Eight years (It's actually 7 years) with my hair loc'd! 😫😆 Seven years strong! I had to rock the pipe cleaner style :) Hope you find my quick, short tutorial of how to achieve this look helpful!

Thanks Queen! I needed to hear that I started my loc journey in June and sometime I just want to start over, but it does give me a sense of freedom and the growth I've seen since locking my hair is amazing!! It's like all the juices and all the goodness I put in my hair stays there, like it's locked in lol

I'm inspired to do more with my hair. I think I'm going to try this myself this weekend and see how it goes. I like the fact that it's really 2 styles in 1. Tight when the pipe cleaners are in, then a looser curl when you take them out.

It looks really good!! Great job! This has been my go to hairstyle for the past 5 years. My curls last about 3 to 4 weeks before I have to wash it.

They're ok. I bought them when I had my first set of locs. I would stick to pipe cleaners. They both take the same amount of time to do. They also were not cheap.

Dominique, your locs are sooo gorgeous! I can't wait until mine are long enough to rock without the afro kinky extensions (I'm 6 months in with my locking journey). I did "the big chop" in Aug. 2013 and after my hair grew a bit, I was on the fence on locking my hair (I wanted to keep my natural hair loose and I also had to convince my husband to let me lock my hair should I decide to do so). The one thing I feel bad about though is the fact that if anyone was to ask me my motives on locking my hair, I can't give any deep, conscious response because my motive was pretty shallow *sighs*.

That came out really nice. My locks are 12 years young so they are past my butt...never hear anyone saying they are heavy but I am about to cut them bc my neck is killing me. Is there a trick i need to know what do when they get this long and heavy?

Honestly, there is no trick. My locs are 10 yrs now and I definitely feel the weight when I wash or put everything on top of my head....lol I've contemplated cutting mine as well, but I may just trim off a few inches..don't know yet. The best thing may be to just cut it to a comfortable length that doesn't hurt your neck everyday.

Love this........can you tell me if I did this the night before and wanted to take them out for a party so my hair was curly would this do the trick? Also so does my hair need to be wet?

+Diana Carberry If you did this style to your hair the night before, it would come out curly, but it really works when the hair is slightly damp. Somehow, it holds the style better. If you don't want to wash your hair, consider spritzing it with some water til you feel it's a bit damp to the touch. I've tried it on dry locs. It just doesn't stay.

I lightly spritz my hair if my locs are dry, but I normally do this style after washing my hair. I wait a little though until it's just damp.

Two questions, how long is your hair and how long do your curls last after you take out the pipe cleaners? This is my 9th yr with this set of locs and my hair is mid back length mostly, so far I haven't been able to get the curl to hold more than a few hours.

Emmie Boo My hair falls a little below bra strap. My curls last until I wash my hair, but they do fall as the weeks go by. Are you putting the pipe cleaners in on damp hair? (not when it's just washed) Also, it depends on how you wrap your locs around it and how long you keep pipe cleaners in. I usually keep them in for a full day…the most three days.

+Joy Shaw Thanks Joy :) My curls last for about a good week before they start falling. But if you cover them right at night, it could hold up longer before the hair really starts to fall.

U-Meleni Mhlaba-Adebo I've tried some from Walmart which were quite flimsy as well. You should try "Creatology Chenille Pipe Cleaners" from the Michael's Craft Store. I believe you can find it online. Hope it helps!

Honey HairObsessed If you are referring to moisturizing…then yes, I did before curling my hair, but I did not dip my hair in hot water to get my curls. My hair was already damp from washing it, so all I had to do was put the pipe cleaners in and leave it in for a day…that's how I achieved this look.

You can find them at craft stores like Michael's or Joann's fabric...if they're in your area. Or you can definitely find them on Amazon.

I usually keep them in for two days before I take them out. I get better curls. When my hair was shorter it was a day.

I don't know if faux locs are strong enough to hold one, and keep it's form but you could try.

I normally do this style after I wash my hair since the dampness helps hold the curls, but if I do this on dry hair, I most definitely spritz it with water to wet it a bit. You get a better result.

+mad4u19 My spray bottle contains: some water and some essential oils like, coconut oil, peppermint, and lavender. Helps to keep my hair fresh besides adding moisture.

I've had my dreads for 15 years and ive never had tihs type of hairstyle in my life....i left them in for four days took them out and there still curly as we speak thank you so much.
