How To Do Push Ups (Even If You Can't Do One Now)

Do push ups seem impossible? They're not! You can do it and this video breaks down the process of building up strength step by step.

A note to commenters: before you post negative thoughts like "I suck" or "I can't...", think again! Our bodies respond to our thoughts. For better success and confidence, try reframing your comment as, "I can do X right now and I am still working up to doing X." or "I'm finding out where I need to start to reach my goal." You CAN do it! IF you believe in yourself and cheer yourself on.
***NOTE: Since posting this video, several people have commented that they need to be able to do "X" number of push ups by a certain date for tests. If you can't do one push up now, you will not be able to do 10 or more this weekend. I can't tell you, as an individual, how long it will take you to get where (especially through the internet!!) BUT I can tell you it takes consistent practice over time.
One way to structure your workouts:
1) Do as many push ups as you can (or hold plank, whatever, starting from where you are now) until you reach muscle failure (muscles are burning and shaking and you physically can't do more).
2) Rest 1-2 minutes or until you feel ready to do it again.
3) Repeat steps 1 and 2 for a total of 3 sets.
You can do this workout daily, but at least do it 3-4 days a week to see results (more) quickly.
FOR THOSE ASKING ABOUT SAGGING BACKS AND PAIN IN YOUR TORSO: this is a sign from your body that developing core strength should be a priority for you in your life right now. The first thing you need to do is learn to engage your abdominal muscles. You can find them by laughing or coughing and observing the sensation in your core. Some people think of an ice cube on your belly button and pulling away from that. Others imagine bracing themselves against a punch in the stomach. Then, work on engaging those muscles all day long. When sitting, standing, walking, and ESPECIALLY during any type of exercise whatsoever. Strengthening your core will reduce back pain, increase confidence, improve posture, and support all physical activities including push ups. You will also improve coordination and balance and feel more grounded and centered.
Enroll in a class that focuses on core strength: Pilates, yoga, martial arts, dance, gymnastics/circus stuff (so in right now), swimming, etc. And/or search the internet for "beginner core strength" exercises and do those at home. If you can afford it, invest in a few personal training sessions. Or, if you have insurance, get a referral from your physician (cite pain) for physical therapy (PT is miraculous, you will love it!).

Thanks for the tutorial. It took me 73 days to build up enough strength, but I can do push-ups now. It feels good to do something that I couldn't do when I was younger.

Hi Haley! You can definitely do this, I promise. One little secret with physical activity is that your body follows your mind. It really matters what you say to yourself! If you tell yourself "i am just a fat lug." or "I can't do this.", it makes things physically harder. So try telling yourself, "I can do this. I'm proud of myself for trying hard. My hard work will pay off! I'm a fighter and I can fight through this to succeed!" It will take regular practice for a while, but you CAN do it. :)

You're most welcome, I'm so glad! It happens fast too, you will notice the difference every day. I was amazed when I could finally do a pushup for the first time since I was a teenager, then I moved on to three and five all in the same week, almost couldn't believe it. By the end of the month, I could do three sets of 20. No weightlifting or anything, just did the best I could every morning and the body takes care of the rest. It's an incredible feeling to watch yourself become stronger.

You talked a lot about strengthening the core (or something) but I am really having trouble with my arms. Whenever I extend them to do a push up, they get all noodly and don't hold me up. Any advice to help me with that??
@AmberHainsworth
@AmberHainsworth 10 лет назад
To strengthen your arms, what you can do is hold the position till you shake and if you can't do that, no worries! It just takes time! What I would do that also helped was walk stand up and put my hands up horizontal and hold the weights. When you can't hold them up any more don't stop, just slowly lower your arms, then when you gain some strength back put them back in a horizontal position. Or another thing you can do is jog, walk, or run with weights. They have some arm weights that are worn around your arms or you could do the regular carry the dumbells, but make sure you swing your arms properly. Holding the plank position like she talks about in the video I'd say is the easiest way. Just hold it till you feel like you're about to fall. I promise if you push yourself past your breaking points, you'll reach a lot more potential, and grow in strength a heck of a lot faster. I don't start counting ever till it starts hurting 😉 good way to improve and test my abilities!

@annabeth266
@annabeth266 9 лет назад
Raymond Fowler Exactly!! My arms are like limp noodles. Or at least when trying to do a push up. I can pull myself into a tree easily or push myself up when my 150 pound sister sits on me and I'm dying due to lack of oxygen (and might I add I'm only about 98-101 lbs. So for my body type that's kinda heavy.) But nope push ups are impossible. I think it may be the fact that our minds say okay it is necessary for you to get this weight off your body so you can breath so even if you don't have the ACTUAL strength to do it your doing it anyways. Cause then survival instincts kick in. But when told do as many push ups you can in this amount of time your brain just doesn't have that same instinct to push your body to its limits because the situation isn't life threatening. And with the climbing of the trees you can use momentum to aid you so eh. Really these type of tests are kinda stuipd. Add to the fact that in some PE classes they are part of your grade. Which sucks for us people who can't do this type of stuff.

Start holding the plank for however long you can (even if it is 3 seconds), then rest/repeat as many times as you can for 60 sec (even if you spend more time resting than planking). Repeat daily with the goal of planking more than resting, and eventually planking for 30-60 seconds. If that's too hard, put your hands on a raised surface like a chair back and hold your body in an angled push up position. When you can do 60 seconds, pick a lower and lower surface until you can do it on the floor.

Thank you! I'm one of the 'can't even do one' types, even on my knees and that has always discouraged me. Your tips have shown me that its OKAY and that there's a way!

This was SOOOOOO helpful!!! When I was younger, I was taught the wrong way to do a push up and (with my lack of upper body strength) I really struggle to get it right. Gonna start of with my planks right away. THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you for explaining the progression in a clear and meaningful way. Most of the time I find myself totally lost in my attempts to improve my plank/pushup, and now I realize it's because of the consistency and effort involved. Makes total sense! Thank you.

Yes. Keep at it and you will find you get less shaky over time. The only reason to stop is if you feel joint pain. Muscle burn, shakiness or fatigue are all normal feelings during rigorous exercise and in fact they probably mean you are making progress. Good luck!

I love how you get straight to the point and not blab on about how much water u should take or how much you should and shouldn't eat , but any ways thanks :) I hope it works for me ...I have not been able to do a full push up for 7years cause I broke my left collar bone and left wrist all in one year so it prevented me from doing one , I will comment when i can finally do a full push up cheers
