Hey Faraz, this helped me BIG TIME. Also needed Mojave for an older audio interface and I couldn't have done it without the vid. Subscribing and wishing you all the best!
@@ExcelExciting same here and ended up buying a cheap refurbished Macbook Air but even that had too new version of Mac OS X installed to work with my hardware! So using your video to downgrade to Mojave or High Sierra! Apple needs to quit pushing their new OS that break hardware!
In case it helps anyone, while downgrading from Monterey to Catalina, I kept getting an error in my terminal when trying to erase / make my USB a bootable. I followed some advice online and formatted it instead as ExFAT instead of MacOS Extended and it worked! Something to consider trying in case you're running into the same issue.
Thank you, Thank you Faraz, I had updated to Monterey and come to know that many music programs for recording with protools were still not compatible with the new version of Mac. What a big help with your video.
thanks for sharing your feedback.. your comment would be helpful for other audiences who are watching this video. May I know which apps were you facing issue ?
This happened to me with ableton! I’m actually at the apple store right now because I am getting an error at the internet recovery stage :( I’m so close and have done everything according the video but they can’t figure it out!
@@justindouville5448 I’m also trying to downgrade from bigsur back to high sierra or Mojave because of ableton. I’m still running 9 so I have to go pre Catalina, but I’m sort of afraid to try thud since I’ve never done it before
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial! I had to downgrade to an older version of Mac OS X to use hardware synthesizers that do not work with later versions of the Mac OS X. I did have to create a bootable disk like you mentioned but the App Store download gave me issues download software so I used manual download site from Apple Support.
Thank you! I downgraded to High Sierra to use my 2011 27" iMac as a display for my Mac Studio. High Sierra or earlier was a requirement. The process saved me $1500 on a new display. Many thanks for your step-by-step video.
Hey, so I was stuck in the same boat that the erase button wouldn’t work… i would click the erase button and nothing would happen. Follow everything he says on the video up until the erase part (if the erase part doesn’t work for you obviously).. I shut the MacBook down.. then powered it on.. press Command and R until it boots you to “Monterey Recovery”. Once in “Monterey Recovery” it’ll look similar to those erase instructions (recovery mode Faraz is showing) except you won’t be able to “show all devices”. Erase your internal disk.. give it a name and choose APFS and erase. It should work… once you’re done erasing exit this recovery mode. Turn off your Mac. Turn it back on and continue with Fazal’s instructions… (right when he said turn it on and hold the option key) … obviously there won’t be nothing to erase since you just did it in Monterey recovery. Continue with installing the MacOS you want. Hope this helps. Sorry if it’s extra wordy…and sorry if it doesn’t work for you like it worked for me. Good luck!
Thanks Faraz, It worked! People, Make sure your USB drive or hard disk is directly connect to your system. HUB won't take it. I went back to Mojave becasue I'm a music producer and none of my softwares worked. Thank you :)
Faraz, you are my saviour! Thank you so much for this superbly clear and concise tutorial. I recently updated the OS on my 2015 MacBook Pro to Monterey but realized that Traktor pro 2 is not compatible with it so I had to downgrade to Mojave. This video has saved me a lot of trouble and I am truly grateful. Liked and subscribed!
Great video...we upgraded one Mac 2 days ago...from High Seirra..to Catalina...and then straight to Montarey... Had many issues... particularly with Logic pro plugins like waves . ...final cut 3rd party apps ..plus system was slower due to this being a 27 inch later 2015 5k retina model..... Phewww.... tomorrow...we will downgrade back to High Seirra...and use your method...as well as restore from the Back up we first made before upgrading from High Sierra to Catalina....
Thank you for this VERY helpful video! My 2018 MacBook Pro running Mojave died and I bought a used one to replace it. It had Monterey loaded on it and the Time Machine restore wouldn't work with that OS on it. I didn't figure that out completely for a long time. So I realized I needed to load Mojave on the new used computer and I followed your fine instructions. After that, I restored (Command R) (NOT transfer data but restored) from my Time Machine backup. This last step is not in this video (in case you have a similar problem). 🙂
My Touch Bar stopped working when I updated to Monterey. Apple store wanted to charge me $596 to fix a “hardware issue” when clearly it was software related. Glad I took the time to learn how to do this!
You save my life. I upgraded to Ventura from Mojave because of the incompatibility with adobe. But after that my macpro 2019 was unbearably slow. Following the tutorial, I had one error that said my laptop security setting doesn't allow to use an external startup disk, just follow the instruction to change the setting and problem solved. Thanks a lot!!!
Thank you Farez, your instructions were perfect. I had numerous issues with Monterey and Logic Pro. Now everything is running well again with Big Sur 👍👍
Hi Ross, was the playhead missing out n Logic Pro? I went from High Sierra to Catalina on my iMac in 2020 and lost the playhead on Logic. I was thinking of going back to High Sierra but if Big Sur works that maybe an option too. I update my MacBook Pro initially to Catalina and that worked fine with Logic Pro so that was the reason I decided to upgrade my desktop lol. Not used the desktop since
@@ExcelExciting this is actually some plug-ins i use to record songs and demos in ableton live such as addictive drums, bias amp etc. lots of them just crush over and over again. same thing in logic x pro, that’s why i prefer older version :) i also had some troubles with crossover, wine (oh man, i can’t live a life without it!) and topazlabs gigapixel to edit photos in high resolution. everything was just crushing every time as i mentioned before. now i’m the happiest person alive. thanks a lot again!!
Excellent video, made my life so much easier than reading a million forums. I downgraded because an audio program I purchased in the past wasn't working on Monterrey.
Man congratulations for the video. You saved my life with that tutorial. I was trying to do a fresh installation in my iMac late 2011. I made a mess and lost everything in the disk. I downloaded high sierra and installed with your tutorial. Congratulations again buddy!!! I have just subscribed to your channel to show some gratitude!!!!
Thank you so much Faraz! I feel like a computer scientist 😂 I was able to successfully downgrade from macOS Monterey to Big Sur! and keep my data! yeeee! now I just gotta figure out how to get my old IMovie and Microsoft Office files back cause they're still incompatible 😭
Thank you very much for this Guide, Faraz, it worked perfectly for me. The reason why I downgraded my OS was because of the 32 bit apps incapability for Monterrey.
Oh my goodness, I’ve been trying for weeks to get mine to downgrade to Big Sur! Reading different articles and nothing seemed to work except for this video. Thank you very much and it was such an easy process!! 😊🙏🏽
life saver huge thanks wanted to downgrade back to big sur and get my sound back on my macbook pro hated using blue tooth all the time with monterey which messed up my audio but everything now back to normal
been looking for a comment like this. So my Pro 2016 has a fan issue, but apparently when I formatted it, it went back to Mojave and the fan noise disappeared and battery health was excellent. I then stupidly upgraded it to Monterey, and the constant fan noise came back. but I think I am going to downgrade again to the OS the laptop came with. Do you know why it behaves like this though????
Thank Faraz! Had a Mac mini Logic board replaced and they sent it back with Monterey installed but we use Mojave on all computers in our studio setup This is exactly the video I needed for the downgrade!
Thank you Faraz, wish I found you earlier. I had corrupted my system by making a bad downgrade previously. It was acting up and now I have to redo this step. Gotten a lot of unnecessary education about T2 chip and missing admin privileges! The main reason for the downgrade are software not working or performing properly on the 64bit architecture of Monterey. Too many bugs
Thank you for this tutorial. I am going to downgrade to Mojave as well, because Monterey turned out to be a complete and utter nightmare for my late 2015 iMac. Gigantic memory leaks all the time, unable to work on the machine as it kept freezing (despite 32 GB of RAM). In all of the years using iMacs, I have never seen a worse OS than MOnterey. WTF were they thinking when they put this garbage out?
Thank you so much for this video! I had to downgrade Mac to older version to use the software with some hardware that will not run on newer Mac OS versions.
the only problem i was facing while downgrading is that when i was trying to download the os from app store it was saying that my system is up to date, as i was running monterey..then i came across the solution is that i need to open my mac in safe mode to download the os and it worked for me, rest is asshown in this video thank you so much....guys dont upgrade...its a trap
thank you dearly for this video! it helped me a ton! monterey gave me so many issues on my imac. it became super slow and all my graphic software were not supported. a real pain that new ios. happy to be back on mojave! cheers
you deffo got a subscribe like from me!! I needed to downgrade because I put Monterey on and videos were not working right on my 2013 IMAC. back to SOLID performance from CATELINA thanks again MAN! gj
Great Tutorial Faraz, worked well! You are very clear with all the steps, really appriciate that! I downgraded to Catalina because of older (otherwise incompatible) software and that I like Catalina's interface and speed.
Nice mate. I’ve just bought an old refurbished MacBook Air running Monterey to replace my 2008 (yes… two thousand and EIGHT) iMac running El Capitan. After migrating my apps and user data it’s a catastrophe. Have already spent hours trying to get stuff running. Safe mode usually ok but as soon as I go normal… So I guess it’s just way too big of a leap. Prolly woulda eventually figured out (via Apple) how to downgrade but you’ve summed it up nicely 👍 Never had to downgrade an OS in 25 years of Apple/Win use (solving the issues was always the cleanest an quickest way forward ) but I guess there’s a first for everything 😂
Thank you Faraz for making this video. It has relieved the stress of rolling back to Mojave. MacOS Monterey Version 12.0.1 on my Mac mini (Late 2014) Processor 1.4 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 was slower than cold molasses. Now I'm happy running it with Mojave. It suits my needs and is fast. I followed your clear instructions which made the preparations and installation go super smooth.
I have the same problem! I have Mac mini late 2014 and when I downloaded Monterey, everything was so slow. I’m glad it worked for you bcos I am in the process of completing mine.
Can I get my current files off the time machine backup made in Monterey without going back to Monterey after wiping drive & installing Mojave??? I am worried...
I downloaded Monterey os because I want to make music with my korg kross 2, which is an electronic keyboard/piano. And the software that comes with this keyboard is only compatible with older Mac os’s. Thank you for the help!
Thank you so much Faraz! I use digital audio program called Pro Tools and it still is not compatible with the newer OSes that Mac has come out with. Now I can get back to my freelance work!
Hmmm… in Terminal, erasing disk 100%, copying to disk 100% but then states… ‘IA app name cookie write failed… The copy of the installer app failed’. Any ideas anyone as I’ve been going around and around for sometime trying to sort this. I’m trying to downgrade from Big Sur to Mojave so the software I have from previous Mac will work etc.
Believe it or not I have to upgrade a computer that was running this operating system before. However i will not allow me to connect to Apple Store for some reason so I'm going to use your system to upgrade the computer. Thank you so much for your clear information extremely well presented thank you and explained.
Hey Farez, I had to downgrade because my docking station usb-c stopped working with Monterey, so I downgraded back to BigSur. Thanks again for the information it was very helpful!

Faraz I have a 2019 Mac Pro and I was wondering if I upgrade the boot drive to Monterey (or other newer MacOS) will it always let you downgrade? I have heard that once the firmware is upgraded to a certain point you may not be able to downgrade. Do you know if this is true? Thanks, great video !
Thank you so much! Everything went smoothly, however when I try to restore my files with Time Machine, it doesn't show my latest back up. Could you please help? My files are definitely backed up into an external hard drive. Is it possibly because the backup was done in Ventura, therefore cannot restore in Mojave?
I own a bar and I use my 2016 MacBook Pro to DJ. I'm running Pioneer's Serato DJ Pro on a DDJ-1000SRT and it's worked perfectly when I was running Mojave. I had someone make me some visual graphics with my logo and I wanted to find a good way to store those videos on my Apple TV 4K connected to my bar TVs. Everything I read online said to put them in my video library on my Mac using the Apple TV app but I couldn't find there anywhere on Mojave. So I upgraded to Monterey and then still couldn't transfer the videos or get them to loop forever on nights when we DJ. And then the MacBook started taking forever to read my external hard drive where all of my music for Serato is stored. And then when I would DJ the music would freeze and stop while the dance floor was packed. People look at me like I just murdered someone. I need to roll back my OS to Mojave because I'm not buying a new laptop.
I'm trying to downgrade from Catalina to High Sierra. After turning on the computer (6:00min) by holding the "option"key I get a black screen, so my key doesn't work as startup. I've to Cmd +R keys but I get into the MacOS Recovery utility window with Catalina back again as option to reInstall. Is there is another way to access the High Sierra external drive installer/ volume without the option key as startup?. I appreciate your response. thanks!
