How To Do The Perfect Squat, And Why You Should Do It Every Day

Business Insider spoke with Roger Frampton, movement coach and author of "The Flexible Body", about the importance of the squat. Frampton said most Westerners don't squat naturally and shares his tips how to "regain" this position.
He adds that practicing just 10 minutes a day can produce results. "What I’m advising is that you get this position back - not for an exercise necessarily, not because of fitness or to be fitter, but just because you’re designed to do it. This here is just the human resting position."

I’ve had 13 years of brutal chronic pain. Over the last five years I’ve been slowly regaining my life. I’m 57 now. I’ve only recently been able to do light exercises without triggering chronic pain. After three days of doing these squats I feel it will be a life changing trajectory. It’s amazing g how good it feels. It’s activating aspects of the spine and pelvis long dormant. And I also feel it is having a positive affect on the meninges.

Great video Rogerl! I'd add an extra hack (taken from yoga) to your tip at 1:12. I use it with my clients and we see progress INSANELY quickly: After you sit on a yoga block or a pile of books, bring the elbows to the inner knees, and press them against each other - use this not only to open your hips, but also as leverage to grow your spine taller. Breathe deeply and gradually sink deeper into the squat. (It's also quite meditative and grounding.) Hope it's useful 👍/ Kat

Hi Roger . Thank you for this vid and interesting tips. It's v encouraging. I am 74 , never been a sport-loving person , but do rezlise the huge importance of physical fitness and strength and flexibilty. I have always believed in healthy diet , and, I think , bc of that, I am pretty at ease- no pain anywhere apart from the occasional tweak- can never remember where Also noticed an on and off pain in my hips at about 37 yrs old , and xrays shiwed artvritis , tho not sever.e I am now on the quest of staying as strong , fit and flexible as poss and recently discovered the imortance and benefits of the Asian/primal squats . So I have become a bit obssessed haha . Have been using under my heels some balancing pods which are idéal for me . I am only at a minute per squat and gradually enlongating the time . I find it hurts only in my knees , so hope that'll improve their strength and suppleness, that the pain will subside . That is one thing I forgot to mention - my knees hurt if kneelling and sitting on my ankles in certain yoga positions . Apologies for the length . Thanks again , Roger . Will be watching other vidéos of yours.

when i was in hospital with popliteal anurism, ( thats the artery behind the knee; ballooned up) the vascular surgeon said that he had no idea why people did sqauts & said that when you do a sqaut, you have no idea how much damage you do to the artery behind the knee, he said imagine a hosepipe & you compleatly bend it in the middle, that bend will stop the water in the hosepipe, then he said.. Thats what your acculy doing when you do sqauts. Your cutting the blood supply off from the knees down, he managed to save my leg by using an artificial artery or man made artery.. Cos my own was beyond repair, i very nearly lost my leg, but i have nerve damage problems & fluid build up problems, because of my leg having to be opened up right the way down to access the artery, so now i never kneel down or sit with legs crossed & i definatly wont do any sqauts.

You almost got it down....2 tricks...1st. Buy shoes called Inov8......2nd. Line you feet with your shoulders with your face toward the wall (with your big toe touching the wall) then drop that booty down slowly, it'll train your body to support on your heels. Proper squat is when your knees don't go past your feet. Proper squat = legs creating 90 angle or if you bout that life bucket squats.

Indians have been doing this since ages. The thing is that the west is waking up to what we already have in our roots.

Why do you say it’s all about ankles? That’s one part that can be key for people, however, there is a lot more to it. For example, your hip mobility, body proportions, core and hip strength, personal genetics and so on. On the one hand, I am not saying these things make it impossible to squat or anything like that, on the other hand, it can make it harder for someone to squat and that it’s also not as straight forward as adjusting your ankles. Lastly, squats can in some sense do wonders for people, however, I believe it is more about working on what contributes to a resting squat in your particular body.
