You are a virtuoso on the volume swells Dave, truly. Like many others here, it seems, I have conditions that make playing somewhat difficult at times, I had to re-learn how to play a few years ago due to Parkinsonisms, fortunately they don't affect my voice! (At least people tell me it's fortunate LOL) So I am in awe of the talent and feel you get with those beautifully measured swells. The capacity to add to the emotional landscape with volume swells is one of the most underrated skills in guitar playing, IMO. I almost wish (except I used my three wishes up as a child, like most people - how foolish of us!!) that I could still do them, some of my recent compositions would have benefitted from that kind of magic. Also, do you use any particular method for maintaining your pots? I find mine need almost constant attention, and nothing I've used to keep them clean and fluid seems to last very long.

I really like your approach to volume swells Dave :) I used to play them with a volume pedal, though after dismantling my pedalboard to move from one country to the other I naturally started to do the swells with the volume knob. I've been using it more and more on my own video jams...I find it much more expressive than the volume pedal.

Great video Dave very informative and therefore very useful. Especially for the home player! I'm sure you're familiar with one of my heroes Roy Buchanan, he was one of the first to really incorporate volume swells into blues playing. He also rolled the tone knob off and on to get a wah effect and was famously free from effects pedals. His setup was generally just a strat or tele into a fender vibrolux with the amp cranked to the max vol and tone (and usually the amp facing away from the audience) He didn't make any RU-vid videos tho so thx again for yours 🤘👍😊

But I feel ya man, I'm an over the road truck driver over here in the United States so I understand mental health issues more than most, hoping to get the motivation to finally finish learning how to play the electric guitar by watching these videos and of course taking the time lol. I use volume pedal. My hand is partially paralyzed so it makes it easier on the hand. Hehehehe.
@russellzauner
@russellzauner 4 года назад
Also why I bought a processor with an expression pedal on it. You can set it to default to volume when you aren't using it for anything else on that patch. Some guitars are also easier to reach it on and this way I only have to learn to do it one way for all of them as I learn how to use all of them in their own ways. The only reason I really started getting a few guitars is that my interests were getting so broad that I was already way beyond the limits of what I had in some cases and just tired of doing a zillion tunings all the time on one instrument when I can get something fairly reasonably that really fits the tunings and types of playing I end up doing, which at this point could be literally anything I can think of, at least.

I’m sure you probably go over it later on, but if not, if you have cheap volume pots, it helps to get better more expensive ones as well. Many pots are either full open, and then lose major signal by the time you get to like 70%. But you can get ones that are much more responsive, and work way smoother. That really helps with volume swells.

Dave, Thank you for sharing this-very generous on your part! That’s an awesome technique-transcendent. I just purchased a Strat and will give it a go. I know what you mean about the effects forcing you to slow down. I feel that when I use the Electro-Harmonix B9 organ pedal set on “continental” or “cathedral.” If I play too fast it sounds like mush. It feels so strange to be playing a guitar but hearing an organ or almost a harpsichord. I’ve learned that vibrato works but string bending does not-an organ or harpsichord can’t do that.

Nobody has said yet on this video, but the Lemon Drop is pretty awesome. I admit that when I hear some guitars and recognize which one is coming up I get a little excited. :-) Everyone seems to have great taste and so many different guitars (one bass channel is doing a series on viewer basses, it's actually pretty great) but there are always standouts and that boy you're holding there reminds me of so much of Greenie (the 59' (?) LP now in possession of Kirk Hammett, watch that video if you want to hear its tone - it's FANTASTIC) but it really visually lights up the frame as well as nail that tone we love in the classic LPs.

I put a very old set of knobs from a Marantz stereo amp that have a notch and are taller than standard strat knobs on my strat...super easy to do swells with and the extra height of the knob lets you have easier access to the strings you pluck....

Good video dave! Hey, I have seen many videos about wha pedals, and your video of the vox v847 vs the ibanez wh10 was the best. After my large search of my first wha pedal, I decided to buy the vox v847 (basically bc that pedal can emulate frusciante's sound and its more versatile). However, all the music stores in my country shows in their catalogues the vox v847a. ¿Do you have any reference about the vox v847a? ¿How this pedal works with a ds2? ¿Can emulate the sounds of jimi hendrix, john frusciante or another musicians (like jimmy page for example)? Thanks in advance. Pd: sorry if I have grammatical mistakes, spanish is my primary languaje hahaha

Which type of pots do you prefer for doing volume swells? the linear ones which have a sudden volume increaase around 3 and 8 and the inbetween positions don't change that much or the logarithmic ones in which 1 to 10 positions affect the volume in a proportionate way?
@RobCmusic

I'm a bit lazy - I have a Mooer Slow Engine (Boss Slow Gear clone) in my FX loop after all my distortion, although the effect is slightly different. In fact I use it on the fastest setting, so it just cuts off the attack mostly. It's close enough to fake a reverse-sounding solo live. I still volume swell with the volume pot occasionally.

Not so fun fact: As a lefty guitar player with stock fender strats, the pots are right handed wired backwards so 10 is off and 1 is full on. This makes volume swells quite difficult. Also, it effects the clean up of the guitar different when rolling the volume knob down, but that doesn't bother me much.
