Seth, your videos are really helping me get some moves I’ve been working on for years. I finally have a solid back deck roll thanks to you. I’ve been working on double pump for years w no joy. I seem to always pivot onto my head or my bow gets rejected and I get stern down. I recently got a Mixmaster so I’m hoping that helps. Eager to try the tips you suggest. Thanks!

Just find that perfect amount of edge and dont stand up. post a video and I can look at it for you.

Thanks for this! I've been trying to get this and keep landing on my face! I only have 800 more attempts to go before I get it solid haha :)

Hi Seth! I'm dropping this comment right after I got my first ever double pump-to-bow stall in today! THANK YOU, I have watched this video maybe more than 50 times in the past week, and taking notes right after I get home from the river. After maybe hundreds of face plants, I'm happy to finally get it. My next goal is to have a longer stall. :)

I think the average is 100000000 face plants so if you are under 1000 you are ahead !! Great work!

Seth, this video is excellent! I watched several times and took it to the lake this afternoon. Did three near perfect double pumps within my first five goes. Still working on my edge angle and halting the rotation for a bow stall, but got the feel now. Thanks so much for posting and your awesome instruction!!

@@SethAshworth still practicing and having much more success. Couldn't second the comments in your video on persistent perseverance more! That said, I have a breakthrough earlier this week when I started looking at my rear paddle when going into the double-pump. All of a sudden they are way more consistent, and just connected my first second-cartwheel rotation as a result! I feel a bit stupid because in all the other sports I am familiar with, where your eyes go, the body will follow. Finally applied this to the cartwheel and it's really helping! You mention this around 7:56, but it was a big deal and game-changer for me.

You're working the left side. Is that the go to for most right handed paddlers? I really want to get this move! Do you think it's harder for female paddlers?
@SethAshworth
@SethAshworth 4 года назад
Try both sides and find what you prefer, I just happen to prefer that way. In terms of what works best for females I did have an interesting discussion with top women's pro kayaker Natalie Anderson one time about this where she mentioned that women carry more weight in the hips and less in the shoulders than men so the point of balance is different for women, therefore getting to the point of balance may also be different. That being said I haven't given it much more thought than that and have seen plenty of women use this same method to get their kayak vertical so I guess I don't really know. Sorry that doesn't help too much, thanks for watching. My final thought would be just start giving it a go, expect to fail 500-800 times before you succeed and fingers crossed you will find what works for you and what doesn't sooner than that. try to review yourself on video if you can!

@@SethAshworth THANKS for the reply! I'm enjoying your videos. You have a great way of breaking down things. It actually helps me when you say expect 500-800 times. I was instead kind of expecting it to take a day to perfect, lol. ;)

I can do all sorts of bow tricks, but I have always had to use external support float to get up on the bow. I wish I could get a double pump, but I will try again

It takes some goes to fall over and fall over but it’s worth it in the end

Something to note...I'm sure alot of people feel the same way, but I found it absolutely confusing and hard to disconnect my legs from my upper body to slam my legs down. Something that helped with this, was finding two handrails that border a walkway, and using your hands and arms, lift yourself between them, have your legs out straight in front of you, and get the feel of moving your legs side to side with your upper body still. Love your videos Seth 🤙

@@SethAshworth I'm just working on consistency. I'm in the pool 2-3 times a week and on low water play parks 1-2 times a week. Some days are better than others, but I'm having more better days as time goes along. I'm getting my 2-point cartwheel, and had a 3-pointer once. Split wheels are easy. Getting my stern stall is good, but slowly working on my bow stall...all from the double pump. I've had two problems consistently plaguing me: falling forward, and a less than smooth transition to my stern. I have a couple of really good freestyle mentors back here in Colorado. The other night, a former Irish freestyle Pro and friend said I was getting too far on edge when I fall over forward. I watched my GoPro vids (I vid myself) and came back to your vid. The problem was nailed. Anyways, like everything else in whitewater kayaking, I am getting better about turning my head when and where I want to go when starting my next move...makes my move smoother and easier. This is all easier on moving water for some reason. Anyways, my 14 yo son is crazy good, and he's been working with me on my loop. I flop on my flatwater loop, but at the end of last season before the water dropped out, I was landing it on my stern, but almost there. Again, my key was looking up stream rather than at my bow as well as reaching for the sky. I have a natural tendency to get the accidental Space Godzilla when I know I'm failing my loop...These are my goals for freestyle in 2022. Just keep putting out your videos, you communicate very clearly and don't over complicate things.

Kudos for a really good double pump tutorial. Wish I would have had this when I learned it. Probably would have saved me some pool time. One of the best ones out there. I am now struggling/working on "the party trick" and doing a "flatwater backloop". Would it be interesting for you to do a tutorial on that?

The amount of times I've had to roll because I've tried to double pump 😂, my Jackson rockstar (2007 model I think) is too big for a paddler my size so I have great difficulty doing freestyle tricks, but it surfs like a dream..... Thanks for breaking it down, it might help me understand the movements a bit clearer
@SethAshworth
@SethAshworth 5 лет назад
Hope it helps! A lot of the time good technique can make a boat too big work for you but I do think it is easiest to learn in a boat that is the correct size for you, at least to get started with.

Seth I’m having real problems linking ends. I’m getting over the nose and onto the tail but then usually just stall or fall flat trying to get round to initiate that next brace stroke. Sometimes works but no consistency, any chance of some top tips or a tutorial on this aspect of cartwheels?
@SethAshworth
@SethAshworth 5 лет назад
Angus Robins without seeing I’m just guessing but what you are describing is ‘body not Centered’ ie you are standing up or crunching down too much and that’s causing you to loose balance. Keep you body central and stay ahead of your boat to link most effectively
