrial type machines, which go faster (but it's still at least 50-60 minutes for one washing). The downside is that the machines are bigger so you have to have a lot more to fill it with or it will be wasteful.

A pro tip I discovered during my undergrad days: if you use fabric softener sheets in the dryer, a quick way to clean the lint from the previous load of laundry is to collect the lint with a used dryer sheet. It's just a little quicker than using your fingers/fingernails sometimes and tends to remove the lint more thoroughly.

If it's not raining, I highly recommend hanging your clothes on a rack or clothesline outside. It'll save you money on not having to use the dryer, and it's better for the environment. And also your clothes won't wrinkle. Or even hang them inside if it's winter and you've got space in your house. They'll only take half a day to dry at most. And if it's summer, it'll only take a couple hours for clothes to dry outside.
@cj-seejay-cj-seejay
@cj-seejay-cj-seejay 10 лет назад
i was gong to mention clotheslines too. if you look at how much energy different household appliances use, dryers are REALLY big energy hogs. i live in a place with a long winter, so a clothesline isn't really feasible for half the year, but i love it when i can do it.
@emmeline-tyler
@emmeline-tyler 10 лет назад
Yeah, seriously, use a clothes horse and hang clothes inside. Or hang them on coat hangers on the curtain rail
@MarkShaneHansen
@MarkShaneHansen 7 лет назад
On the opposite side we have: some clothes can stretch when hung to dry. If you dry them inside, it will lead to high humidity that can be bad for the house structure and general indoor climate. And hanging clothes outside can lead to a bleaching effect from the sun. I'm serious, this is not a "general lightening of the colors over years". One hot day with the sun shining and now I own a black t-shirt that's a faded grey from the middle of my torso down. Only on frontside of course, since that one was facing the sun. That's just one reason why you may want to wash clothes inside-out, since it also wears less on the visible surfaces of your clothes. Or just go full hippie and never wash your clothes. Washing clothes really suck. Drying clothes really suck. And ironing clothes really suck. Actually, I don't want you to go full hippie. Just go full nudist, problem solved.

I wish this channel had existed back in 2004 when I was first out on my own. My parents never taught me how to do this stuff, and also never allowed me to do any of my laundry myself (or cook, or sew, or change a tire, or any of the other unbelievably useful things everyone should learn). I had to scrabble around and figure things out with a ton of trial and error. I had a lot of unintentionally pink clothes for a while. :|

I wear a lot of wool, so I have some tips for wool: You don't have to wash it very often, just air it out if it smells. When you do need to wash it, use the lowest temperature and low centrifuge (if your washer has a wool program, use that), and you'll want to try to use a detergent that is specially made for wool. Also, don't put any other fabrics in there with the wool! If you do, your wool will shrink and come out all thick and weird. Also some tips for your nice clothes that maybe have nice embroideries or beads or other things that you want to be careful about: put it in a washing bag, or an old pillow that you stitch together to make a bag. This will protect your beloved dress/shirt/whatever. Also maybe set the centrifuge to a low setting in this case too.

***** They actually have lingerie bags that you can wash your bras and panties in. They don't cost much, I got mine for $5 at Walmart. Also, it is a good idea to make sure your bras are hooked before washing them. Otherwise they pose a risk of grabbing/tangling/tearing other bras.

This is one of the adult skills I have actually mastered thus far. I find that there is zero point in separating into whites and colours... makes NO difference what so ever. I do usually wash completely new clothes of a very vibrant colour separately once, but after that they are usually good to go with the rest of the laundry. Bleach and softener, don't bother... and dryers just wear out your clothes more... but do check your pockets before doing your laundry!!! >__< And I can totally relate to ones mum doing all their laundry.... to this day I still do all the laundry and we've been together for 5 years...

I find when washing all of my clothes together, making sure to put them in the dryer immediately after they're done washing works to prevent colors from transferring most of the time. And usually after the item has been washed already, isn't just brand new, there's less of a risk, as a lot of the extra dye gets washed out that first time. The only thing I don't wash with in my regular loads is dark jeans. I've made that mistake before and it left all my light colored clothes slightly blue tinted.
@mickycarcar
@mickycarcar 10 лет назад
With modern detergents, you really don't need to use hot water. If you use cold water, you don't have to separate your whites. I use cold for everything except for particularly gross dishcloths--it uses less energy as well. Also, one I learned recently: don't put your bras in the dryer, hang them and they will last longer. And, since moving in with my boyfriend I've learned that not everybody knows the difference between a shirt and a sweater. Shirts can go in the dryer but sweaters can't. READ THE LABEL!!

This was a great video for my class!! My students say you had great tips like: Separate colors to avoid color transfer Read the tags how much laundry to put in the machines Your video is very informative. Thanks for your work!
@crowlovescore
@crowlovescore 10 лет назад
also really important part: consult the label on your detergent on how much you need, because were I come from you put the detergent in a separate compartment of the washing machine and some people live with the weird assumption that you have to completely fill it up, which can damage the machine a it might also not be able to completely wash your detergent out and the person after you will have traces of your detergent on their cloth too which might be dangerous, because of allergies etc.

I use white vinegar instead of fabric softener. It prevents bleeding of colors, gets rid of that musty smell in anything [like towels], softens the clothes, and doesn't leave the clothes smelling like vinegar at all. Fabric softener and sheets aren't good for you or the environment. Plus, vinegar is waaaay cheaper!

Thanks for showing people a typewriter. This one is a little advanced but it's great for young people to see how far technology has come. This channel is helpful for people who don't understand laundering clothes. I usually hand wash striped shirts. They bleed on the brighter colors. You gave me an idea to help my son. Thanks!

Thick fabrics (like denim or canvas [not that many people incorporate canvas in clothing]) take a lot more time (and energy) to dry in the dryer. Save power by hanging jeans to dry, and only put them in the dryer for a couple minutes to un-crisp them. This is also true for your giant flannel comforter.

Far out I'm 25 in a week and today is the first day I do laundry for myself. I used to try years and years ago but every time I went to family events my mum was furious at how crinkled my stuff was so she insisted she did my laundry. Today I'm going to make the most uncrinkled clean laundry she's ever seen, thanks how to adult, as I really need to learn how to be less hopeless haha

I'm karma aware - and i love the bit about taking time to clean the lint trap after you get the clothes out of the dryer - it literally makes the world a better place. Good for you and good for the environment. I think you can even use that lint for something, I know I like to keep used dryer sheets for dusting.

The only time I've ever had a problem with colors running onto white stuff is when I was washing something brand new that had never been washed before. Otherwise, I never have enough white stuff to merit paying for its own load.

....well, apparently people think this tip is mental, but take it from someone stuck in a laundromat job .... TENNIS BALLS! If you're washing your comforter or that puffy jacket, toss couple tennis balls into the dryer with them. It helps fluff 'em back out

@Wolfshade
@Wolfshade 10 лет назад
A few handy tips! A. Iron along the hems. B. Flatten the fabric along your ironing-board and be sure to move it so this is always the case, because otherwise you're totally ironing down wrinkles, friend. C. Always use a water-spray! It'll help with the steam-effect that makes the ironed clothing fresh smooth; and also prevent burn-marks. D. Never. Ever. Ever. Leave the iron in.
@Justineisftw

TIP: never put bras in the dryer, they'll get messed up! Bathingsuits too, the padding will fall out in the wash and it is easy to lose, so just skip the dryer! Colors do better with less heat (in wash and in dry) which'll make your clothing look better longer!!

When in doubt, put everything on the most gentle, coolest setting there is. Something that's supposed to go on the normal setting won't be hurt by being washed and dried on a gentler setting, but something that needs more care can be hurt by being washed and dried on a setting that's too warm or not gentle enough.

Yer explanation is a bit ... simple? ... for the range of laundry a family deals with. Ours gets separated to: (1) whites and jeans, since both can take bleaching, (2) light colours, (3) dark colours, (4) delicates and blacks. Whites and jeans get a hot/cold wash/rinse cycle (with bleach), light and dark colours each get a warm/cold cycle, and delicates get a cold/cold cycle, as do the blacks 'cos they fade less quickly that way. None of this addresses the question of STARCH, which IMO is essential for 100% cotton shirts, especially dress shirts. If you need STARCH, give up and take your shirts to be professionally laundered. You'll never get the ironing right on your own.

Why do you bleach your jeans? Doesn't that ruin them?
@jmcosmos
@jmcosmos 10 лет назад
mickycarcar Nope. You don't pour the bleach _on_ the jeans, just into the wash water. Diluted, it's fine and does its job of knocking out stubborn stains. And after six or seven years, you get these wonderfully soft jeans that are the palest sky-blue ever.
@mickycarcar
@mickycarcar 10 лет назад
I see. I guess I prefer getting jeans that are so dark you can't see the stains.

I don't think they are aiming to a family's laundry, so i think their explanation is fine, this is for young adults who started to live by themselves and didn't pay that much attention to the laundry at home or don't have that much time.

That's not very gracious of the ex-girlfriend. I had a male housemate second year of uni and when he admitted he didn't know how to clean a bathroom, of course I mocked him for being sexist, but I then went on to teach him how. I also taught a lot of male friends how to iron in first year uni

What is that washing machine‽ American washing machines are weird
@DearestClaudio
@DearestClaudio 10 лет назад
It's coin operated, which means it's a public washing machine, so it's probably not the newest machine ever. There are two types of washing machines in general no matter where you are: top load and front load. This one is a top load machine, one of the older models with the big random stalk in the middle of the basin that doesn't really have any discernible function.
@DanThePropMan
@DanThePropMan 10 лет назад
DearestClaudio Its function is to turn constantly and agitate the clothes and water with its corkscrew shape.
@DearestClaudio
@DearestClaudio 10 лет назад
DanThePropMan My parents just bought a brand new top load washing machine and it does that just fine without it; it's just a big basin for clothes and water that spins and shakes clothes up on its own. Maybe technological advances in washing machine basin shaking have been more significant than anyone assumed.
@DanThePropMan
@DanThePropMan 10 лет назад
DearestClaudio Maybe it's not an essential component to accomplish the task, but I'm pretty sure that's what it does.
